A while ago I bought one of those zucchini noodler things, like a vegetable grater specifically for turning zucchinis into “noodles”. What can I say, I am a sucker for overly specific kitchen tools. Anyway, yesterday I thought I would be fancy and noodle some carrots with this thing for my salad. Instead I noodled my damn thumb! Not fancy! Now I have a bandaid on my thumb, which is very seriously hampering my ability to text / check Instagram / enjoy life to the fullest. Autumn sucks.
Tanya Tagaq Launches Split Tooth
Tanya Tagaq continues to take Six Shooter on the wildest of rides. Wild fun, not wild scary! Since we started working with her in 2013, she has won the Polaris Prize and a JUNO Award, has received two honourary doctorate degrees, been inducted into the Order of Canada, and now, with the release of her first ever book, has been long listed for the Giller Prize. Um, wow, what a trajectory! I haven’t done any of that stuff, and I’ve been working with Six Shooter since loooong before 2013. Double Doc Tagaq (as I have decided to call her for at least the remainder of this sentence) was also recently on the cover of NOW Magazine and the cover of the Toronto Life Stylebook, and you can read about her new book, Split Tooth, in The Globe and Mail here. Or, if you are short on time, you could just read her book instead of reading about her book and then subsequently reading her book. If you live in Calgary, sorry about your early winter, but hey, at least you have the opportunity to attend one of the very few book launches she is doing (see below for deets).
Whitehorse Announces The Northern South Vol. 2
Who’s Been Talkin’? We have! We conducted an interview with Drew Barrymore, and she can be directly quoted as saying, “I focus on nurturing my mind with the music of Whitehorse and also their small bodies”. Weird!
Hot off some very sick (as in “siiiiiick”, not as in “ew, sick”) performances at AmericanaFest in Nashville and at Reeperbahn in Hamburg, Whitehorse is taking their drummer on the road to do some drumming, since that is kinda what drummers are for mostly. Whitehorse plus drummer are hitting up select dates in Canada, including two shows in Whitehorse, YK. Whitehorse in Whitehorse! I wonder if the two Whitehorses will cancel each other out, and all we will hear is the silence of the tundra? Spooky.
Whitehorse is leading up to the release of the second volume of their blues tribute series The Northern South. How many of you guessed that this new collection is titled The Northern South Vol. 2? Very clever, you are. The first single “Who’s Been Talkin’” has already dropped (as us cool industry people say), and a new video is ready for your eyeballs to check out on Gretsch’s blog here.
If you’re a fan of Whitehorse (you must be if you are still reading this), guitars (you must be a fan of guitars if you are a fan of Whitehorse) or winning free things (specifically guitars), don’t miss the chance to enter to win a brand new Gretsch Billy Bo courtesy of the band. Check out the entry form here.
The Wet Secrets Unveil Brand New Video For "Give It To Me Straight"
The Wet Secrets also recently performed at Reeperbahn, wowing Germans left, right and centre. Germans are in general un-wowable, so this is an impressive feat indeed. Sure, you might get lucky and wow a German left, or maybe left and centre if you are really lucky, but left, right AND centre? Unthinkable. The Wet Secrets must really be quite a fine band with a sonic palette carefully honed for the German market. If you too, like the Germans, would like to be wowed in multiple directions, check out the sideways inifiscroller video for "Give It To Me Straight" right here.
Ensign Broderick's New Record BloodCrush Out This Fall
We just launched "Standing in My Light," a brand new song by Ensign Broderick. This is the lead-off song from his next album, BloodCrush, which will be the fifth dang album we’ve released by him this year! That’s like many artists’ whole discography in one year. Broderick? More like Broader Rickorded Catalogue! That sounded funnier when I said it out loud. Oh well. What a year it has been. We started 2018 off right by going to Winnipeg to participate in the excellent Winnipeg New Music Festival, which doubled as a wrap party for the film, ACCIDENCE. The short film directed by Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson in collaboration with Ensign Broderick has had such an amazing journey. Its world premiere was at the Berlin Film Festival and most recently it had its North American premiere at TIFF. Ensign Broderick also performed in Japan, at SXSW, and at JUNOFest in Vancouver, and finally to a mesmerized crowd in his hometown of Toronto where we celebrated the launch of his first four albums, one of which is nominated for the Record Store Day Vinyl Award. Phew, that is already quite the haul of stuff! But we might as well squeak one more in there, what’s living for? Next up is the aforementioned BloodCrush, produced by Grammy winner Malcolm Burn and to be released on November 9. Listen to "Standing In My Light" now.
The Dead South Voices In Your Head Tour On Sale Now
I’ve been saying for years how weird I think it is that the “doot doot doo” part in the Spin Doctors song "Two Princes" is identical to the “doot doot doo” part in Third Eye Blind’s "Semi Charmed Life." It was really bugging me yesterday so I fired up the ol’ YouTube machine to give both songs a listen again. To my surprise, "Two Princes" doesn’t even contain a “doot doot doo” section! It was all in my brain! It’s like that Berenstain Bears Mandela Effect thing, but with 90’s alt-rock!
Another band who has many songs that do not contain “doot doot doo” parts is The Dead South. The Dead South will be hitting the road starting Tuesday for a grand tour of North America. Ah yes, ye olde grand tour. It shall be grand, this tour. Grand as a canyon, grand as a prix, grand as a piano. Tickets are selling by the thousands for this grand tour, don’t miss out, grandpa! Same goes if you live overseas! Their 2019 UK tour is also going to be a biggie. The band is offering exclusive VIP Packages (sold separately from show tickets), check out the options here.
We’re off to Party City (how to become mayor plz?) to get balloons with the numbers 2, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0 - coincidentally the number of fans now following The Dead South and their adventures on Facebook. Blowing up balloons to celebrate The Dead South blowing up in popularity! Wahoo!
The Dead South filled their boots with heartbreak and side-eye this week. Tune in to watch their new video "Boots" here.
ANAANA'S TENT WITH RIIT
Riit, WCMA and Indigenous Music Award nominee, is also the host of APTN’s Anaana’s Tent, a new children’s show that launched earlier this year. The show airs in both Inuktitut and English and is attracting all sorts of national coverage. Based on Sesame Street, the show features Riit, animation, reaaally cute puppets and more, with plenty of appearances by musicians we know and love. Tune in! You might learn something!
INTERSTELLAR RODEO 2019 DATES REVEALED
Save the date! in 2019, Interstellar Rodeo will happen July 26-28...please note that this is one weekend later than it has been in the past couple of years. This will ensure that we skip any possibility of rain or thunder hampering our fun, riiiiight?
Did you rip it up at Interstellar Rodeo 2018? We sure did. With artists such as Feist, July Talk, The Mavericks, Courtney Barnett, A Tribe Called Red, our very own The Dead South, and approximately one kabillion others, Interstellar Rodeo was an unbelievably good time. Ok, in all honesty I have come to expect a rootin’ tootin’ fun weekend every year at Interstellar Rodeo, so I certainly find the end result to be quite believable (rather than unbelievable as previously stated). Thank you to all the artists, sponsors, volunteers, wacky thunderstorms, extra cool stage manager, and fans who made our seventh year the best one yet. We’d also like to humble-brag that we achieved both gender and cultural parity in our programming this year, and Indigenous artists comprised almost 40% of the line up.
