WOMBCORE: TANYA TAGAQ SHARES “CENTRE” FEATURING SHAD.
NEW ALBUM RETRIBUTION DUE 10/21.
“Morse code from a dimension we exist in but can’t sense.” – The FADER
The first new music from Inuk punk Tanya Tagaq’s forthcoming album Retribution is now available, and it’s a hip-hop song about metaphysics, molecular biology and menstruation.
“Centre” features rapper Shad, raucous ravens recorded in Nunavut, trombones and rare lyrical moments from Tagaq. The song – danceable and playful – might surprise those bracing for Retribution’s wrath and doom (although the album contains plenty of that too).
As told to The FADER, Tagaq says, “Our lyrics are about electrons, gravity, the fundamental forces, looking at how physical laws can be applied spiritually and emotionally, and how to centre yourself. As a woman, I know my centering happens where I make my babies, it’s not in my head, it’s in the cavities of my body where I hold blood. It’s where we create.” Read Tagaq’s full comments here.
