Spring has sprung, the grass has rizz! I apologize in advance if this newsletter has a bunch of typos in it, for some reason there has been a big black spot in the middle of my computer screen since April 8th... and a big black spot everywhere else I look too for that matter, hmm. Btw, did anyone check out the eclipse the other day? It looked so cool if you stared directly at it! Totality awesome!
NYSSA Celebrates Shake Me Where I’m Foolish with Release Show at Lula Lounge, April 18
NYSSA will celebrate her glorious new witch rock album, Shake Me Where I’m Foolish, with a hometown show at Toronto’s Lula Lounge on April 18. Special guests include Quarterback Baby and Michael Peter Olsen. Get your tickets here. Many of us Six Shooterers will be in attendance, and will likely be so excited that we seem a bit foolish, but please don’t shake us even if NYSSA tells you to.
Shake Me Where I’m Foolish, released February 1, 2024, was Exclaim’s Staff Pick (“It’s pure classic rock, full of supernatural lyrics, clanging guitars and NYSSA cutting loose with her giddy vibrato. It’s a totally over-the-top rendition of retro-sounding music, finding fresh excitement in rock ‘n’ roll’s past.”) and enthusiastically reviewed with 4 stars in Le Devoir.
NYSSA will continue her international travels with upcoming showcases at Focus Wales and The Great Escape (UK). See tour dates below for all the details.

Elliott BROOD Bring Town and Country Together
Elliott BROOD officially enter their Town and Country era. Country, released last week, is the second part of a journey that began in November with the release of Town. Together, Town and Country tell the tales of a trio that has endured twenty years on the road (and they’ve never had a fight! Wowww). Do you guys remember the Nelly album Sweat Suit? It was a similar concept, but it was more about sweating (on album 1) and wearing suits (on album 2), and less about charging down new paths in the name of growth, love, and family. Still kinda the same though.
Country begins with the absolute ripper “Wind and Snow,” which shows that Elliott BROOD still have plenty of lyrical tricks up their sleeves. A roadhouse classic in the making (like Jake Gyllenhaal in song form), “Wind and Snow” comes complete with its masterful rhyme of Albuquerque with Wild Turkey, and covers eight states in three minutes.
“C’Mon Let’s Go” starts up like a car engine (although if your car engine sounds like that, you may want to get your Prius looked at by a mechanic), powered by a rumbling organ (again, not really how a car engine is supposed to sound) and a sense of melancholic mayhem (or mechanical mayhem in the car engine example). “C’Mon Let’s Go” calls us on a tour of local hamlets with mischief in mind. Those sneaky little rascals.
Windsor, ON may be their city of origin but the BROOD are clearly country lovers at heart. As in they love their own album called Country, which makes them country lovers. Which is allowed because they worked really hard on it, and if you don’t love your own album, then what’s the point, right? But also it would appear they like country music, even as Windsor, ON dudes. I would also like to mention that one time (this is a true story btw) I won $100 on an Elvis
Presley themed slot machine in Windsor, ON. I feel like this is perhaps, in some esoteric way, relevant to the new Elliott BROOD album. So there you go!
On Country, Elliott BROOD also pay homage to a few of their musical heroes with covers of “Out of Time” (The Rolling Stones) and Rodney Crowell’s “Bluebird Wine.” I am unsure if either of these artists have slot machines that honor them, or if I would win $100 if I played them, but those are pretty cool songs either way.

Boy Golden Announces New Album, For Eden + May Tour
Boy Golden hits the road in May with a tour across Ontario, the USA and his first shows on the East Coast with new music ready for release this summer, which I expect will lead to even more touring (such is the cycle of life).
On his new album, For Eden, Boy Golden searches for the best of all possible worlds, which sounds like a pretty ideal scenario to me. Utopic and wistful, this journey is a continuation of his “follow your art” proselytizing (big word alert!) that began with his Church of Better Daze debut. A counterpoint to 2023’s For Jimmy, For Eden is largely a work of solitude (utopic and wistful solitude, of course). Its story begins with an SM57 microphone and a cabin in the woods that is haunted by ghosts whose ghastly howls are unfortunately outside of the frequency range of an SM57. While writing this I am snacking on my very first Crookie (the viral recipe that combines a croissant and a cookie), and while I am not totally convinced that this is something that needed to happen, I think it is relevant to the new Boy Golden album as I am comfortable confirming that Le Crookie is For Eatin’.
Boy Golden introduces the new album with the opening track, “Here To Stay,” which is out now, and, well, it’s here to stay. Inspired by “The Bluebird”, a Bukowski poem, “Here To Stay” makes it safe for the smallest, most delicate parts of us to be free. Like my baby toe, which will be safe to be free as sandal season quickly approacheth. A card-carrying Friend of the Bluebirds in his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Boy Golden’s new album begins with a dual metaphysical and ornithological idea that boils down to something very simple: sing the songs that are inside you.

William Prince Wins a JUNO Award!
William Prince returns home from his sold out theatre tour across Canada with a JUNO Award for Stand in the Joy, which won Contemporary Roots Album of the Year. Congratulations, William! If I had a sold out tour and a JUNO award, I would most certainly be standing in the joy too! William and Stand in the Joy have now been recognized with awards and nominations by the JUNOs, 3 Canadian Folk Music Awards (Contemporary Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Solo Artist of the Year), Americana Honors & Awards
(Emerging Artist of the Year nomination), Folk Alliance International (Album of the Year nomination), and the Jim Beam Indies (Folk/Roots Artist of the Year nomination). Quite the list. That album must be pretty good! Someone even tattooed it on their arm!
Back in Halifax, it was a whirlwind JUNO Awards weekend for William Prince, which included a performance at the Songwriter Circle (listen here), William's win at the Opening Night Awards, and two appearances on the JUNO Award broadcast. William's part in a Robbie Robertson tribute performance with Allison Russell, Aysanabee, Julian Taylor, Logan Staats and Shawnee Kish brought the house down, and he also handed out the Breakthrough Artist of the Year award to TALK. What we are saying is that, in addition to winning a JUNO, William Prince won the JUNOs.

July Talk Release Remember Never Before (Deluxe) with Two New Songs and Live Cuts
July Talk have expanded their 2023 album, Remember Never Before, with a new digital deluxe edition that includes two new songs and three live versions recorded on their album release tour.
First of the two new songs, “No Safe + Sound”, produced by Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene), is a series of promises. “It is about greeting uncertain and imperfect futures with a willingness to show up and keep trying,” writes co-lead Leah Fay Goldstein.
“No Safe + Sound” arrives with a brand new official video. If I were Leah Fay Goldstein, I would probably describe this video as freely wheeling through space and feeling, total immersion - in movement, water, and pure love - shows us a path forward through the anxieties of the unknown. Watch it here.
Second new song “Rabbit Side,” produced by Nyles Spencer, turns a campfire game into visions that blur the lines between salvation and destruction. “Rabbit Side,” has its own original commissioned art by award- winning illustrator Barbara Reid. Check it out here.

July Talk have a busy summer ahead with plenty of festival appearances, check out the tour dates and shop brand new merch including a Remember Never Before blanket just added to the official July Talk store here.
The Dead South Go #1 with Chains & Stakes, Out Now
The Dead South released their fourth studio album, Chains & Stakes, on February 9, 2024. The album debuted at #1 on the UK Country Chart, unseating Taylor Swift herself (how will she ever recover from this embarrassment?), as well as #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart. So yeah, it’s going pretty well.
Watch the new official video for “Yours To Keep” from frequent Dead South video collaborators Two Brothers Films here. Watch The Dead South make their Opry debut with “In Hell I’ll Be In Good Company” here.
The band has since been on tour throughout the USA, Australia and New Zealand, selling out more shows in bigger venues than ever before (which is really saying something since selling out shows is kinda their thing). With a brand new set design, which I must say looks very cool, the Chains & Stakes World Tour rolls on throughout the rest of this year, with upcoming treks in Europe, the USA (including 2 nights at Nashville’s The Ryman Auditorium in July, and two nights at Dillon Amphitheatre in Colorado on the summer schedule) and finally Canada, where the band will play their first arena show and headline Massey Hall in December. I feel like if this momentum keeps up we are going to have to colonize a new planet that exists only for The Dead South to keep touring at larger and larger venues. We can sell freeze dried astronaut ice cream at the concession stands (because other planets are in outer space, duh).
If you’re looking for exclusive vinyl variants, limited edition merch, ticket pre- sales and more, have we got an internet websiteTM for you!! Sign up for The Dead South’s one-stop super fan shop here.

Six Shooter Mini Bullets
Tanya Tagaq recently completed a groundbreaking residency at Brown University with performances that featured the world’s first throat-singing choir and collaborations with composers Jeffrey Ziegler, Paola Prestini and Kronos Quartet, who call Tanya’s work “more important than Beethoven.” Tagaq performed again with Kronos at Big Ears in Knoxville, TN and will be publishing It Bears Repeating, her first children’s book (with a punny title that certainly meets my approval), in August. Pre-order the book here.
Whitehorse will be hitting the road as part of Sarah McLachlan’s band for the Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th Anniversary Tour. This is a very full-circle moment for Luke, who was also part of the original tour. We aren’t going to divulge Luke’s age here, but by my math this makes him AT LEAST 30 years old.
Speaking of Luke Doucet, Veal may have wrapped their unexpected and awesome reunion tour but they aren’t done with their surprise comeback yet! Veal also spent some extra time together in the studio, reunited with former bassist and now super-producer Howard Redekopp. Stay tuned for more unlikely news from the world of Veal.
T. Thomason played an excellent JUNOFest show (featuring a wicked cover of the Pixies classic “Where Is My Mind” at one of the many JUNO after parties) in Halifax at the end of March and is working on many new things to share this year. When that work is done, we will share it. But for now these many new things shall remain shrouded in mystery.
