I think it is possible that I look really stupid wearing shorts. How unfortunate in these hot summer months, especially in light of the new development in which I, unwilling to accept that I may possibly look really stupid wearing shorts, just cut off a pair of my favorite jeans only to realize that I possibly look really stupid wearing shorts. Oopsies!
MAKE A MEAL OF IT: HAWKSLEY WORKMAN FOLLOWS MEAT WITH MILK, OUT AUGUST 10, 2010
Anytime Hawksley goes into the studio, it seems that he emerges with two albums and a ripping (yet manly) stench. In 2008, he released Between the Beautifuls and Los Manlicious. He’s also given us a number of other less-discovered treasures that have been quietly released to fans alongside his major releases... these include Toothless Beauties, Puppy, and When We Were Security Guards. Geez, dude is prolific! 2010 is no different. He released Meat in January, which earned 4-star reviews across the board and a spot on the Polaris Prize Long List. Throughout the hubbub surrounding the release of Meat and the tours of Canada and Europe which accompanied it, he has also been releasing songs from Meat's Euro-pop cousin, Milk. The two were released as a double album in Europe, and both albums are now available separately on vinyl, featuring decidedly lewd artwork by Shout Out Out Out Out's Willie Dieminzz.
Now, finally, we are releasing Milk in Canada on a little format that we like to call the compact disc (it's kind of like a smaller version of a Laser Disc), which hits the stores on August 10. In Milk, the darker dance demons that lurk in Hawksley Workman come to the surface in an album that wraps most of the seven deadly sins in synth-soaked dance pop packages tailor-made for 80s runaways (Wayne Gretzky included). The album features collaborations with Tosha Dash (Candy Coated Killahz), Ali Shaheed Muhammed (A Tribe Called Quest) and Polaris Short Listed artist Shad, who makes a cameo appearance on the track Some People. This Canadian version of Milk also includes the radio singles Not Your Parents' Music (which was also featured in a Virgin Mobile campaign on MuchMusic) and Chemical (which has been added into heavy rotation on Toronto's KISS-FM, as well as a number of other hit stations across the country).
To celebrate the release of Milk, Hawksley will be performing a free concert at the edgiest of all venues, Chapters at Richmond/John St. in Toronto, on August 13 @ 7pm. There are no other Toronto dates announced at this time, so Toronto fans should not miss this!
In addition to the Chapters concert, Ontario fans should also check out Rootstock 2010, which is a songwriter circle at the Jackson Triggs Amphitheatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake, with Steven Page, Joel Plaskett, and Sarah Slean. It's gonna be rootin' tootin'! Ticket info is listed in the Tour Dates section.
Our latest Hawksley Workman video comes complements of celebrated animator, Chris Hinton. His film Blackfly directed for the NFB in 1991 received a nomination for an Academy Award, as did his film Nibbles, (2003) produced by Acme Filmworks. He has directed many films for the NFB, and we were delighted that he agreed to create an animated video for Hawksley's song, Tokyo Bicycle. The video was debuted on the wonderful CBC Radio 3. Watch it/read about it here - http://radio3.cbc.ca.
Phew! Hawksley Workman? More like Hawksley Busyguy!
READY, DOUCET, GO.
Okay, listen up. Luke Doucet's new album 'Steel City Trawler' is so freakin' awesome that it makes me want to pick that lil' guy up on my shoulders, parade him around for awhile, and then take him over to a full length mirror so that he can flash himself. Luke has made a simply stunning rock n' roll record, with all the looseness, swagger, and brilliant songwriting that makes for a classic. We are oh so very excited about this one. It's as if Luke has taken things back to his days playing in Veal, added his overwhelmingly dense experiences of touring, songwriting, and simply living (with all of the good and bad that goes with it), and then further honed the album into its own identity with the help of Sloan's Andrew Scott in the producer's role (as well as the off-the-rails rhythm section role). To top it all off, Luke enlisted legendary comic book artist David Collier to help create a vivid and moving visual representation of the themes and lyrics of the album for the artwork. I am seriously hella stoked on this whole thing.
If you would like a little sneaksy peaksy, check out this teaser behind-the-scenes video (directed by Scott Kaija and Ryan Gassi), which offers insight into the record, from Luke's take on why Hamilton is such an attractive place to settle (hint: it has everything to do with Winnipeg), interviews with Andrew Scott and David Collier, a few shots of Luke's creepy nosferatu fingernails, and intimate acoustic snippets of songs. Hear Some of You Folks, which Luke describes as an experiment in "shared uncomfortable intimacy," Hey Now, which tells a story of unease with announcing one's intentions to the world, and Magpie, a rock-style ballad a la Dust in the Wind, a song that lets the sounds of a city in to create a sense of solid ground in its otherwise atmospheric feel.
Sometimes I like to pretend that the "lead guitar player" in this video from Winnipeg Public Access TV in 1992 is actually a young Luke: www.youtube.com. I mean, he does rip a pretty serious face melter at about 1:40, and Luke IS from Winnipeg. Could be?
Steel City Trawler will be released on Six Shooter Records on August 31, 2010. I'll try to think of a good drinking game to play while listening to it by then.
PEOPLE LOVE THE PANTS OFF JUSTIN RUTLEDGE
Now in its 4th month of release, The Early Widows continues to win the hearts of fans and the 4-stars of the critics alike. I've seen tons of cool quotes that are all "oh mah gawd, this dude is like the sweetest songwritin' dude evaaaaar" (I'm paraphrasing a little). Justin has just announced the western leg of his national tour this fall. Like every touring musician, Justin has to put on his touring pants one western leg at a time... HAW HAW HAW! Labelmate Jenn Grant will join him on the tour, and they will surely discuss such matters as the quality level of their deli trays, the responsiveness of the crowd, how annoying that one guy who talked loudly through the whole set was, and possibly how much it hurt that time when someone in the band threw a radish directly at one of their ears at a gig in Waterloo. Tickets for most shows are available through http://www.sixshooterrecords.com . We are paperless (so no mailing fees... plus it’s better for the environment) for General Admission shows, and we have an arrangement with the promoter which allows you to enter 15 minutes before other ticket buyers to pick your favourite spot with a smug look on your face. In seated venues we are able to offer the best spots in the house.
ROYAL WOOD ON TOUR
No more waiting! Royal Wood has announced a national tour to promote his new album on Maple Music Recordings, The Waiting, which will take him from coast to coast. Hot off the David Gray tour in May, and fresh from a pile of summer festivals, Royal is excited to bring you his full length concert which fully features all the beauty new songs from his acclaimed new record. Indie rock goddess Hannah Georgas joins Royal on most of the dates. See below for all the info. Also watch for a new video from Royal, for the song, Do You Recall, which is going to be filmed in Iceland. Wowsa!
THE BEAUTIES: HILLSIDES AND HORSESHOES, OUTLAWS AND GUNSLINGERS
As predicted, The Beauties blew the roof off of the Island Stage at Hillside this year and are rarin' for more. If you don't live in Ontario, and have no idea what Hillside is, it's a bitchin' music festival in Guelph that people love so much that it gives them lyme disease (sometimes). Killin' it at that festival is kind of equivalent to giving all of Ontario a giant high five, kind of like how talking about Hillside and assuming that the entire country (and wherever else this silly newsletter thing is sent) knows what it is, is kind of like that scene in the movie 'Summer School' (one of my faves, btw) where Kirstie Alley is demonstrating to the class that she understands the intricacies of making rude hand gestures. For Toronto based Beauties fans who are pining for the good old Sunday residency gigs, we've got a two night stand lined up for ya, except this time it's Friday and Saturday night, Sept 17/18, at... the Horseshoe Tavern! Psych!
The love affair between the Beauties and Six Shooter continues, and we are stoked to be able to present this killer band in Nashville, TN, on September 9 at the Basement as part of the Americana Music conference. For those of you in attendance, don't miss our annual Outlaws and Gunslingers luncheon co-hosted with Starfish Entertainment, where the Beauties will also rock the noon hour away on Sept 10. Justin Rutledge will also be there! We love him too! We like to have long meetings with him in which we discuss what kind of barstool is the most sturdy when trying to rile up a crowd into some audience participation and such!
CMT also loves The Beauties. Tune in on Aug 30 to watch The Dakota Sessions, one with the Avett Brothers and the other with The Beauties. Check local listings. In other CMT news, they have licensed the song, Fashion Blues by the Beauties as the theme song for their new TV show called the Fashion District, debuting November 10.
GOOD LOVELIES RECORD AND TOUR. WE LIKE THIS.
The Good Lovelies are headed into the studio this month with producers Les Cooper and Adam King, the winning team that helped them create their Juno Award-winning debut (which, incidentally, will be available in stores for the first time through Warner on September 28). The girls have a very busy fall schedule that will see them gracing Canadian stages from coast to coast. Stay tuned for details. Meanwhile, those living in the same neck of the woods as Midland, ON, can quench their Good Lovelies thirst on Aug 25. See Tour Dates for ticket details.
SHOUT OUT OUT OUT OUT RETURN TO JERSEY SHORE
Did you watch episode 2 of MTV's Jersey Shore?! Did you happen to catch a couple seconds worth of Shout Out Out Out Out's 'Procrastinator's Fight Song' while the girls go shopping?! This is actually the 2nd time that 'Procrastinator's Fight Song' has been featured on the television masterpiece that is Jersey Shore, the first time being in the debut season when the klassy gang of roomies heads to Atlantic city, and Snooki wipes out while dancing on a sofa! This time around, the Jersey Shorers are vacationing in Miami, which is appropriate since we have recently noticed that, according to the reliable statistics provided by Myspace (an appropriate way to check statistics while discussing Jersey Shore) Shout Out Out Out Out have a disproportionately high number of fans located in Florida. Who knew?! WE DID, BECAUSE WE HAVE OUR FINGER ON THE PULSE BRO, AND THAT'S A SITUATION RIGHT THERE! You should check out the Shoutset's website post about their most recent Jersey Shore feature here www.shoutoutoutoutout.com for no reason other than to see a heelarious picture of Mike "The Situation" with synthesizer abs.
BLOG BLOG BLOG BLOG BLOG
Both Melissa McClelland and Amelia Curran are contributing bloggers at the Canadian Interviews Publishing site. Search for them here: www.canadianinterviews.com. And speaking of Amelia, please check below for a schwack of dates and stay tuned for another schwack of dates, to be announced shortly.
In other related news, "blog" is still a very funny word to me. Whenever I hear or read the word blog, I can't stop myself from saying it over and over in my head like "bloggity blogitty blog. Blog blog blog blog blog. Blogger. Bloggertown. Bloggity bloggertown. Baaaalog. Baaaloggers. Blog blog bloggy blogÉ blogger". I also hate the word tastemaker, I find it demeaning to humanity. I bring this up only because the chalkboard-nail-scratching word "tastemaker", is often followed by the hilarious word "blog". Word association! Hey, let's do a contest. Give me your best word association word for the word "blog." We'll send the winner a Six Shooter t-shirt in the colour/size of your choice.
VINYL STILL RULZ
Oh man, do I ever love vinyl. Sure, it is a pain in the ass to move when you have shelves full of black gold (did I really just call records "black gold"? Barf!), but there is certainly something irreplaceable about the experience of buying something so tangible and kinetic, with big artwork and the physical aspect of a needle bumping along in a groove. I'm kind of a bit of a sniffer too, I admit it, and new vinyl just smells so good. Of course, this doe eyed adoration of records means that I am extra stoked to say that we now have a bunch of new vinyl available!
First up, we have a Hawksley Workman 7" of Not Your Parents' Music and Where Do All The Dead Birds Go? These are available exclusively through www.sixshooterrecords.com for the next month, and then will be available in stores. See what we did there? We're totally messin' with the kids' minds man! Usually you find things digitally on the internet first, and then the physical product in the stores after, but we are changing the game here and putting the wax on our website first! Pioneer status bros! We also have Jenn Grant's LP, Echoes, which was fully recorded and mixed on analog equipment at Puck's Farm (vinyl being the next logical step in the direction of warm analog goodness), and Luke Doucet's LP, Blood's Too Rich, available through our webstore in the glorious 12" format. All of our vinyl releases include compact discs inside the package so you can fully enjoy the music any way you want. Or, you know, import that shizz for mobile convenience, bump the wax at home, and use the silver thing as a coaster. Oh you wacky music consumers, always keeping us record makin' types on our toes, and winding up back at the beginning! We love you!
