--Six Shooter Bullets --

May 2010, Vol. 07, No. 04

wait a minute, I just remembered who I am

  1. The Beauties release beauty debut album

  2. Royal Wood launches royal new album

  3. Justin Rutledge slays fans/press/tough exteriors with new album

  4. Hawksley Workman and Amelia Curran pay tribute to Bruce Cockburn

  5. New Hawksley Workman song/video out now

  6. Luke Doucet writes about Ian Curtis

  7. Outlaws & Gunslingers redux at NXNE

  8. Six Shooter teams up with Starfish Entertainment to present great NXNE panels

  9. Kevin Hearn Art show at the AGO

I kinda want to complain about assorted TV season finales here, but y'know, who cares?! I feel about as non committal to network television as a network television writer must feel while deliberately placing a multi-denominational, stained glass window in an eye-rolling cast hugging scene.

THE BEAUTIES RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM

We are just days away from the release date of the new Beauties' album, and we are like majorly hella stoked. And so are the newspapers (aka the original gangstas in this iPad bizarro world) - check out articles on the Beauties in the upcoming issues of Now Magazine, Eye Weekly, the Toronto Star, Chart, and Exclaim! Magazine. Just to prove that print media is the bee's knees, grab yourself some Silly Putty, and roll yourself out an analog copy of these wonderful reviews that you can read in a mirror! That's how we made fun in my childhood years, and I turned out okay-ish. This sweet-ass record kicks off with the jauntily snide opening track "Fashion Blues", and then continues on a rollercoaster of emotions/sobriety, from the drunken carousing on "Devil Do" to the raspy and fragile solemnity that echoes in "Heart of Stone". The Beauties handily manage to bash through ten tracks that capture their raw live energy, part 70s era rock, part bluesy strut, that makes your forget that Monday morning is just around the corner, and then makes your forget that it is Monday, and then makes you not care when you realize that it IS Monday. This album is Garfield proof! Lucky music fans in Toronto will be able to catch the Beauties at the Horseshoe Tavern on Saturday, May 29. Supporting acts are Amurrican rockers Marah, and Toronto's own New Country Rehab. It will be a night of epic chiefinosity. Get your tickets at http://www.sixshooterrecords.com. Those residing in London, ON, and Waterloo, ON, will also get first dibs on the live goodness that is the Beauties. Check tour dates. More shows to be added soon!

NO MORE WAITING FOR ROYAL WOOD

The David Gray tour is transgressing in a most tubular fashion for Royal - people have been going kookoo bananaz over how awesome he is, snapping up his newest album, "The Waiting", in droves. They might be getting in on the early scoopsies at the shows, but not to worry, the CD is now available in stores across the country. For avid Royal fans in Toronto, we are hosting a media launch for Royal's album on release day, and there are a limited number of VIP packages available (www.maplemusic.com). Or you could try your luck with a contest run by our friends at the awesome blog, NxEW. Go here: www.nxew.ca. Or you can wait until the fall, when Royal plans to putt along across the nation on a national tour... more details to come soon!

EARLY WORD ON THE EARLY WIDOWS

The press have raved like never before about Justin Rutledge's new album, "The Early Widows." I would say that a plethora of music journalists seem quite pleased with Justin's handiwork on this one, and were possibly even quite moved by said handiwork, perhaps even to tears (this is speculative, but at the very least imaginable). From the first review that appeared in the blog, Herohill, through to the fine folks at Exclaim, the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, all the Canwest papers, and more, the reviews are glowing indeed, proclaiming "The Early Widows" to be Justin's best work to date. Frankly, we love all of Justin's 'eavy chunes, but we will concede that this album is decidedly bitchin'. His sold-out album release party at Lee's Palace knocked our socks off (it's cool, it was laundry day anyway). Lots more dates are in the works - check the tour dates section for more info, and please note the new venue in Montreal.

Justin will be mounting a mighty iron steed (or steel, or whatever a tour van is made of... what, do I look like, some kinda genius?) for a national tour in the fall. Until then, please enjoy Justin on-line:

CANADIAN SONGBOOK

One of Luminato's most popular events each year is the Canadian Songbook, presented at Massey Hall. This year, the festival honours Bruce Cockburn, who has been giving us great music for 40 years. 40 freakin' years! Did they even have a facebooks or an ipods back then?! With no way to download playlists of trees falling in forests, how did anybody hear? Hawksley Workman was the first on board to pay tribute... fans of Hawksley know what a huge influence Bruce was on him. Six Shooterer and recent Juno winner Amelia Curran is joining in on the much deserved tribute as well. It's going to be a great night. Ticket info and more details can be gleaned here: www.luminato.com.

NEW HAWKSLEY WORKMAN VIDEO

Check out Hawksley Workman's new video for the song, "Not Your Parents' Music", which is now available through iTunes. What? With all that touring and producing, how did he have time to shoot a video? Well, the truth is, he didn't! HAHAHAHA PSYCH!!! Instead we hired the multi-talented Jeremy Fisher to create a video for him. A walking you-tube meme in his own right, Jeremy created a puppet of Hawksley and made him spazz out. Check the link here: www.youtube.com

"Not Your Parents' Music" will be added to the Canadian version of the album, "Milk", which will be released this summer.

Also available on iTunes is a "clean" (sans swearing) version of "Warhol's Portrait of Gretzky".

NEW LUKE DOUCET SONG

In "The Ballad of Ian Curtis", Luke Doucet dissects and reassembles elements of classic 80s Brit rock as requiem and homage to mopey mopester Ian Curtis (Joy Division), while also featuring vocals unexpectedly reminiscent of Curtis' successor, Bernard Summer (New Order). True story, one of my favorite records of ALL TIME is New Order's 'Power, Corruption, and Lies', but I digress, as this has little to do with Luke's radical song about poor ol' Ian Curtis. On this brand spanking new Luke jam, undercurrents of melancholic melody are buoyed by catchy, effortless piano, drum and bass arrangements steered by Canadian rock stalwart Andrew Scott (Sloan). The new track is now streaming at www.lukedoucet.com, and for sale on iTunes and at www.sixshooterrecords.com. And yes, this means we have a new Luke Doucet album coming soon. About time! Man, I am very strongly planted in the "highly anticipating" camp on this one... well, really, I'm also strongly planted in the upper echelons of the Six Shooter pyramid scheme, so I've already been privy to the whole album, but lemme tell ya, it is gonna be worth the wait for the rest of you! Stay tuned! (that's a guitar joke, 'cause Luke is like a total guitar wizard dude).

OUTLAWS & GUNSLINGERS

The Outlaws & Gunslingers team (Six Shooter Records and Starfish Entertainment) is saddling up for another stellar NXNE showcase at Lee's Palace. Last year's show packed a triple punch, with three 'in the round'-style offerings from Six Shooter and Starfish stables. This year is shaping up to be another remarkable night, with the added bonus of a number of musical friends in the mix, including Andy Kim, Simone Felice (Felice Brothers) and Colleen Brown, who will join the Six Shooter/Starfish cast of characters Jim Cuddy, Hawksley Workman, Justin Rutledge, Oh Susanna, Andy Maize, Amelia Curran, Royal Wood and more. Joel Stewart & The Future Hall of Famers will close the night. Ok, lemme add that up... that would make it at least an eleventuple punch! Is eleventuple the right word? I kinda made it up. In any case, a punch made up of so many strong artists will certainly be as potent and delirium inducing as the bizarre cocktails that many graduating high school students will likely ingest at "safe grad" in a field somewhere, chaperoned by the "cool parents", who are still probably, like, SO embarrassing.

THE LINEUP:
8pm - Andy Kim - CD Release Party
9pm - Justin Rutledge, Oh Susanna, Simone Felice
10pm - Andy Maize, Amelia Curran, Royal Wood
11pm - Jim Cuddy, Hawksley Workman, Colleen Brown
12pm - SURPRISE GUEST
1am - Joel Stewart & The Future Hall of Famers

Outlaws & Gunslingers take the stage on Thursday, June 17, 2010 @ Lee's Palace. The midnight slot will feature a surprise guest, to be announced on June 1, 2010. Stay tuned for more details! Admission is free with a NXNE wristband (first come, first served), and tickets will also be available at the door.

ALERT! MUSIC BIZ TYPES PAY HEED:

Six Shooter and Starfish Entertainment are also going to flex our smarts and highly experienced opinions, on musical hooha and such, at a couple of NXNE panels this year. Get learned good!

"FM USA" - The NXNE Music Meeting
Presented by the OMDC
THURSDAY, JUNE 17
HYATT REGENCY - REGENCY C
2:30 - 4 pm

While radio formats in Canada are narrow, and only certain types of music get airplay, the US radio landscape is much more diverse. In particular, AAA and Non-Comm formats are those in which Canadians generally excel in, though ironically, Canada itself has only a handful of stations across the country in this format. Bruce Cockburn, Alanis Morissette, Barenaked Ladies, Sarah McLachlan, Sarah Harmer, Kathleen Edwards, and many more all got their start on radio in the AAA format, and then crossed over to other formats in the USA and eventually onto commercial radio in Canada.

The Music Meeting will offer insight into the inner workings of some of America's most influential radio programs. Learn to pitch more effectively by learning what those at the top of the radio game look for in a song. Listen to new music alongside the experts and hear what works and why.

Moderator: Sean Coakley, Songlines

Panelists:
Rita Houston, WFUV (New York City)
Jim McGuinn, KCMP/The Current (Minneapolis)
Kevin Cole, KEXP (Seattle)
Kim Czornij, WUIN (North Carolina)

Admission to both panels is free with a NXNE delegate badge. Tickets will also be available at the door
