KEVIN HEARN RELEASES HAVANA WINTER
Barenaked Ladies' Kevin Hearn and Thin Buckle announce the release of new album - Havana Winter - out yesterday (in Canada and July 28 in the USA) on Hearn's own label Celery Music. Personally, I can't wait to fill this sucker with peanut butter, throw some raisins on there and chow down on this auditory delight. That was a celery joke by the way, just in case I'm moving too fast for ya. Produced by longtime friend/collaborator Michael Phillip Wojewoda, the album features a plethora of mind blowing guests, including musical luminaries Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Chantal Kreviazuk, and others. The music continues in the progression of Hearn's "planetarium pop" with the use of lush synthesizers (lush as in dense foliage, not as in perpetually drunk) decorating increasingly spacious arrangements. Yep, that's right, both lush and spacious... it's a mind melter! Remember in the Rick Moranis classic Honey I Shrunk The Kids, when the "kids" get "shrunk" and they are walking through a virtual forest made up of blades of grass? That's kind of both lush and spacious, innit? Havana Winter is an old-fashioned headphone album, the kind where it's best to sit back, close your eyes, and immerse yourself in a world of sound where you yourself become a shrunken kid. Songs like "In the Shade" were directly influenced by oldies music and the innocence of the era whereas other songs on the album fall somewhere in between Randy Newman and Stereolab, recorded with a big-screen vision worthy of the Flaming Lips. No matter where you are, Havana Winter will keep you cool, cool, cool in the shade, both in the temperature sense, and in the Snoopy wearing shades sense. Check tour dates below for shows in Canada & USA.
ELLIOTT BROOD MAKES POLARIS SHORTLIST
Announced yesterday, Elliott BROOD's album, Mountain Meadows, was named one of the top ten acclaimed albums of the year by Polaris. The jury is comprised of approximately one billion (give or take) music critics from across the country, but we won't hold that against them (ha ha?). The mighty lords of Polaris announce the winner of the $20,000 prize at the awards show on September 21. I sure hope they win, because if they don't, I'm sure they'll be brooding about it for months... get it?! We really loved what Elliott BROOD had to say to Chartattack about their shortlist status, especially as it pertains to partying! Check it: www.chartattack.com/news
VOTE FOR SIX SHOOTER
Go to www.thevergeonline.com and vote for Six Shooter. Jenn Grant, Luke Doucet, NQ Arbuckle, Hawksley Workman, Elliott BROOD, and the Wet Secrets are all nominated for Artist and/or Album of the year. The winner receives big ol' mega cash bucks, so please vote today so we can all bathe in crisp, colorful, Canadian currency!
XM The Verge always sounds like a dude's name and title to me, y'know like "in today's news: the sovereign state of Cybertopia was conquered by feared astro-guerilla XM THE VERGE, whose flying cheetah sled carried more lazer power than the meek Cybertopians could handle". That kind of vibe.
VOLVO LOVES HAWKSLEY WORKMAN
Volvo have already cast their votes for Artist of the Year... for Hawksley Workman. Volvo ad execs freaked out when they heard Hawksley's classic Safe and Sound so much that they placed the song in their six-month USA TV-campaign of the same name. I love how old Volvo station wagons had those little secret hidden compartments in the back that you could use to smuggle Hawksley Workman merch (or a bag of oranges, or whatever) into the states with. Do the new ones still have those? A little place to keep your Hawksley Cds Safe and Sound?
VICTORIA DAY RELEASED IN USA
Oh, victorious day! Melissa McClelland has released her stunning new album Victoria Day in the USA. I believe that this now gives Melissa the distinct honour of being allowed to wear those American flag jammer pants, and get an Eagle tattoo (or a pet Eagle).
Also, albums by NQ Arbuckle, Amelia Curran, Elliott BROOD, and Jenn Grant will be released shortly. Possibly in the USA, and possibly enabling the right to bear jammers.
NEW VIDEOS
Justin Rutledge's video for A Penny for the Band, directed by Exan Auyoung is now complete, thus earning the band one penny as per the widely respected "reward system". The video features David Baxter and Bazil Donovan, as well as a cameo by Six Shooter hero, Richard Flohil. Filmed throughout Toronto's west end, including the Cadillac Lounge and on the steps of the Catholic Cathedral on Shaw St., the video paints Parkdale's own blue period. Check it out in person and raise a glass with us on July 15 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm at the Cadillac Lounge in Toronto. Also completed is the Jenn Grant video for Heartbreaker by Ante Kovac.
Oh, and get this... both videos feature a blue guitar. What are the odds?! Do you know how many goddamn colours there are out there?!
Another video in the works is Remind Me in Dark Times by Shout Out Out Out Out, the shoot so far has included spinning front man Nik Kozub around on a lazy susan for a couple hours (barf). Their video for Coming Home is rumored to finally be finished, and features a whole lot of fire, but not much brimstone (as far as we can tell, we're not too sure what brimstone is exactly... if it's another word for synthesizers, then forget that last statement).
All of these videos will look ten times more awesome when viewed via yooouuutuuube. Trust me, it's totally rad: www.yooouuutuuube.com
SHOUT OUT OUT OUT OUT GET FESTIVE
Speaking of Shout Out Out Out Out, our Edmonton pals are getting geared up for a few festival performances over the next month or so. First up they hit the Quebec City Summer Festival, followed by Ottawa Blues Fest, and the Evolve festival in Antigonish. Shout Out Out Out Out were also just announced as part of the lineup for the Calgary stop of the Virgin Festival. Celebration time, come on!
LUKE AND MELISSA HEAD TO SOUTH AFRICA
Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland are totally going to South Africa, it is going to be AWESOME. One time when I was staying in a hotel, I watched this reality show where a spoiled teenage girl had to go to South Africa and build a house out of poop. It was hee-larious, she was all OMG, and I was all ROTFLOL!!! But in the case of Luke and Melissa, they arenÕt going to be building houses, they are playing the Oppikoppi Festival and a number of club dates.
