Did you know that the plural of the word vortex is vortices? Of course you did, you are so smart...but hahaha gotcha! Trick question! Vortexes is also correct! Wow, what a great little prank. Anyway I hate polar vortices, and I wish they would just stay in Siberia where they belong. Boo polar vortexes.
The Dead South Have a New Album, Grand Ole Opry Debut and World Tour Ahead
2024 will be a big year for The Dead South. Even bigger than 2023 (by a factor of approximately 1, numerically speaking). Their fourth studio album is called Chains & Stakes and it arrives on February 9, 2024, it is also bigger than their third album (by a factor of approximately 1, numerically speaking). For this album, the band traveled to Mexico City where they met up with Sugar & Joy producer Jimmy Nutt and engineer Cody Simmons from Muscle Shoals. A team so heavy, you would need either several groups of fish swimming together in a pattern resembling large biceps, or a sandbar resembling some ripped abs (either way, some muscle shoals) to lift them. The result is 13 songs of plot twists, family trees, grudges, insurance scams, bacon (omg everyone loves bacon, amiright?!), burials, banjo riffs and more (banjo riffs).
We are excited to offer a variety of different vinyl options for this release, including limited edition picture disc and an exclusive “Corona Haze” (did we mention that they made this album in Mexico?) available only at independent retailers across North America. Follow this link to order Chains & Stakes on your favourite format here. UK fans can also order Amazon exclusives signed CDs. If you’re a fan of exclusive merch, ticket pre-sales, sneak peeks of new music and more, please sign up for The Dead South’s fan hub here.
New videos!
Watch “Tiny Wooden Box” filmed in Drumheller, AB and directed by Jeremy Chugg here.
Watch “A Little Devil” filmed at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville here.
On the subject of Nashville, did any of you watch that TV show called Nashville? I sure did, and wow did it ever get convoluted near the end of the series. Also speaking of Nashville (the city, not the TV show), The Dead South will be celebrating the release of Chains & Stakes in the most Nashville way possible with their Grand Ole Opry debut. This is obviously a huge deal! They’ll also return to the Ryman Auditorium (original home of the Opry) for two nights in July as part of the Chains & Stakes World Tour. The Chains & Stakes World Tour begins in February and will travel across the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Canada and Mexico (so far). Highlights include the band’s first arena shows in Canada, major festivals including WinterWonderGrass (Colorado), Byron Bay Bluesfest (Australia) and more. See the list of tour dates below. Tickets for all shows are on sale now, and The Dead South have a tendency to sell out shows wherever they go, so I would probably recommend smashing that buy link pretty quickly.
William Prince Like You’ve Never Heard Before and Huge Canadian Tour
William Prince is full of surprises, not unlike a piñata or an episode of Love Island. He recently covered “I Want It That Way” for Spotify Singles (it’s a must listen, do that here). Now, “When You Miss Someone” from his most recent album, Stand in the Joy, gets the remix treatment by Roosevelt (Taylor Swift, Chvrches). Speaking of Love Island, I just did a bit of quick math (i.e. I looked at some episode lists with my calculator app open). It turns out that from what I have seen of the UK, Australia, and US versions of the reality TV franchise, I have now personally watched approximately 627 episodes of Love Island. That’s some time well spent! In hindsight, all of this time spent watching Love Island was actually very forward thinking research into whether William Prince’s “When You Miss Someone - Roosevelt Remix” would be a good fit for the soundtrack of that show. And guess what?!
I have determined that it most certainly is! Picture this, if you will… Liberty chooses to couple up with Sammy over Nate in the big recoupling, y’know just to get to know him (but still fully expecting to be able to crack on with Nate at the same time, who she has a better existing connection with), not realizing that Nate would then be dumped immediately from the island! As Nate sadly rolls his suitcase away from the Villa, the camera pans to Liberty who sheds a single tear while William Prince’s “When You Miss Someone - Roosevelt Remix” plays. Somebody please make this sync a reality. For me.
Listen to “When You Miss Someone - Roosevelt Remix" here.
In February, William will be boarding the trusty ol’ tour bus to cross Canada for his largest tour yet. Shows will include Massey Hall and performances at 2,500-seat theatres across the country (we only booked shows at venues that have exactly 2,500 seats, no more, no less. 2,501 seats? 2,499 seats? Sorry, no William Prince for you). It is a truly coast to coast tour with a massive hometown show at Centennial Concert Hall on March 2. See the complete list of tour dates below, and see you there.
I also want to quickly recap a giant heap of highlights since Stand in the Joy came out last April, William was nominated for Americana Honors & Awards Emerging Artist of the Year, he played with Willie Nelson at Luck (Willie’s ranch), he visited the Tiny Desk, he toured with The War & Treaty and he performed at the Country Music Hall of Fame, among other major big deals (we don’t have all day to list off major big deals here, but just trust us, there are so many big deals, and they are all major). You can watch William’s performance at the CMHOF here. Stand in the Joy was also just announced as one of the nominations for Folk Alliance International’s Album of the Year. Congrats, William!

NYSSA Shakes Us Where We’re Foolish with New Album and Shows in Alberta
We officially welcomed NYSSA to Six Shooter last summer (in a mystical ceremony during a full moon in the middle of the woods), with her excellent song “Breakup Party.” Now it’s time for the full album, Shake Me Where I’m Foolish, which will be released on February 1, marking the pagan celebration of Imbolc. So if you are looking for some rock and roll music to break up the grueling stretch between winter solstice and the spring equinox, have we got an album for you! NYSSA’s label debut is truly something special: an invitation to travel to Punk Rock Narnia, with flutes, sirens, latex, minotaurs and more (flutes). This collection was mixed by the legendary Sylvia Massy (and mastered by the substantially less legendary, but still kind of a bit legendary in his own way, guy we hire to write this newsletter).
NYSSA will be heading out west for two festival shows in Calgary and Edmonton: Winterruption and Big Winter Classic. Alberta is the place to be this month, with even more Six Shooter artists participating in festivals this year. Read on to find out who will be there.
Order Shake Me Where I’m Foolish here (this release will be in stores as of February 2, 2024). Consult your Wheel of the Year to make predictions about future NYSSA new music drops.
Elliott BROOD’s New Album Town, Ontario Tour and More New Music
Elliott BROOD celebrate an impressive 20 years (!) as a band with two (!!) new albums, and tours in Canada, Europe and the UK. That’s 20 full years of people saying “whoa, that dude is playing the guitar while sitting down and playing bass with his feet!”
On part one of this two-album set, Town, Elliott BROOD rumble and rock over a map of all the towns and cities that we call home, that’s right, both Toronto AND Edmonton. Oh wait, I think it’s actually more about all the towns and cities that they call home. With its ode to their original home of Windsor, ON, “Rose City,” (which is decidedly not Toronto or Edmonton), the city folk sounds of Town are classic Elliott BROOD in all the best ways.
Listen to Town here.
Order Town on CD or limited edition vinyl here, and come back soon to hear part two, Country, out in the Spring. Speaking of Town & Country, when I was a young teenager I really wanted a T&C Surf Designs t-shirt, even though I lived nowhere near an ocean and had never even touched a surfboard. Now I am a responsible adult who knows that you can only wear t-shirts for activities that you have actually participated in, such as attending Elliott BROOD concerts. For their twentieth year, Elliott BROOD will keep on doing what they do, with tours across Ontario in February and in Europe in April, both tours being a good opportunity to purchase a t-shirt like a responsible adult. Check the tour dates below and stay tuned for more announcements.
Don’t miss the limited edition Elliott BROOD collaboration with Town Brewery, the “Dark End of the Road” stout, available now (it is stout season after all) at the Town Brewery taproom, retail shop, and online store.
Who Is Peter Dreams?
Fans of July Talk, fans of collaborations and fans of being the first to hear something exciting and new should follow PETER DREAMS. Peter Dreams (Peter Dreimanis from July Talk) has recorded his first solo album, with Toronto band MOONRIIVR, which will be released on Six Shooter Records in 2024. I expect that I probably also dream, but tbh I never remember my dreams, and also my last name isn’t Dreimanas (and my first name isn’t Peter either, for that matter), so I think it’s significantly more appropriate that Peter gets to use this stage name. Not that I was even considering it, but um, yeah I glad we cleared that up.
For the real sneak preview, don’t miss the chance to see Peter Dreams with MOONRIIVR in Alberta later this month, including at Winterruption. Check out the specifics in the tour dates below.
Veal Announces Tour, Stream Hot Loser Now
In a move no one had on their 2024 music bingo card, scrappy 90s power trio Veal will return to the stage in March for club shows across Ontario and Western Canada. SAHPRISE! We found Chang!
With a reputation for blistering live shows and lyrics built on life’s weirder moments, the band made its mark on the 90s (and early 2000’s) scene. Veal was also the launchpad for a multitude of musical directions and projects by its members. For example, Veal frontman Luke Doucet went on to a solo career and then to form award-winning duo Whitehorse, who you may know from such righteous record labels as Six Shooter Records! That’s us! Another fun little Veal factoid is that our most excellent music festival Interstellar Rodeo (RIP) was named after a Veal lyric from their song “Cowboy”.
Veal’s debut album, Hot Loser, is also now available to stream worldwide for the first time. The album contains the original version of “Mexico, Texaco,” later recorded for Whitehorse’s The Fate of this World Depends on This Kiss.
Listen to Hot Loser here.
Whitehorse Takes Their Country Era to the East Coast Tour
Speaking of the aforementioned Veal alumnus, Whitehorse had a pretty rippin’ 2023 themselves. They continued to build their vast library of albums with I’m Not Crying, You’re Crying, released last year to 4-star reviews in North America and the UK. The duo’s seventh full-length studio album was nominated for the Canadian Country Music Awards’ Alternative Album of the Year last fall. With I’m Not Crying, Whitehorse added a classic country sound to a collection that includes pop noir, beefy twang, spacy folk and bluesy rock. Personally, as a vegetarian, I generally try to avoid anything that has a beefy twang, but if it’s just in the sonics of a Whitehorse album that’s cool.
After listening to this album, if you’re looking for more of Whitehorse in their country era, don’t miss their covers of “Summer Wine” and “We’ll Sweep Out The Ashes,” available on all streaming platforms.
East Coast fans will see Whitehorse in early February, find tickets and details below.

Tanya Tagaq in True Detective, Split Tooth out in the UK
Tanya Tagaq will appear on screen and in the soundtrack on HBO’s True Detective: Night Country (season four) with Jodie Foster. Filmed in Iceland, the new season premiered on January 14, and is only a couple episodes in, so if you haven’t started it yet you can easily catch up! It is the perfect show to watch if you need a mysterious and spooky break between seasons of Love Island!
Tagaq’s award-winning ‘mythobiography’ Split Tooth was just released in the UK and is already nominated for the Gordon Burn Prize. Sick Burn (prize)!
Boy Golden’s For Jimmy, “King of Western Swing” and More
Winnipeg’s golden boy Boy Golden released new music throughout 2023, including the EP For Jimmy (which includes one of our all-time favourites “Mountain Road”) and additional songs from the For Jimmy era: “King of Western Swing” (an 8-minute and fully justifiable anti-Spade Cooley tirade), the Jimmy Buffet-esque “Aeroplane Song” and the perfect soundtrack for new years resolutions, “All These Years” and “Exactly Where I’m Standing At”, freshly released at the end of December.
With his triumphant surprise headline slot at Winnipeg Folk Fest, a successful first headline tour of Canada and the USA, his mind-blowing debut in Nashville at AmericanaFest, Boy Golden made a lot of fans in 2023.
Order For Jimmy on CD and vinyl here. Hot tip, it makes a great gift for anyone you know named Jimmy (or James). Certainly a much better gift idea for your friend Jimmy than a Stanley quencher cup, despite what you may have seen on the news (aka TikTok). Listen to For Jimmy and other new songs here.
Six Shooter Mini Bullets
The Violet Archers, solo project of Rheostatics’ Tim Vesely, released two more songs in 2023 including “Animal Song” with Sarah Harmer (also available in Atmos/spatial audio) and “Nobody Knows.” Why wasn’t the second song released in Atmos/spatial audio? Nobody knows. Listen here.
The Deep Dark Woods are back, deeper, darker, and woodier than ever! We are thrilled that The Deep Dark Woods will be returning to the stage with a spring tour of the UK and Europe. Touring Europe is sweet, because even the gas stations have good sandwiches. The UK has marmite crisps, which are also pretty good. Check details below. Details on the tour I mean, not The Deep Dark Woods’ gas station lunch.
A big newsletter high five to T. Thomason, who signed to Six Shooter Records last year. Last November, T. curated and performed at an entire month of Tuesday night shows at Toronto’s new Hugh’s Room to showcase queer & trans joy and excellence. The series featured songwriter circles, full bands and drag performances. The only downside was that the opportunity was missed to call it T. Thomason’s Toronto Tuesdays, which would have been a totally top tier take on alliteration. It was, however, called C U Next Tuesday, which is infinitely better anyway.
