They Promised You Mercy

Blue Rose/Six Shooter CD/DL

Canadian folk queen gently kicks out the jams.

Newfoundlander Amelia Curran has got the seven-album itch. After six largely acoustic albums she’s pulled out an electric guitar and just about decided to rock. No matter what the setting, however, it’s the lyrics that you come to Curran for, and here she displays a new-found acceptance of her own frailty, but also an accompanying defiance, daring all to take on “the queen of the closing bar” at their peril. But for all the horns and strings and guitar solos, folk still underpins her music, and no better than with the delicate beauty of Time, Time. What sets Curran apart is an absence of whimsy, the harsh light of experience driving her songs rather than wispy, idealized fantasy, and that grit ensures this material remains timeless.
