Hello everyone! Our regular newsletter writer, Nik Kozub, is on vacation in Rome, no doubt eating huge bowls of Tonnarelli Cacio e Pepe. So while this newsletter might be missing the usual Nik style zingers, we have plenty of delicious news to share.
SIX SHOOTER RECORDS RULES AT AMERICANAFEST 2017
Six Shooter will be out in full force at AmericanaFest in Nashville this week with artists Sam Outlaw, Whitney Rose and The Deep Dark Woods.
Our very own Sam Outlaw is nominated for Emerging Artist of the Year, and will be performing at the Americana Honors & Awards ceremony at the Ryman, as well as a showcase at Mercy Lounge (Wed, 11 PM) and the Country Music Hall of Fame (Thurs, 2:30 PM) at an event hosted by Mike Judge.
The Deep Dark Woods have returned with a new song called “Drifting On A Summer’s Night” ahead of some super exciting, somewhat secret news that a new album may be on its way. Check them out at the WMOT Yeehaw Tent at 3 pm on Saturday and/or for their official showcase at The Basement that same night at 10 pm.
Whitney Rose will also grace the stage at WMOT (Sat, 1 PM), as well as her official showcase at the Mercy Lounge on Saturday at 8 pm.
You can get a taste of all three artists, as well as a scrumptious lunch catered by Noshville, at our now legendary annual Outlaws and Gunslingers luncheon. We’re teaming up with our pals at Starfish Entertainment and new party partners Wide Open Country to do it up right on Thursday, Sept 14 from noon until 2 pm. This year’s venue is the American Legion Post 82. Free shuttles run from The Westin every 30 minutes starting at 11:15 am.
WHITNEY ROSE RULES WITH RULE 62
Whitney Rose is gearing up to release Rule 62, her upcoming full-length record (her second release of 2017!). We’ve already let loose a couple of songs from this excellent album into the world, and they have been enthusiastically received. Rolling Stone called "Can’t Stop Shakin'" a “country soul throwback", and Wide Open Country aptly described the song “Arizona” as a “blistering country kiss off.” Just last week, we released "Better to My Baby" — watch the video for it HERE.
The full album (street date: October 6) will fuel a new round of touring, including a whack of dates in Canada (two in Toronto, sensing a theme here) with The Mavericks in October in addition to her own headline USA tour in the fall. See TOUR DATES for more info.
TANYA TAGAQ RULES THE WORLD
So much is happening with Tanya Tagaq, we could dedicate an entire newsletter to her awesomeness. Like her recent trip to Ottawa where she was made a Member of the Order of Canada. And that she will perform at the Polaris Music Prize Gala on September 18th, as she is nominated this year for her critically-acclaimed album, Retribution. Psst - if you are headed to the gala this year and would like to be involved in a very special project, please email helen@sixshooterrecords.com.
Other major fall shows include a performance with Patti Smith and Cat Power for Climate Change at Carnegie Hall in NYC (Nov 5) and in Portland at PSU’s Lincoln Performance Hall (Sept 15).
Tanya has also made a new video for the song, "Sivulivinivut", which premiered with Indian Country Media Network. The song is a rare occasion of Tanya singing in Inuktitut, with a backdrop of northern lights. Watch the video HERE.
In other exciting news, Tanya will be performing a surprise show at Trinity-St. Paul on November 1 as part of a live taping for a documentary. Come to the show, be immortalized on film (i.e. please be aware this show will be taped). Tickets $30 + tax + fee. Tickets available HERE.
TORONTO RULES OUR WORLD
We are feeling pretty lucky, living in the “centre of the universe” and all that...not only can we dine out on some really good Spanish food, but we are super stoked to catch shows by many of our amazing artists this fall (some of them on the same night!).
Check it:
Sam Outlaw, Longboat Hall, Sept 25
Whitney Rose, Horseshoe Tavern, October 18 + Phoenix Concert Theatre w/ The Mavericks, November 3
Tanya Tagaq, Trinity-St. Paul, Nov 1 (please note that this show is a live taping for a documentary, and you may be captured on camera)
Amelia Curran, Gladstone Hotel, Nov 2
The Deep Dark Woods, Longboat Hall, Nov 3
Whitehorse, Massey Hall, Dec 8
Stay tuned for more fun Toronto announcements (lots of great things cooking over here!).
WHITEHORSE INDUCTS NEIL YOUNG
You know who else rules our world? Neil Young. Whitehorse was pretty stoked when the call came in last March asking them to help induct Neil Young to the Canadian Songwriter Hall of Fame. The celebration, which also will induct Bruce Cockburn, Beau Dommage, and Stéphane Venne, takes place on September 23 at Massey Hall. Whitehorse joins a gang of star-studded artists taking part in the fun, including Arkells, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Hawksley Workman, and k.d. lang.

WHITEHORSE TAKES PANTHER IN THE DOLLHOUSE ON THE ROAD
Most of your relationships are commodified...but when you add sex, people are so blinded by sex phobia that they can’t see. — Dan Savage
Whitehorse broke the mould in terms of what can be accomplished with an album launch party, inviting renowned advice columnist and podcaster Dan Savage, Supreme Court of Canada challenger Terri-Jean Bedford, sex worker Nikki Thomas, and Sunshine House founder Margaret Ormond for an evening of thought-provoking conversation and exceptional music. Watch our highlight reel HERE.
Now they’re taking their rock show on the road with a slew of dates this fall that takes them coast to coast in the USA and Canada. Lucky readers in Calgary can use discount code: Sixshooter for the next 3 days (Sept 12-15). See TOUR DATES for ticket details.
We’ve teamed up with our pals at Big Rock, who this summer created an exclusive wheat ale (with notes of coriander and orange!) just for Whitehorse, called Wit Horse. We're stoked to continue our love affair with Big Rock on our Canadian dates for our VIP Wheat and Greets, where you’ll also be treated to an intimate acoustic performance by Whitehorse, a signed CD and digital copy of Panther in the Dollhouse, and an exclusive VIP shirt. You might want to don said shirt as you pose with photos with Luke and Melissa. Limited tickets available HERE. (Please note that tickets to the actual concert are sold separately via the individual promoters).
AFICIONADA - EXCLUSIVE ARTIST MERCHANDISE ON OFFER
Welcome to Aficionada, our new e-commerce program that marries our love of music with our love of art to create beautiful works exclusively available through store.sixshooterrecords.com.
As Aficionada’s first Whitehorse-related offering, we are thrilled to partner with renowned editorial cartoonist David Parkins, who has created two exclusive illustrations printed on 11”x11” canvases, one for "Nighthawks" and one for Panther in the Dollhouse. Both will be available as bundles with CDs or LPs, available HERE.
Aficionada has already released an exclusive seal cuff made by Cheryl Fennell. Three new colours of lining are available, bundled with Tanya Tagaq’s acclaimed album Retribution, handcrafted exclusively for us in conjunction with the first ever National Seal Products Day.
Stay tuned for exclusive Deep Dark Woods’ kitchenware!
INTERSTELLAR RODEO HIGHLIGHTS
Now that we’re all back from Interstellar Rodeo, we’ve had a moment to reflect on how awesome both festivals were. We found out Beck has family based in Winnipeg. Some lucky festival goers caught a glimpse of Father John Misty strolling around the grounds. No one kicks out the jams better than the venerable Marty Stuart. We’re very proud of Whitney Rose and Ensign Broderick for playing memorable, well-received sets. We were transformed by Leonard Sumner in both cities, too. We loved that birthday girl Begonia donned a brilliant bold dress to match her incredible voice. We cheered on Kevin Drew as he helped move a tent in the rain to protect the console so that the show could go on. We marvelled at Ford Pier’s flair with the megaphone. We grooved with Aloe Blacc and his dance party tunnel. We’ll never forget the awesomeness of Broken Social Scene closing the festival against the dramatic prairie sky in Edmonton, and how they brought it again in Winnipeg. We adored how they kicked it up a notch by bringing our own Luke Doucet up on stage. John K Samson painted us some stirring images of our Canadian experience, and he was even the home of a dragonfly for a little while. Our hearts ballooned with every song played by the beautiful Rheostatics. Shakey Graves brought the rock and Yola Carter rules our world.
For those who missed out this year, next year’s dates are set at: Edmonton (July 20-22, 2018) and Winnipeg (Aug 10-12, 2018).
