Hi! Hello! Welcome to our first newsletter of 2019! Oh what a year it has been so far, we have been so busy (and cold, dang that was some winter) that we forgot to let you know what we have been up to. But here we are to get you up to date! Perhaps you have been following us on all of the SOCIALS (that’s cool industry lingo, btw) and think you already know everything, but I promise we will slip a few insider nuggets in here for ya, so you can still be ahead of the game.

Does anyone else ever use their nose to make sure the screen on their smart phone doesn’t go to sleep while trying to look at the dang Six Shooter socials while doing dishes?

You may need to do that with this edition of our newsletter, it’s a long one.

YOUR 2019 INTERSTELLAR RODEO LINEUP IS COMING

OMFG, it’s that time already! Interstellar Rodeo cheeky reveal time! The “!” Key on my keyboard is a little sticky right now, so every time I type an exclamation point I have to really mash it like I mean it!

Tune in on March 27 at 11am MT where we will be broadcasting live from ATB Arts & Culture Branch in Edmonton to reveal Interstellar Rodeo’s 2019 lineup. Watch the announcement on Interstellar Rodeo’s Facebook page or follow along on Twitter to see who will be performing at Interstellar Rodeo’s eighth edition. Maybe if you watch live, you will see me in the background just absolutely annihilating some snacks! The snacks were very delicious at last year’s announcement thingy, lemme tell ya.

I have no doubt that once you hear who we are bringing to the festival you will start frothing at the ears (ew) and want to secure your attendance. Previous ticket buyers (our heroes) simply have to log in to their account at the Six Shooter store to grab pre-sale tickets, which will be available on Thursday, March 28 at 10am MT. That’s the day after the announcement! Instant grats! Tickets will be on sale to the general public (welcome, n00bs) on Friday, March 29 at 10am MT.

Interstellar Rodeo happens July 26-28, 2019 at the Heritage Amphitheatre, William Hawrelak Park, in Edmonton. It is a very excellent good time, with not that many lightning storms at all.

JUNO 2019 RECAP

We’re Lon-done ON-tired-yo after partying all of last weekend at the 2019 JUNO Awards. We danced, we partied, we JUNOFested. Time for a big ol’ snooooze!

Congratulations to our deep dark friends The Deep Dark Woods for their nomination for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year for Yarrow, and to our white and horsey friends Whitehorse, who were nominated for Adult Contemporary Album of the Year for A Whitehorse Winter Classic.

Whitehorse performed on the big show with host Sarah McLachlan, and I suggest you watch that two-song medley here (fun fact: Luke Doucet helped write both of those songs). My favorite part of the video is Luke’s very brief moment of guitar-face at 0:59. So fleeting, yet so satisfying. Quiet part... *face scronch*... quiet part.

SIX SHOOTER MANAGEMENT WELCOMES WILLIAM PRINCE TO THE ROSTER

Six Shooter Management is extremely pleased to welcome William Prince to the artist roster. You know that emoji that has the big smile, rosy cheeks, and closed eyes? We all look like that.

As anticipation for the follow-up to 2015’s JUNO Award winning, and truly captivating, debut album Earthly Days builds, Prince is busy with touring that has included a run of shows opening for frickin’ Neil Young complete with two nights in Winnipeg. That is gnarly. I’m going to blast some William Prince on my Pono right now to celebrate both of these legends. William Prince will headline shows across western Canada, from the Yukon to Saskatchewan, before making his Stagecoach Festival debut this April.

SIX SHOOTER MANAGEMENT WELCOMES ZAKI IBRAHIM TO THE ROSTER

Six Shooter management is clearly building up our ranks these days! We are Pokémon-ing all the great artists we can (gotta catch em all.) We are again very thrilled to welcome Zaki Ibrahim to our management roster!

The enigmatic, highly acclaimed songwriter Zaki Ibrahim has returned from South Africa to Toronto, following the 2018 release of The Secret Life of Planets, which Pitchfork describes as “a future-soul marvel that connects sounds across time...creating thrilling moments of pop music synthesized through her wise and worldly vision.” A creative nomad, Ibrahim’s extensive and varied network of collaborators and contributors has established a global presence that is frankly about to blow the eff up, and we can’t wait to be there for it all. “The first time I saw Zaki perform at Polaris several years ago blew me away. It was a performance I will never forget.,” says Six Shooter Management President Helen Britton (aka Helsy). Every now and then we ask Helsy if she has forgotten about the Zaki Ibrahim performance at Polaris several years ago, y’know just to do our own fact checking and quality control, and... she hasn’t forgotten! Wow, impressive stuff! Luckily the internet never forgets either (unless it’s Myspace deleting all your fave tunes, that you totally go to Myspace all the time to listen to), and you can watch Zaki’s performance of “The Do” here: Polaris Prize Gala

En plus (just to get my French on), you can catch Zaki live in Paris on April 16 at 8 pm at the Canadian Cultural Centre, or live in Bourges on April 18 at the Canadian Specimens showcase during Le Printemps de Bourges Festival. Allons-y!

THE DEAD SOUTH CONTINUE TO SELL OUT ALL SHOWS EVERYWHERE

The Dead South are very much alive. The Very Much Alive South, you might say. They are starching up their old timey outfits, reinforcing their stomping boots, moisturizing their snapping fingers, and in general getting ready for a return to Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands, where their entire tour save for one lone show is already sold out. That one show is gonna suuuuck. JK, it will be the super elite intimate one that everyone will be talking about for years to come. Unless it sells out, then it will just be another normal sold out show like the rest of them, ho hum. The band also just announced their Summer Crawl tour, with stops in Calgary (with our friends at Big Rock Brewery, also with Whitehorse), Reno, Dallas, RED ROCKS OMG THAT VENUE IS AMAZING, St. Louis and more. The (very much alive) Dead South are planning to actually physically crawl from city to city at this point. That might change by the time they open up google maps though (or an abacus, or whatever old timey devices they are into). Then, they’ll be back to the UK in June for festivals and more shows (Oxford, Northampton and Bath), which will also undoubtedly sell out. Dead South tickets, man. Hot item in the streets these days.

Speaking of hot and Bath, in #SixShooterSync news: tune your ears (just grab them lobes and tweak ’em around while making static-y radio sounds) to the epic trailer for a new show on EPIX called Perpetual Grace, LTD, starring Ben Kingsley. It’s a “Shakespeare meets Film Noir” series. Watch it here.

TANYA TAGAQ RELEASES NEW TOOTHSAYER EP

Environmental, historical, futuristic, experimental: Tanya Tagaq’s Toothsayer EP conveys the extreme and deadly elements of winter in the High Arctic. From the nightmarish shards of “Icebreaker” to the crystalline delicacy of the title track to the terrifying serenity of “Hypothermia,” Tagaq also describes physiological sensations of snowblindness and fatal exposure to the cold in exquisitely unnerving detail. This reminds me of this past February, where my dog described in unnerving detail how much he

disliked having to wear boots every day by giving me those big puppydog eyes. But like, significantly less extreme than what Tanya Tagaq describes. It was pretty frickin cold around here, but not High Arctic cold, more like dumb old Polar Vortex cold. The looks my dog gave me were still pretty crystalline at least though. Just maybe not quite as nightmarish or terrifyingly serene.

The digital EP (speaking of cold), made with long-time percussionist Jean Martin and UK experimental electronica artist Ash Koosha, originated as a score for the National Maritime Museum’s permanent Polar Worlds exhibit. Tagaq has upcoming performances in London, UK on March 27, at ReWire festival in Netherlands and in Washington, DC later this April, among other performances and Split Tooth readings.

Listen to Tagaq talk about winter in the Arctic in this BBC6 interview, or read Pitchfork’s glowing review of Toothsayer here. Be a Toothlistener and listen to Toothsayer here.

WHITEHORSE RELEASED THE NORTHERN SOUTH VOL. 2, THE SECOND INSTALMENT OF BLUES COVERS PROJECT

My next door neighbors are having a giant party right now. It is loud, and I am trying very hard to keep my cool and remember what youth feels like, but really I want to walk out there with my laptop and just be like “um, helllooooo, beer bongerssss, I am trying to write about Whitehorse over heeeere! Could you please shut up and go inside and quietly listen to their JUNO nominated holiday album, while I get this dooone? Ok, thx, bai!”

Whitehorse made their return to the early days of electric blues this January with the second instalment of The Northern South, a project that melds OG blues jamz with the duo’s steamy, swampy, squalling approach. I mean, the originals are also very steamy, swampy, and squalling, but Whitehorse have their own take on the S trifecta. They back this up with an F quadfecta (is that a word?) of foreplay, foreboding, fever and Fenders. I love alliteration. Check out this very tight, very Whitehorse take on blues bops, hellfire gospels and sexed-up cuts from Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon, Jimmy Reed, Slim Harpo and more.

The Northern South Vol. 2 went straight to #1 at CKUA and hauled in some decidedly bitchin’ reviews from across North America in English and French, including Paste, Exclaim, PopMatters, Le Devoir and the Daily Nebraskan (they loved it!), of all places. I always figured Nebraskans were all Nebbiolo drinking, bra wearing, ska fans, so their support comes as a bit of a surprise, tbh.

Congrats to Scott from Halifax who won the coveted Gretsch Billy Bo (our most successful contest ever, for obvious reasons). May you shred many epic facemelters, Scott of Halifax.

For those who love it live, check out Whitehorse’s “Die Alone,” which just landed on streaming platforms such as this.

ENSIGN BRODERICK MAKES RECORD STORE DAY CANADA TWICE AS NICE

For his second Record Store Day offering, the Making Vinyl Award nominated Ensign Broderick announces a deluxe double vinyl creation BloodMyth / BloodCrush. BloodCrush, originally released in 2018, is a meditation on frailty and fallibility, brought to you by the letters f, a, and i. This is a collection of songs that edge ever closer to the brink. Someone needs to give our buddy Ensign a hug and some nice magnesium chloride flakes for a relaxing bath. BloodMyth, the companion album, is a song cycle based in part on the seven deadly sins. Spooky! This art-packed exclusive offers vinyl collectors a first listen of BloodMyth ahead of its worldwide digital release. I’m a total wimp, and even the word blood makes me hella squeamish, but this double LP is very tight.

Each double LP comes complete with original cover art by painter Kris Knight, artful booklets that feature polaroid photographs by German photographer Stefanie Schneider and handwritten lyrics by Ensign Broderick, with blood red splatter pattern 180 gram vinyl within, and and one of five prints, some of which are by Kris Knight, and others by Stefanie Schneider. Um, wow. That is some extra Extra.

If you aren’t up on this whole thing, Ensign Broderick is a Toronto-based songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist whose musical persona was formed in the 70s, existed in secret for approximately one billion years, and burst on the scene in 2018 with five (!) full-length albums, a short film directed by auteur Guy Maddin, and international fashion, film and music coverage. This is all so bananas, and we are so happy to be a part of the whole thing.

Broderick makes old-school glam sound urgent, gritty, and absolutely vital.” – Uncut “Oh, you” – Six Shooter newsletter monkey

RIIT

Today is the perfect day to introduce you to Riit, a throat singer and songwriter from Panniqtuq, Nunavut. Have you noticed that this has kind of become our oeuvre? We are pretty into it. Riit is relatively new to southern listeners (you may have seen her at Interstellar Rodeo last year), and we are so excited to work with her. She released a 3- song EP in 2017, landed a bunch of award nominations including Best Radio Single and Pop Album of the Year (Indigenous Music Awards) and Indigenous Artist of the Year (WCMAs). Now, Riit is gearing up to release her debut full-length album, which we are thrilled will be out on Six Shooter. Stay tuned because the first new song is coming soon.

Riit just returned from a quick trip overseas, where she was the special guest performer in London, UK for Harry & Meghan (the best royals, let’s be frank) at Canadian Cultural Centre. Here’s your proof (also, our very own Matt Maw and Allison Outhit were in the room, they’ll back us up). And I would like to clear up that Harry doesn’t look super pissed off in that video, he just has resting Royal face. Oh yeah, after killing it for the Sussex Sweeties, Riit was off to play her first show in Paris, which sold out. OO-LA-LA!

I had a dream last night that Riit recorded a duet with the frontman from the Lemonheads, and at the end of the song it had this really nice part where it slows down ever so slightly. It was a perfect riitardando. Is that the worst pun I’ve ever made in this newsletter? Perhaps.

PARTY LIKE IT’S 1997: RHEOSTATICS’ DOUBLE LIVE COMING TO A STREAMING SERVICE NEAR YOU.

Six Shooter is pleased to announce that RheostaticsDouble Live album will soon be available on all streaming services worldwide for the first time. Originally released in 1997, the album(s) were recorded on the 1996 Trouble At The Henhouse tour with The Tragically Hip and at various venues across Canada, including Winnipeg’s West End Cultural Centre, Toronto’s Bathurst Theatre, Club Vertigo in Victoria and more. How many of these clubs are still going strong?

Double Live will be available on April 5, 2019. Get stoked. Go back in time with Michael Barclay’s Exclaim! timeline:

Double Live is released with low expectations, but becomes their second-biggest album and a touchstone for a new generation of fans. Says Bidini, "Double Live was the #1 campus radio record that year in Earshot, which freaked me out. Because, whatever, it was a live record sandwiched between albums. We didn't really do anything to promote it. We sold a lot; I think that and Melville are neck and neck. For whatever reason, that one registered." Improbable for aging Canadian cult heroes, the Rheostatics' audience starts to get younger. "I think it's just strong word of mouth, second wave," says Bidini. "We met these kids in London, Ontario, and the girl was 16. She said that her father used to play her the Whale Music soundtrack when she was 8 or 9 and that was the music she went to sleep to. I would be perfectly happy if we were playing to old people and the audience was still strong, but it's so much better that it's younger kids."
