NXNE Music Meeting
Like whoa!
Tour Dates (ie, Christine Fellows in Paris!)
Does this newsletter work the same way as Google? If I type in seasonal queries, will they be answered by you loyal readers? I need fairly immediate (like in the next ten minutes) answers to the following: Will I get Tetanus from BBQing on a rusty grill? Does asparagus make everyone's pee smell funny (not that I have funny smelling pee, just wondering)? What about BBQing asparagus on a rusty grill? How does summer work?! Halp!
JENN GRANT HAS THE JUNE BUG
Jenn Grant continues to tour steadily following the release of her deservingly celebrated album Honeymoon Punch. After wishing CBC Halifax's Information Morning a happy birthday (Yo! HBD!), Jenn will jetset around the country to perform at NXNE, two Ontario shows with Jim Bryson, Sled Island in Calgary, club dates in Vancouver, Victoria, and, well, a bunch more. Jenn is buuuusy! She is also playing a number of festivals this summer, such as the new River & Sky Festival in Sudbury, Wolfe Island, River Valley Arts Festival in New Brunswick. oh yeah, and she's also playing Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Canada Day for the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (who I actually prefer to refer to as the Baron and Baroness of Carrickfergus)! Hopefully they bring that kid who made the poopy face in all of their wedding photos, I love a good internet meme!
LUKE DOUCET GETS FESTIVE
Apparently chives are supposed to be annual, one time only type joints, but I'll be damned if those suckers don't just come back every year once you plant 'em. Ol' Luke Doucet is totally the chive in the vast garden of festival season. He just keeps coming back for more, and, uh he goes well with baked potatoes (sorry, I didn't really think through the chive analogy). What I'm getting at though, is Luke Doucet is a perennial festival favourite and this summer is no different. With his rocking' rock band, The White Falcon, in tow, Luke kicks it off this Saturday at the Burlington Sound of Music Festival, and then over to the Harbourfront Amphitheatre (now called the WestJet stage, by mere coincidence that has nothing to do with the airline WestJet other than them paying a speculated buttload of money to rename it, maybe) on Canada Day. Other festivals Luke is going to jam include Folk on the Rocks in Yellowknife, NWT, Canmore Folk Festival, Burnaby Roots & Blues Festival, Eaglewood Folk Festival, and capping off the summer with a rocking set at the Shelter Valley Folk Festival on Labour Day weekend. Holy festivoli! He will also be playing select club dates, including Wakefield, Calgary, and Edmonton (home of the longest stretch of public parkland in North America, which will be lovely for a running enthusiast such as Luke). Yay summer!
MELISSA McCLELLAND LOVES WATERMELON
Melissa McClelland is majorly hella thrilled to be playing the Winnipeg Folk Festival, kicking things off on a bill with Blue Rodeo and the Jayhawks. Maybe after the show, they can go to that bar where you throw a rubber chicken into a bucket - does that place still exist? Winnipeggers? For the remainder of the summer, Melissa will balance her time between Sarah McLachlan and Friends shows, Luke Doucet & the White Falcon shows, her own festival slots (Canmore Folk Festival, Eaglewood Folk Festival), running through sprinklers while eating a creamsicle, and eating half of a watermelon, then wearing the empty rind as a hat while she eats the second half. Yay summer!
HOLY MOLY! STOP THE PRESSES!
News flash! Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland will also be playing a duo show at the Glenn "don't rename me WestJet" Gould Theatre on September 21. Frazey Ford of the Be Good Tanyas rounds out the bill, and choreography will be non-existent (a plus in my mind). It's going to be an amazing show - tickets go on sale on Thursday at www.roythomson.com
TRAMPLED BY TURTLES TRAMPLE FESTIVAL CROWDS
Melissa isn't the only Six Shooter Artist to grace the Winnipeg Folk Festival stages. Our newest member of "the team" (that's what we call our team), Trampled by Turtles, who hail from Duluth, MN, is making their Canadian festival debut by lighting a proverbial fire (playing) under the proverbial asses (to a crowd) at the Winnipeg Folk Festival and the Ottawa Bluesfest. These guys rip it like a magic kiss, don't sleep! Also check out the scores of American festivals they are playing (Telluride, Newport, etc.) -- see tour dates.
THE BEAUTIES TRIPLE HEADER BRO
I know very, very little about sports, but I do know that if you play three games in a row it's a triple header, if you score three goals it's a hat-trick, and if you are super far away from the basket you get three points (hmmm, I may actually be a sports genius). The Beauties will qualify for all of these three/sports related accolades after this fiasco of a day (July 24th): Hillside Festival features Serena Ryder (awesome) and Kevin Drew (awesome), both who are using the Beauties as their back up band (aaaawwwwweeesoooome). When our dudes finish their set with Serena, they won't even need to pack up their gear... they can simply walk it over to the Island Stage (walking with gear! Fun!) and start rocking with Kevin. Then the whole gang will pack up and head back to Toronto, where they'll do a late night set, their third of the day, at the Dakota Tavern. We feel this day alone merits a nomination for the Hardest Working Band in Canada, aka HWBIC (but we rarely go for the acronym, 'cause it looks like the name of a bank or something). You can check out full sets by the Beauties at Mariposa and Ottawa Bluesfest this summer, as well on a few dates opening for the Drive By Truckers this week (yay them!!)!!! Check below for gory deets.
NQ ARBUCKLE KNOWN FOR BUCKLING ARRRRS
The Beauties aren't the only ones to be sharing the stage with the Drive By Truckers this week... ha ha ha, PSYCH! NQ Arbuckle also gets a chance to rock with their hallowed heroes this Saturday in Ottawa. Meanwhile, I'll be rocking out with a hallowed hero sandwich at home! Just kidding, I don't even know what a hero sandwich is really! Is it some kind of sub? Who can say?! Following that, NQ Arbuckle will be flinging themselves to Canadian destinations far and wide, including Huntsville (a ville known for its hunts), Wakefield (a field known for its wake), Winnipeg (a peg known for its wienies LOL), and Ear Falls (what?! I can't hear you!).
AMELIA CURRAN AND MANY 'M's: MARIPOSA, MUSIC, MISSION, MASSIVE
Our favourite Juno winner (aside from BIEBS), Amelia Curran, will be gracing many folk festival stages this summer, including the classic Mariposa Folk Festival, the raucous Dawson City Music Fesival (I'm going to be at that one too! Hey Amelia, let's paaartyyy!), the lovely Mission Folk Festival, and the massive Edmonton Folk Music Festival (hot tip: when they close the festival with 'Four Strong Winds', sing "strong foreskins" instead, and you'll get major larfs).
JUSTIN RUTLEDGE, BLUBBLBLBLBLBL!
Justin Rutledge and guest Jadea Kelly will be playing Hugh's Room on July 13. Get your tickets now! British Columbians will be able to check out Justin at the Salmon Arm festival. True story, whenever someone says Salmon Arm, I picture a big ol' floppy salmon arm, and I can't help but wave my arm around and go "blubblblbblbl"! See tour dates below.
MARTIN TIELLI VISUAL GARAGE SALE
We have no shows to announce, unfortunately, but Martin does want to let you know that he has some of his stunning paintings and illustrations for sale. Limited time offers are available until the end of June. As far as I know, the Canada Post strike hasn't hit Email yet, so fire one of those cyber jernts off to shauna@sixshooterrecords.com for a catalogue if you're interested in copping a Tielli original!
SHOUT OUT OUT OUT OUT WORK IT OUT
Our synthesizer loving Edmontonian pals Shout Out Out Out Out have been reclusively working on new material for the past little while, and will apparently have a new EP ready sometime this year! Vague, but exciting news! I'm sure you will be able to check out some of the new songs at their upcoming festival shows at Boonstock (Gibbons, AB), and the Dawson City Music Festival, where the Shoutset will be performing as well as hosting a workshop to de-mystify what all those blinking lights and knobs do on their massive mountain of electronic gear.
NXNE MUSIC MEETING / PASSING OF JUDGEMENT
After a successful debut last year, Six Shooter is pleased to bring back the Music Meeting to NXNE, which we've organized in cooperation with The Ministry of Tourism and Culture and CIMA. "FM USA - The Music Meeting" is a live event panel that features five US music directors from across the country. Simulating a radio music meeting, unreleased and new songs submitted from emerging and established artists will be played for the audience and panelists, and the songs will be given a score in real time. Each song will be discussed by the panelists like they would at a real radio station music meeting (except with less demoralizing cackles, CD throwing, and cursing). The Music Meeting panel will take place Thursday, June 16 @ The Hyatt (370 King St. W.), starting at 3:30 in the Regency Room. You have to be a NXNE delegate to attend.
