It's too bad this newsletter didn't come out last week, because then I could have made all kinds of hilarious jokes about Rebecca Black (especially if it had come out on Friday), but now it's been too long and the joke is kind of played out. Bummer deal hey? Oh well, yesterday was Wednesday, today is Thursday, tomorrow is Friday, something funny and meme worthy is bound to happen soon right?
COAST TO COAST JENN GRANT
I'm kinda dog crazy right now. I just watched a video on the internet of Billie Joe from Green Day jamming' on the piano with his pooch singing, and I just heard Mr. Showbiz Nick Cannon on the ol' satellite radio talking about how his wife (um, that would be Mariah Carey) is hiring a therapist for her multiple dogs to help them deal with the trauma of her being pregnant, and oddly, the snoopy factor was high enough in both cases that neither thing made me want to smash my computer or shoot a laser at the satellite responsible for distracting me with R&B gossip. Good work doggies!
Speaking of smashing, Jenn Grant's "Honeymoon Punch" continues to smash through brick walls like the Kool-Aid Man! Jenn Grant and her excellent band are prairie bound next week, with shows in Calgary, Canmore, the glorious mecca of Edmonton, Regina, and Winnipeg. Dapper Winnipegger Del Barber will be opening these shows. It's gonna be Del-icious! After partying across the perma-winter prairies with Dapper Del, Jenn heads back to her birthplace of Charlottetown to get down in style with all the fine folks rounded up there for the East Coast Music Awards. Even though Honeymoon Punch won't be eligible for ECMAs until next year (sniffle), Jenn is nonetheless nominated for three awards (yayee), including Best Video (for "You'll Go Far"), People's Choice Entertainer of the Year (better have a good speech prepared for that one), and Songwriter of the Year (with Buck 65 for "Paper Airplane"). Jenn is doing three shows, which I'm gonna go ahead and point out is equivalent to one show for each of the awards she is nominated for : one with her full band (which will make for a pretty good video, if it's filmed), one with the Symphony Nova Scotia ( very entertaining), and one as part of the Songwriter's Circle (Buck 65, whazaaaap). More east coast dates in Charlottetown and New Brunswick will take place the following weekend. See tour date deets below for all the deets on the dates, dudes.

If you live in London, Waterloo, Kingston, or Hamilton, then we have some good news for you! We're banging' out a killer concert series all up in yo neighborhoooood! We are offering a fantastic subscription price that also comes with the album of your choice from a participating artist. BEAUTIES ARE KILLING IT IN NYC
It's been a grueling but fun month for our boys, each week making the trek to New York City (that's the grueling part) to slay a crowd of music lovers (that's the fun part). Last week's show inspired an offer to play Battery Park with James Blood Ulmer and the Growlers, which left the fellas growling for blood, lemme tell ya! Who knows what's going to happen tonight (probably, at the very least, more eggplant slices from Rosario's pizza), but we know it's going to be epic, especially since Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew is confirmed as a special guest, as are Lisa Lobsinger and Americana legend Chip Taylor. On top of that, Justin Rutledge's side project, the Early Winters, opens the show. Whoa, that is a stacked bill! See you at Piano's!
Also coming up for the Beauties later in April is the Light of Day show in Pittsburgh... after blowing away a crowd of people in New Jersey, including the Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen(!), they've been invited back by the promoters to rock steel town. See tour dates for deets.
GOOD LOVELIES LET THE RAIN FALL AT THE GREAT HALL
With sell-out shows across the country celebrating the release of their new album, "Let the Rain Fall", The Good Lovelies are hosting a triumphant homecoming at the Great Hall in Toronto this Saturday. Please note, the show doesn't actually start until 8:45, not 8:30 as it is listed, so don't you be getting' all rowdy after 15 minutes. We know what a rambunctious lot you Good Lovelies fanatics can be, it's like Bieber fever without the therapeutic Twitter trending release. Anyway, the album (released on their own label) is killer. The rest of the world can enjoy the album starting April 4 (the digital world-wide release date), or buy their copies on May 9 (the physical world-wide release date, except for in the USA, which is May 24, even though we tried to tell 'em that hot tunes know no borders). To celebrate, the Good Lovelies will embark on their first ever tour of Australia in April, followed by their first-ever tour of the UK in May. They will assuredly take note of anomalies in the direction of water flow during toilet flushes between both tours (I have heard no conclusive evidence as to whether or not this phenomenon is a myth, and why would we Google it when the Good Lovelies can give us a first hand account?).
MELISSA + LUKE ON VINYL CAFE
Canada's favourite heartwarming radio storyteller, the CBC's Stuart MacLean, has invited Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet to join the Vinyl Cafe on a series of dates, mostly in the wild unknown of the USA. Just to prove that being a storyteller of this caliber is not easy, here is my attempt: "One day my boy came home with a new puppy, and it ate my whole collection of vintage science magazines and pissed on my best recycled paper cup, but then it started singing along to a Green Day song, and I just couldn't be mad, aw shucks! And now, here is a beautiful song about Hamilton by Melissa and Luke". See?!
This comes on the heels of a 48-date tour with Sarah McLachlan, who invited Melissa and Luke to be her friends and sing some of their own 'eve chunes during the show. Reviews across the board have been stellar, and we want to personally thank Ms. McLachlan for her generosity and graciousness. She is our New Goddess. So far, telling people that Sarah McLachlan is our New Goddess is going really well, people don't think that's a crazy thing to say out loud at all. Really and truly, Sarah is awesome, and she has been super duper awesome to our pals Melissa and Luke. The epic 48 date tour went smashingly, and everyone high-fived gently.
Also coming up for Luke and Melissa are shows in Ontario and a make-up show in Halifax where they will show you how to apply foundation and eyeliner and stuff. Just kidding, the make-up part has nothing to do with make-up. Check tour dates for all the details.
SXSW/JUNO WRAP UP
Coulda been the whiskey, or more likely, the tequila (or maaaybe the cookies). All we know is that the month of March is like New Year's Eve every night for the Canadian music industry. Austin is now a blur...we remember fantastic performances by our Femmes Fatales - Christine Fellows, Jenn Grant, Oh Susanna, Kendel Carson, Frazey Ford, and Jen Lane - all in exquisite form. And we once again had the best of times with our friends from XM The Verge, who recorded dozens of bands in our living room, dubbed the Six Shooter House of Sin. Check the first video to be released from this stupendous time (this one where City and Colour sings "Old Man" by Neil Young) below.
With barely a day to recover from SXSW, we launched right into Juno week in Toronto. Whatever, we are such seasoned vets that we didn't even flinch, we just took it like champs, put our heads down and partied through it. Luke Doucet dazzled the audience at Massey Hall during the Songwriter's Circle, making many new fans (including Randy friction' Bachman!). The Beauties won over the crowd at the Juno Welcome Reception, playing host to a number of nominees who performed covers of Canadian classics throughout the evening...our favourite of course was Justin Rutledge singing Arcade Fire's "Wake Up", our second favourite was Justin Bieber singing Anvil's "Metal On Metal".. just kidding, that didn't happen. We also managed to represent hard at various Juno Fest houses with performances by Justin Rutledge, Elliott BROOD, NQ Arbuckle, The Beauties, and Luke Doucet.
Best of all was Sunday night. Even though we didn't technically win either of our categories (once again, Luke was beaten by Neil Young, but hey, if you're going to let any rapscallion sneak one past ya, it may as well be by the Man Himself), we thought this was the best Juno Awards everrrrrr. The 40th Anniversary medley, on which Justin Rutledge performed with friends Jim Cuddy, Greg Keelor, the Sadies, Sarah Harmer, Sarah Slean, Dallas Green, Serena Ryder was, frankly, just amazing. Neil Young's speech inspired, and Arcade Fire's performance slayed (although we were really hoping that they would at least jump a VW minibus through a hoop of fire or something). All this sandwiched between two raucous trips on our ram-packed party bus (which was actually a VW minibus, that we did indeed jump through a hoop of fire with), which delivered our gang of 30 to the red carpet, because we are so damn fancy, and red carpets are totally normal for us. Special thanks to Blue Rodeo, who welcomed us to their now legendary post-Juno party at their amazing studio where we laid down some hot tracks for a new song called "Juno Ballin", where da red carpetz at? (Remix)'.
