Hello! Did you miss us?! It’s been a long time since the last time we sent one of these newsletters out! Soz, we really didn’t intend to leave you clicking refresh on your inboxes for quite that long, we just got super busy! Summer is finally upon us again, and we are turbo chuffed about it. Sure, we went straight out of the COVID-pan and into the wildfire, and the neighbor kid who lives across the street from me has a lemonade stand where he is charging $5.00 + GST for a little cup of lemonade (let me see your GST number, kid), but overall things are great! The chambray ankle pants and sandals have been brought out of hibernation, my garden has been planted, the pet-nat has been cracked, and Six Shooter has (a combined) one billion new releases, artists, and performances to tell you about!

Six Shooter Welcomes T. Thomason

A singularly talented, multi-hyphenated performer-on-stage-and-screen (see? so many hyphens), Halifax-based T. Thomason is coming in hot as an important and inspiring artist. Honest, vulnerable, yet firmly standing his ground, T. Thomason is ready to meet what’s ahead with uncommon composure and creative energy.

Thomason has started the year strong with a feature in Elle’s Canadian Artists to Watch in 2023, a killer SXSW debut, his role as Jackson Canaday in new TV series Sullivan’s Crossing (airing on CTV), Six Shooter’s re-release of the Bruce Cockburn cover, “Lovers In A Dangerous Time,” and forthcoming “Lovers In A Dangerous Time” remix by St. South (out June 23, 2023).

Thoughtful and true, T. Thomason’s songs shine through the darkness in the world. Since he began releasing music as a teenager, Halifax-based Thomason has been on a journey of discovery. Lead by curiosity as his way of being, Thomason approaches songwriting as a commitment to “say tough things tenderly,” a practice that reveals an impressive depth of wisdom, clarity and courage in the young artist. Thomason’s attentive, confident presence is felt in all aspects of his music, in songs that build from ballad to banger, in songs that balance confession, confrontation and resolution, in songs that lay it all bare. Highly recommended for sweet bbs in their truest colours, and specifically guaranteed for fans of MUNA, Maggie Rogers, Troye Sivan and Kim Petras.

We are excited to welcome T. to Toronto throughout June for a variety of fun things including the Six Shooter Pride Party (read on for details and ticket link below).

Six Shooter Welcomes NYSSA

Toronto pagan-punk-poet NYSSA has put her hands into the lion’s mouth, gathering her performing and songwriting powers to conjure the unruly energy of rock n’ roll. NYSSA sings about wild things, old gods of myth and magick (that’s right, magic with a “k”.), romance-beyond-borders, and the exorcism of trauma, all of which seem to be pretty good subject matter for rock music, if you ask me, a budding rock music enthusiast.

A student of signs and symbols, cards and caverns, NYSSA’s witchy ways shape her artistic process, a musical quest to seek meaning in chaos. Drawing on the idols, from Bacchus to Iggy Pop, NYSSA gathers force and transforms each stage into her altar of deep feeling, movement, and joy.

NYSSA’s lyrics are poetic and clear, lunar, eerie, angry. As Dionysus would want it, over- abundance is the way. Guided by the incantation and invocation of the three C’s: Collaboration, Choreo, Covenhood!, NYSSA’s sound and stories run deep into ancient mythos, Celtic lore and back through our modern idols. Re-swaggering, re-wilding hyper-masc night moves and magick hips (think Jagger, Mink Deville, Danzig), NYSSA’s magnetic, elastic ways make satyrs of us all.

NYSSA is currently in the midst of her “Gemini Season” residency at The Dakota Tavern. See the show Wednesdays @ 10:30 June 14 and 21 and look for new music at the close of Gemini Season. Tickets available here

Six Shooter Throws A Pride Party, You’re Invited

At Six Shooter we celebrate Pride everyday, and we also love throwing a party! Come celebrate Pride and Toronto’s indie music scene at the Six Shooter Records (aptly named) Go B*tch Pride Party! Six Shooter joins party forces with High Priestess Publishing and Twin Fang Records for a night of live music, dance, Drag Kings, and more. 1 night, 6 LGBTQ2S+ artists, 200 feather boas (for me... I’m not sure what you are gonna wear). Tickets are extremely limited. Reserve yours today via donation to The 519, a local organization committed to the health, happiness and full participation of the 2SLGBTQ+ communities. Go Bitch!

The “Mountain Road” Less Traveled: Boy Golden
Announces New EP, For Jimmy. Pre-Order Now.

Welcome to Boy Golden’s disco country & western variety hour, beamed straight from either the 1940s or the future, or maybe back and forth super fast between the 1940s and the future, which seems possible in a world where you can beam in music from a particular era anyway. You’ll find his new song, “Mountain Road,” on the map somewhere between Rocky Mountain High and Mount Airy Hill. “Mountain Road” hails from the new EP For Jimmy, coming July 21, 2023 on Six Shooter Records (that’s us!). WATCH HERE.

On “Mountain Road,” Winnipeg’s Boy Golden tickles that urge in all of us to seek something new; to change our surroundings in the hopes that it might change us. Here we find the Church of Better Daze minister shedding his proverbial robes in the "Blue Hills" - a place personal to Boy Golden but existing in many other places and memories elsewhere - in search of the view from above.

Having listened to this great song and in turn had my urge to seek something new tickled... I’m wondering if any of you are aware of a type of melon other than watermelon that is still crunchy when ripe? I feel like there must be, but I have not yet encountered a crunchy melon alternative. I know I could just ask chatGPT (this would be a fantastic use of AI resources), but I prefer to ask you newsletter readers for your REAL intelligence on this crunchy melon matter. No robots stealing your job on my watch!

Back to Boy Golden though, a genuine student of Townes Van Zandt and Willie Nelson as much as Dwight Yoakam and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Boy Golden surely crafts his own type and style. His philosophy might help us all to blur borders and old definitions of genres we thought we knew, like Steve Lacy or Justin Vernon do for Pop music, or DJ Python does for Reggaeton music, or Jud Jud does for acapella hardcore punk music.

William Prince’s Stand in the Joy Brings A Lot of It

So far this year, William Prince has made his debut on the Grand Ole Opry, sang with Willie Nelson at his ranch in Luck, TX, toured with The War and Treaty, and was nominated for the extremely prestigious Americana Honors & Awards’ Emerging Artist of the Year. So yeah, pretty good year so far, lol. All of these great things connect to his new album, Stand in the Joy, which has brought plenty of critical acclaim, many new songs for his fans to love, and a very busy schedule. In fact, William Prince is so busy that he may have to change the name of his album to Run Around in a Circle in the Joy just to keep up! I should probably suggest that.

Produced by Dave Cobb, Stand in the Joy is a work of self-actualization; of Prince fully believing in himself. “The things I wished for most in the hard times - peace of mind, love and happiness - are things I now have.” Whenever I read a quote from William Prince, I hear it in his comforting/captivating deep voice in my head, and I’m like “tell me more William Prince in my head!”.

When I Say Yee, Whitehorse Say Haw:
Country Twist and Toronto Homecoming Shows

With their newest album, I’m Not Crying, You’re Crying, Whitehorse proved once again they can really do anything. That’s right, they can both honky AND tonk! This immaculate 70s country collection sees Whitehorse at their absolute best, from the overflowing recycling box inspired “If The Loneliness Don’t Kill Me” to the plot twist missing person’s report punchline of “Division 5.” Come for the disco Dolly of “Bet The Farm” and stay for the emotional devastation of “Leave Me As You Found Me.” Longtime fans might even recognize Luke’s riffs of “Manitoba Bound.” With guitars and harmonies aplenty, Whitehorse’s songwriting truly shines. They wear their ten gallon hats well!

Oh hey, and guess what?! It was Luke’s birthday last week! Luke is finally over 18-ish, which means it is now legal for him to drink Langhe Nebbiolo (or whatever) in Manitoba! Congrats Luke, you did it! Happy birthday!

Whitehorse rides through Toronto (on e-scooters) for 3 nights at TD Music Hall, a homecoming even for a band that has called many cities their homes (and also the road, maaaan). Don’t miss Whitehorse on stage June 14, 15 and 16 with special guest NQ Arbuckle, speaking of whomst...

NQ Arbuckle Plays the Long Game: New Album Out Now

NQ Arbuckle is back to remind us it’s never too late, never too long, and never the wrong time to offer up a new album! It’s been a minute (*cough, 9 years*), but our OG homeslice is back with an album that checks all the NQ boxes: quality songwriting, esoteric poetry references, unlikely combinations, and his classic ironic-optimistic worldview. And, there’s a Nirvana cover for you youngsters. Many wins here.

On Love Songs For The Long Game, NQ reunites with Luke Doucet, who produced the band’s 2002 debut album and most of the others since then.

Watch NQ Arbuckle’s backyard solo performances of “Alabama All Nighters” and “Funny Bone”.

NQ Arbuckle is currently on tour in Ontario with Whitehorse, with 3 nights at Toronto’s TD Music Hall to come. See tour dates below. “On tour in Ontario” is really fun to say. Try it.

July Talk Made A Doc, Continue to Rock, My New Puppy Stole My Sock, For the First Time Ever I Just Bought Crocs

Remember when July Talk premiered their new album at The Horseshoe Tavern last fall? It feels like a billion years ago to us, but hopefully it feels like just yesterday to you. That album, Remember Never Before, finally arrived on Six Shooter Records! From the blistering opening track “After This” to the devastating, soul-searching “When You Stop,” Remember Never Before shows a band continuing to push their own boundaries and challenge themselves to live fully in the moment. Remember Never Before is July Talk, now. Oh, and it also just won Album of the Year at the Indie Awards, ha ha, woooo!!

On top of having a new – award winning – album, their first documentary, July Talk: Love Lives Here, has premiered at Hot Docs and is currently making the rounds to indie cinemas across Canada. In case you missed it, the documentary, directed by Brittany Farhat, chronicles the band’s pandemic Drive In Show process, from creation to glorious, mind-altering execution, and goes deep into the band’s 10 year history. Check out the list of screenings in the tour dates below.

On top of that, Leah and Peter are currently nominated for the Prism Prize for their work as directors of Tanya Tagaq’s video “Colonizer.” Watch that here.

July Talk recently shared a stunning piano version of “When You Stop” from Remember Never Before. Listen here

The Dead South Take Over Nashville: Ryman Debut and Bonus Ryman Eve Show at East Side Bowl Announced. On Tour with Guest Corb Lund.

The Dead South are gearing up to make their debut at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, July 7. The show sold out so quickly (as is the Dead South way) that they’ve since added a warm-up at Eastside Bowl, July 6. Get the tickets before they sell out, which, as noted, they tend to do. The Dead South then hit the road with Corb Lund for shows across the USA. Ready your ears (cotton swab the inside bit, scrub behind ‘em) for new material during this tour, as the band recently wrapped recording a new album in Mexico City, and have been practicing the phrase “this next one is a new one” in their rehearsals.

Alberta fans should plan ahead for August 12, when The Dead South make their way to the stunning Badlands Amphitheatre with also stunning special guests Reuben and the Dark with Bullhorn Singers.

All of the above activities sound to me like the actions of a Roots/Folk Artist of the Year, and guess what, I’m right! The Dead South were awarded with this most rootsy prestigious title at the 2023 Indie Awards!

Tanya Tagaq On Stage, On Screen, On Paper

Tanya Tagaq currently has two videos nominated for this year’s Prism Prize, “Colonizer” (directed by Leah and Peter of July Talk) and “Teeth Agape” (directed/animated by David Seitz). If they both win (is this possible?), then it will be a delicious Prism Prize sandwich.

Watch “Teeth Agape” - here

Tanya continues to expand her long list of accomplishments with some exciting new projects, from joining the cast of True Detective’s fourth season to announcing a collaboration with Brown University. Tanya also wrote a poem for the new Rebel Girls book, "Dear Rebel". Her documentary Ever Deadly is also available to stream on CBC Gem in June and on TVO. Tagaq is also confirmed to perform her original compositions at Carnegie Hall in November with Kronos Quartet. You know, just a normal, average workload, and typical amount of stunning creative output. Tanya must have so much spare time!
