As I emerge from a fortress of crumpled receipts, I was going to mention something here about how much I hate doing taxes, but then I realized that it wouldn't be much different than someone stating "man, I hate the smell of farts!". It kind of doesn't need to be said, we all know that taxes stink.

JUSTIN RUTLEDGE'S THE EARLY WIDOWS: GET YOURS TODAY.

It's been a buck wild week around here with the release of Justin Rutledge's new album, The Early Widows. The press has been going bananaz! It's left us with no time to eat bananas! Accolade-induced potassium deficiencies abound! Sweet, rave reviews coming in across the country, with swishy four star reviews from the national publications (and that's outta four, not ten!). Yayee! We know that you are going to love Justin's bitchin' new jams, but if you want to listen before you buy, check out some of the new tracks on the Radio 3 website: http://radio3.cbc.ca/ . Be a Man will blow your effin' mind. It makes you want to turn your stereo all the way up to four (out of four of course).

Those of you lucky enough to be in Toronto on Saturday night (May 8th) can check out a full band (doublde drummers and all) presentation of the album at Lee's Palace (hurry up and get tickets, as there are precious few left). Doug Paisley and band opens, as does our Juno Award Winning pal Amelia Curran (more on her below), who opens the show at 9:30... make sure you're on time. Most importantly, bring a donation of a used book to help raise money and awareness for Toronto Public Library literacy programs.

If you aren't in Toronto this weekend, not to worry, there are lots more tour dates to come, with appearances throughout Ontario, in the USA in May with Amelia Curran, in June with Blue Rodeo, and a national tour coming in the fall. Get your Justin fix! Check the tour dates section for more information.

HAWKSLEY WORKS HARD MAN

Hawksley Workman wrapped up his Canadian tour on April 24 with a triumphant Massey Hall show. Then without even taking a single day off, he headed into the studio with the brilliant Jeremy Fisher to make what is sure to be an absolutely deadly album. I can say this with some certainty, since I was the one who somehow ended up with the job of moving the gear into the studio. If the girth of the gear is any indication, this album is going to be large and heavy. I hope for all of your sake that you don't have to listen to it while going up several flights of stairs. During my stint on roadie duty, I was privy to the Hawk's inclusion of two timpani drums and a bass drum in the studio setup. Do you have any idea how big a timpani road case is? Five or six people could easily have cocktails in one of those things, which would certainly be more fun than carrying said case. Needless to say, this record is going to sound as great as 2001 space odysseys. Like dude.

Then, again without taking a single day off (clearly there is a reason why he is named Workman), Hawksley goes direct from the studio to Europe, where he will do a whole pile of press and radio, plus bang out some rad dates in London, Paris, Amsterdam, and other fancy places like that. Get your tickets now www.hawksleyworkman.com. Meat/Milk is now available throughout Europe (sold there as a double album).

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WE ARE FLOATING IN THE BEAUTIES

On June 1, 2010, Toronto's own band of insiders The Beauties will release their debut record on Six Shooter Records. Man, it feels like we've been waiting forevurrrr to be able to say that. The Beauties have been the secret password on the lips of Toronto's secret society of the musically involved (T.S.S.O.T.M.I.) since the beginning of their notoriously raucous Sunday-night residency at The Dakota Tavern, Toronto's inner sanctum of roots rock venues (T.I.S.O.R.R.V.). Produced by Martin Kinack (the sweet dude who also produced Sarah Harmer, Broken Social Scene, Hayden, like whoa dude, nice CV man), The Beauties self-titled debut now puts the band on the national stage. The album, "motivated and energized" by Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew, will surprise those who know The Beauties by their live show, and will impress those who haven't yet seen the Sunday spectacle. The Beauties went into the studio for the first time late last fall, and came out with a debut record that puts their best feet forward... straight into ya earholes!

The official celebration of the release takes place at the Horseshoe Tavern on Saturday, May 29. Support acts are USA-based Marah, and Toronto's own New Country Rehab. It's going to be a totally chiefin' night. Get your tickets at www.sixshooterrecords.

ROYAL WOOD GETS ON TOP OF YOUR LOVE

Hot off the heels of two sold out shows at the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, and fresh from the set of his steamy video for On Top of Your Love, Royal jets off to BC next week to get on top of David Gray's love... of national touring. Uh what? Yeah, I mean that Royal is hitting the road with ol' Davey boy! His much awaited disc, aptly called The Waiting, coming out on Maple Music Recordings, will be available for sale at the shows and on-line. The retail street date is June 1st. We'll be doing a press launch at the Gladstone in Toronto that day. There are a very small number of of VIP ticket packages available for this performance. Since you are surely VI, check www.maplemusic.com for the details.

AMELIA CURRAN JUNO WINNO!!!

Six Shooter is tickled to have its first Juno Award, brought to us by one of our newest artists, Amelia Curran!!! We've had Juno Nomos before, but this is our first Juno Winno! Amelia might be one of our newest artists, but she has one of the oldest souls, kinda like one of those babies that looks like an old man (except of course, Amelia doesn't look like an old man nor does she act like a wee baby). If you haven't checked out her beautifully penned songs yet, get your copy of Hunter, Hunter. She is a writer of the highest order. Juno what I'm sayin?! Congratulations, Amelia!

Amelia has been traveling western Canada with fellow Maritimer, Rose Cousins, on a sold out tour. She joins the bill of Justin Rutledge's show in Toronto this Saturday, then the two of them are southbound to do a number of USA shows. Booyakasha.

SHOUT OUT OUT OUT OUT GET EYJAFJALLAJOKULL'D

Our analog synth-obsessed Edmontonian pals, Shout Out Out Out Out spent a couple weeks touring the UK and Europe last month, in support of the impending European release of their densely awesome opus Reintegration Time, due to hit shelves on that side of the pond on May 17th. Visit their recently revamped website at www.shoutoutoutoutout.com to view their ongoing series of hilarious tour videos to get an accurate idea of what life on the road with the Shoutset is like. All of their European video blogs are now up on the site. You can even watch Shout Out Out Out Out get stuck in Amsterdam for 5 days due to that total ash-hole of a volcano, Eyjafjallajokull!
