Holy zoinkleberries! England is burning! Our sincerest sympathy goes out to those who have been affected by the awful rioting, and in particular to all the independent music labels and artists who have lost their stock to fire. Everyone needs to chiiiiill, summertime is for Mojitos (or Pimms lemonade), not rioting, jeez. Stop the madness and listen to Madness!

MELISSA + LUKE = WHITEHORSE

Six Shooter Records' Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet tie the musical knot with the debut of their new band, Whitehorse, marrying their talent and chemistry on stage as a smoldering duo. They already tied the knot in the smoochy way in real life, so this makes perfect sense! This kind of touring-musical-lovebirds dealio definitely reminds me of a classic Johnny and June type scenario, but without all the stuff in the movie where you are like "wow, Johnny is being such a dick to that other girl"... maybe Luke and Melissa are actually closer to the duo Laid Back and their hit song 'White Horse,’ although I do realize two German dudes making proto-techno might be a little off the mark for this project. Whitehorse’s debut recording will be released on August 30. See a fun preview for Whitehorse below.

Whitehorse are givin' 'er straight outta the gates, and will be playing a bunch of dates in the fall in Ontario, Quebec, and the USA. Also just announced is their Feb 24 concert at Winter Garden Theatre in Toronto. The last time we put a show on sale via the peeps at Massey Hall, it sold out almost instantly, so get your tickets right away. The public on-sale date is Aug 15 at http://roythomson.com.

The live show is really going to trample your turtle. Luke and Melissa have been working hard at it, and if you live in (or are willing to travel to Hamilton or Waterloo), you can participate in the process. They will be performing five "live rehearsals" at the Jane Bond and the Casbah. No cover charge, renegade punk stylez.

Pre-orders for the new Whitehorse recording are up for sale now.

RAVE REVIEWS FOR THE DEEP DARK WOODS

Praise for The Place I Left Behind, the new album from The Deep Dark Woods, is streaming in from coast to coast, kind of like a very long stream that spans coast to coast... a river if you will, but "rivering in from coast to coast" sounds weird. For a band identified for their "Saskatchewanness," with this new record The Deep Dark Woods have impressed far beyond their prairie origins (not to say "Saskatchewannitude" isn't impressive on its own), with slam dunk reviews swishing from every corner (assuming the hoops are set up in the corners of the proverbial music-press B-Ball court, y'know).

I think HeroHill nailed it with this little quote: "The Place I Left Behind exceeds even the highest of expectations and remarkably pays tribute to the sound that defines our country's musical heritage without sounding dated. There's a sadness that runs throughout the 13-song affair but the uplifting harmonies and warm organ work act as the perfect counterpoint. Basically, it's the type of record that ignores seasons and trends, for the simpler and much loftier ambition of timelessness." Yeppers, that's whazzup.

After a month of festival dates, the band will embark on a national tour, bringing them to many locales across the country, which, if you want me to break down our industry jargon for ya, is why we call it a national tour (see tour dates). Meanwhile, check out this little video we made (thanks to the guys at Plan 9 Films).

WAGONS SET TO RELEASE RUMBLE, SHAKE AND TUMBLE ON AUGUST 16

The title Rumble, Shake and Tumble effectively captures Wagons' rowdy roots-rock style, a Red, White and Blue palette of rock 'n' roll, country, cabaret, psychedelia and soul. That's the Australian Red, White, and Blue of course!

Rumble, Shake and Tumble, out August 16, bursts forth with massive open chord riffing in the Tom Petty-ish "Downlow." The swampy stompy of "I Blew It" then gives way to the dark country epic "Love is Burning" (better get that checked out fellas, pretty sure your love ain't supposed to burn). Wagons' gentler side shines in the cuss-laced-yet-tender "Moon Into Sun" and heartbreaking ballad "My Daydreams," which settles somewhere between Neil Young and Roy Orbison, and still rules even though it isn't quite as cuss-laced (I have to admit, I love a good cuss lacin'). There's a special place in Six Shooter's heart for second to last track "Life's Too Short" - a feel better ditty that sums it all up while steering clear of self-help terrain. Inspired by American icons old and new, and bearing Cormac McCarthy's harrowing Western gothic fingerprint, the record holds unexpected twists, turns and moods, punctuated throughout by Henry Wagons' grunts and snarls (and sangin' of course!).

See the video for "I Blew It" and live footage of "Willie Nelson" below.

And don't miss out on their Canadian tour dates:
VANCOUVER, BC: Railway Club, September 4
TORONTO, ON: Horseshoe Tavern, September 6
OTTAWA, ON: Zaphod's, September 7

THE BEAUTIES' FIRST EVER WESTERN TOUR

Y'know, I would definitely say that I have a pretty well non-existent sweet tooth. I am one of those assholes who says things like "this is good cake... it's not too sweeeeeet", and my idea of a midnight snack is a bit of spicey lime pickle and brie on a water cracker. That being said, I totally just craved, and subsequently smashed, a big bowl of soy ice cream with Nutella on it! I still know how to partaaaaaaay!

Hot off the busiest day in Beauties history, one that started with two Hillside shows...first with the Beauties' current touring mate Serena Ryder and then with Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew, and ending with five more sets at the band's home base, Toronto's Dakota Tavern... The Beauties fiiiinally pack up for their western Canadian debut this August. This has nothing to do with my eating habits, or dessert cravings, but I thought I'd keep you in the loop anyway, since I try to keep my Twitter account free of boring-ass food posts. Check below for the deets on The Beauties upcoming tour dates, and no deets on how I made a Saskatoon berry pie for the first time the other day.

For those in Western Canada who have yet to experience The Beauties' legendarily lively shows, here's a recap of that jam-packed Hillside day, courtesy of Spinner.

TRAMPLED BY TURTLES WILL TRAMPLE YOUR TURTLE

You may have noticed at the end of the Whitehorse segment of this newsletter above, that I am now replacing the phrase "blow your mind" with "trample your turtle" in my day-to-day lexicon. Ok, maybe you didn't notice until now, and you are about to scroll back up and re-read that part. Either way, this is big news. I like this new phrase for a few reasons, please allow me to run 'em down for you:

  1. I like the visual I get of my brain being a turtle. Kind of like in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon (the turtle part of TMNT just hit me now, ignore that part), where that bad dude Krang sits inside a robot body, only, of course, in this case it's a cute wrinkly turtle buddy, and he's inside my head, and he's always smiling with his cute little turtle mouth.

  2. I like how this expression can also be used for frustration or displeasure. Ie. "you know what really tramples my turtle?! TRAFFIC!!"

  3. Trampled By Turtles are totally a mind blowing (or rather turtle trampling) band, so alluding to them every time one's turtle is trampled JUST MAKES SENSE.

For example, 3000 lucky Newport Folk Festival goers recently had their collective turtles completely trampled by Trampled By Turtles. Standing ovations (or "standing Os" as I like to call 'em) and sing-alongs led to a rare festival stage encore, where TxT delivered their take on the Pixies "Where Is My Mind," which, while I'm sure it was intended as a rhetorical question, can easily be answered with "your turtle-y Pixie mind was just trampled!" NPR was there and caught all the magic. Hear the entire freakin' set here: http://www.npr.org/newport-folk-2011.

Canadian tour dates have just been announced.
See the frenzy for yourself at these fine establishments this fall:

LONDON, ON: Call The Office, November 9
TORONTO, ON: Horseshoe Tavern, November 10
OTTAWA, ON: Mavericks, November 11

JUSTIN RUTLEDGE IS A GOLDEN GREEK GOD

Hot off his acting debut in the Michael Ondaatje play based on his novel, Divisidero, and a more recent turn on an episode of Degrassi High (OMGGGGGGG), Justin Rutledge returns to the stage to star currently in the Canadian performance debut of Pulitzer Prize finalist Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice, a modern retelling of the ancient myth of Orpheus - from the dead bride's point of view. Justin will be playing the dead bride... Just kidding, he will be playing the hunky Greek dude in the toga. Eurydice plays Aug 4-13 at Theatre Passe Muraille Mainspace (15 Ryerson Ave, Toronto).

MARTIN TIELLI EXHIBIT AT GATE 403

Torontonians can stop by The Gate 403 (403 Roncesvalles Avenue) to check out recent art works by Martin Tielli. There might even be a catalogue available to purchase works, like last time. If you're interested, let me know, shauna@sixshooterrecords.com.
