LOS ANGELES TIMES PREMIERES NEW VIDEO FOR ANGELENO, BY SAM OUTLAW.
“Angeleno” is both the title track of Sam Outlaw’s debut album and the marrow of his sound and sensibility, coined “SoCal Country” by Outlaw himself. The album track, pacific in origin and temperament, shows Outlaw’s fusion of classic, graceful country songwriting matched with the famous mariachi touches of Jesús “Chuy” Guzmán, who notably toured with and recorded on Linda Ronstadt’s Grammy-winning Spanish album Canciones de Mi Padre (Songs of My Father).”
Now, a new video for “Angeleno” pairs Outlaw up with another ‘cowboy in LA’ outsider – a professional bareback rodeo rider named Cesar Kid Bañuelos. Bañuelos attended a show at The Troubadour last spring and felt a strong camaraderie with Outlaw’s story, which mirrored his own experiences and challenges as a west coast rider on the rodeo circuit. Bañuelos contacted Outlaw, and the concept for the video was born.
Alongside footage shot at a recent rodeo in Denver, CO, the video for “Angeleno” features Hollywood’s Roosevelt hotel, a sprawling, twinkling city seen from the Hollywood hills and a local mariachi band, “Mariachi
Teocuitatlan.” There’s longing and dreaming contrasted with hard knocks and grit – two poles that define LA in popular imagination. The video was directed and edited by Max Cutrone.
Sam Outlaw is currently on the Country & Western Nights Tour with Six Shooter Records labelmate Whitney Rose. Outlaw is also confirmed to play California’s Stagecoach Festival in April, where he will make a rare appearance with a 10-piece band, featuring Mariachis.
