We are soooo excited about Victoria Day, that we thought it would be appropriate to chuck a bunch of our artists over to her Royal Ghostness’ home turf. The Good Lovelies are tearing it up right now in the UK (don’t worry, there is more Canadian greatness to come too)! Whitehorse embarked on their own UK (and Netherlands) tour starting today! And if that wasn’t enough, we’re sending the lovely Amelia Curran over to wow the Brits in June. Now that’s what I call stuffing the chips in the haddock!
I’ve already gone through two propane tanks this BBQ season, which I’m pretty sure means that I am doing summer right so far (or maybe that I am doing BBQing wrong, but whatevs). I get one summer point each for the used propane tanks, and I just got another summer point for cutting the sleeves off my t-shirt… not a bad start for the early summer rankings, should be a good season.
With so many great festivals to attend, it’s no surprise that summer is our favourite season (non-freezing coldness helps too). Attending festivals = summer points galore! We’re so pleased that our western Canadian friends will have multiple opportunities to check the Beauties, known in our hometown as Toronto’s best roots music band. They’ll be rocking the soles of folks at the Winnipeg Folk Fest, Dauphin Countryfest, South Country Fair, Calgary Folk Fest, and our own Interstellar Rodeo. Whitehorse is going to rock your socks off, too, at Ness Creek, Calgary Folk Festival, Interstellar Rodeo, and others not announced yet. And Deep Dark Woods are taking their great sounds all over the place…in addition to a number of great Canadian festivals such as Dawson City Music Festival (one of my fave festivals everrr) and Hillside, they are also playing Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, Bristol Rhythm and Blues in America; and Tonder, End of the Road and Great Wide Open (which is kind of the opposite of Deep Dark Woods, innit?) festivals in Europe. Check tour dates for these and other appearances by all of Six Shooter artists, like Jenn Grant, Bidiniband, and more.
Hit an indie record store near you to pick up vinyl copies of all of our latest releases: the excellent new album, Stars and Satellites by Trampled by Turtles, Deep Dark Woods’ fantastic Six Shooter debut, The Place I Left Behind, and the self-titled debut recording by Whitehorse. Also stay tuned for the vinyl release of Del Barber’s Headwaters…pre-orders available soon through our webstore. I love vinyl so much! The giant glorious artwork, the smell of fresh wax when you first pull your record from the sleeve, the pop of the needle when you drop it on that first groove, the opportunity to roll your eyes and shake your fist in the air when some dweeb says “they still make those things?”, being a record nerd is tha coolest!
I’ve only recently realized that playing the popular downtown pedestrian / public transit game of “Bluetooth or crazy” actually kind of sucks. Either way I am decidedly non-stoked on the outcome. It’s kind of like playing “dog fart or human fart” (a game I never want to play), you are in for a stinky no matter what.
A much better game is “Whitehorse or Jenn Grant”, since a) it’s easy, they sound different, and b) either way you win!! Both artists are putting finishing touches on their respective near-complete new albums, and will both be released this summer. Have I mentioned how much I love summer? Amelia Curran is also in the middle of a new record, which we hope will be released in the fall (um, have I mentioned how much I love fall? Not as much as summer, but Amelia’s album will still rule). And the Good Lovelies just recorded a live album at Revolution Recording — keep your ears tuned.
Smoky Mountain spirit Gillian Welch and Texas punk roots rocker Alejandro Escovedo and the Sensitive Boys are confirmed additions to Friday, July 27, the opening night of the first ever Interstellar Rodeo. Welch and Escovedo replace Sinéad O’Connor, who recently cancelled all upcoming tour dates due to illness. Together, Welch and Escovedo bring a distinctly southern shade to Friday’s show, and the heart of modern Americana music will beat strong on the Interstellar stage.
SINGLE TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE AS OF MONDAY, MAY 28, 2012. Tickets will be available at www.sixshooterrecords.com, Ticket Master and Blackbyrd.
PLEASE NOTE: The sale of single tickets will be delayed until we find a replacement for Sinéad O’Connor (see news page). Until then, the early bird ticket price will be extended.
We were very saddened to learn that Sinéad O’Connor has cancelled all of her dates in 2012 due to her struggle with bipolar disorder (more info here: http://shar.es/rByfE). Our hearts go out to Sinéad, and we would like to send her love and courage in her on-going battle with mental illness.
We are working quickly to find a replacement for our Friday night headliner. We are confident that we will be able to find another artist who will generate a similar level of excitement and anticipation. We will postpone our single ticket on-sale date until we have a replacement secured. Meanwhile, our Early Bird pricing will stay in effect until that time.
Please stay tuned. You can follow us on Twitter @SixShooterR, or at www.facebook.com/interstellarrodeo, or by subscribing to the Six Shooter newsletter. Many thanks for your patience and understanding.
We are so pleased to welcome officially the new album from Trampled By Turtles to the Six Shooter world! Yaaaa! It’s a chiefin’ beauty of a disc and we are proud that it bears our logo in the mystical frozen land of Canada. Fans of Palomino will find a lot to love on this record. The first single, “Alone,” is already winning hearts all over the continent.
This description from the folks at HearYa sums it up well: “The song starts as if it was casually put together on the porch. There isn’t that frenetic TxT energy that has helped define them over the years, but then the finish that comes in at 2:51 is majestic. It picks you up on the crest of a wave and takes you for a ride that leaves you breathless. I have listened to this track countless times and I don’t know how else to describe it other than magical or perfection or genius.” We hear ya, HearYa!
A video for “Alone” will be debuting soon in Canada – keep your eyes and ears peeled, as it will surely be a magical example of perfection and/or genius (you choose). We will be making our announcement about it shortly. Oh wait, we kinda just did… well, we will give you a holler when it actually drops so you can tune in to Video Hits, or Hulk Hogan’s Rock & Wrestling, or the internet, or whatever the music video thingy is called these days.
Congrats to the band on making such an amazing record, if the future was now, and we already all had three hands, we would give them a high fifteen. Stars and Satellites is available now on www.sixshooterrecords.com. Order through our webstore and receive a complimentary TxT button (and we don’t mean the keypad on your smartphone…LoL)!
It is no secret that we at Six Shooter Records are suckers for great songwriters. Oh wait, that was supposed to be a secret, damn! The Katniss is out of the bag! Well, since we’ve spilled the beans on the great-songwriter-suckerage, we might as well divulge that we also love all things Winnipeg. The newest addition to the Six Shooter roster happens to be both of these things (great songwriter and Winnipegatobian), so it should come as no surprise that the talented Del Barber now calls our label home.
We’re very proud to be releasing Del’s third album, Headwaters, a set of prairie parables that lead through finely crafted confessionals and twang-kissed tales of desires lived, left and lost. Jeez, all those alliterations totally twisted my tongue! Watch for it on May 1. Del tours Canada from coast to coast with Old Man Luedecke in May — check da tour dates for details, dude.
Pre-orders are available now through Six Shooter store. Order yours before May 1 and receive a free Six Shooter temporary tattoo in your envelope (complete with our motto, “Life is too short to listen to shitty music.”). Order after May 1 and receive a REAL tattoo of Bart Simpson and the Tazmanian Devil smoking a bong with Justin Bieber (complete with their motto, “life is too short to not get this tattoo on your butt”).
Jenn brings spring to Moncton, NB! That’s right, she bought the city their very own Slinky! The always sunny (and slinky) Honeymoon Punch has 4 nominations at this year’s ECMAs; Album of the Year, Rock Recording of the Year, Song of the Year (“Getcha Good”), and Entertainer of the Year. Producer and graphic magic man Daniel Ledwell is also nominated for Audio Professional and Graphic/ Media Artist of the Year (they didn’t have an award for the “magic man” part, but we figure if he wins he can pull a bunny out of a hat or saw Jenn in half or something and maybe get on some additional ad hoc award steez).
Catch Jenn performing live on Q’s special ECMA broadcast on Friday morning, and also on an ECMA edition of Shift presented by the CBC on Friday afternoon. Moncton locals have the chance to catch one of two performances on Saturday April 14 at the Empress Theatre. See tour dates for complete information.
Oh, and for all you Monctonians (Monctonites? Monks?), also be sure to catch Henry Wagons, who is traveling all the way from Australia for the festival.
Was SXSW just three weeks ago? Seems like the distant past. But still vivid in our memories is the smoking hot show Whitehorse performed at the Continental Club as part of the No Depression showcase. This Austin blog summed it up perfectly:
They’ve been racking up similarly stellar reviews on their sold-out USA tour with the Wood Brothers, and are now ready to bring their captivating live show to the Canadian prairies. Many of the shows are close to sell-out – so get your tickets now! See tour dates below for more details.
