I am sick of winter. Does that make me a wimp? I know that I?m supposed to be a rugged Canadian, but I?ve really had it with all this cold weather and snow. I want to migrate to Mexico and write this newsletter on the beach with a Tequila Sunrise in my hand.

HAWKSLEY WORKMAN RELEASES BETWEEN THE BEAUTIFULS

We’ve been working our man Hawksley (get it???) since his welcomed new record, Between The Beautifuls came out on January 29. He arrived back in Canada just days after the official street date, following a tour of Australia, some down time in New Zealand, and an intense recording session in Los Angeles where he laid down a couple of steamy songs with a movie star.

Then Hawk swooped down upon The Hour, MTV Canada, e-Talk, Sounds Like Canada and Canada AM, among others, to talk about his slammin? new disc. If you missed the stunner on any of these programs, you can, better yet, catch him in the flesh (fully clothed flesh) when he hits the tour battlefield in March. See tour dates below. We are looking for people to man our merch tables on the tour, so if you’re interested, pat yourself on the back for being such a nice person, then contact @sixshooterrecords.com.

LUKE DOUCET CHOPS THE TARTS

Luke “Broken Thumb/The Falc” Doucet is all about national pride. During his 22-date cross-country tour with Canadian mainstays, Blue Rodeo, Luke hit #1 on both the national campus radio charts last week with his chiefin’ album Blood?s Too Rich. All this and he broke his thumb trying to stop the proverbial dam of suck from flooding by kicking out some sweet jams!

We love this new record, and we are not alone. Critics are raving (in the celebratory sense not the glowstick sense), including the Toronto Star, who proclaims it a “landmark” album. Upcoming for Luke are a kabillion more awesometastic rock shows, including a Montreal appearance where he’ll practice his second language in front of 600 salivating fans (gross!) when he performs on live TV for Quebec’s “Belle et Bum”, Saturday February 23. For the early-riser TV fans, Luke beats the sunrise to play Canada AM, Thursday February 28. And then more touring, which includes a date at Massey Hall with Blue Rodeo, plus some headline action in Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto at the end of the month. See tour dates below. Also, keep your ear to the ice for a listen to his track “Long Haul Drivers” on Hockey Night in Canada.

Ahem, now I will attempt to “Weird Al” some Luke lyrics which denote his current situation.

”If you wanna hear some music, I’m gonna have to strum, but it’s hard to play guitar with a broken thumb!”

badump-cha!

JUNO NOMINEE JUSTIN RUTLEDGE

Celebrated handsome songwriter and local roots fixture Justin Rutledge was up at the crack of dawn last week downing coffee on camera at the Juno Awards press conference. Justin earned his first nomination for his sophomore album (ie. Firstsies-secondsies), The Devil on a Bench in Stanley Park. He’s up for the award alongside Corb Lund, Jill Barber, David Francey & Oh Susanna. Justin teams up with country heroine Kathleen Edwards at the end of March for some US/Canadian tour dates, just ahead of the release of his third album, Man Descending, due out in April 08. More like, “Man that dude is busy”! See tour dates below duuuuuuuuuuuude. I dare ya.

ECMA NOMINEE JENN GRANT ON TOUR WITH HAYDEN

Flaunting her new touress prowess, Jenn Grant is making her way cross country this week with folk-crooner Hayden. She’s also racked up some reward miles on recent tours with The Weakerthans and Great Lake Swimmers. Midway through the tour, Jenn hopped on a red-eye to Fredericton to participate in the East Coast Music Awards, where she was nominated for Female Solo Recording of the Year and Folk Record of the Year. She’s also been picked as a candidate for an Indie Award during CMW in March.

ROYAL WOOD ON EUROPEAN TOUR

Royal Wood has got big designs to conquer the high seas as he makes a 15-date tour of Europe this month. Royal’s latest release, A Good Enough Day was released through Six Shooter/Rounder Europe on February 4. See below for the full deets.

ELLIOTT BROOD DOWN UNDER

The Brood boys are heading to Australia to deliver some blood-curdling screams and foot-stomping good times. Australian label ABC Records picked up Ambassador (still waiting on “Bambassador” and “Cambasador”), and are releasing the record this spring (or fall, depending on your hemisphere dude). A slurry of dates are posted below. On their way to Australia, they boys will jet set to Austin with their cowboy boots to play SXSW and gorge themselves on BBQ. Or at least coleslaw and a bun.

RADIO 3 LOVES CHRISTINE FELLOWS

Another chart topper amongst our ranks is the lovely C. Fellows, who soared all the way to the #1 spot on CBC Radio 3’s charts last week not unlike Vince Neil “skydiving naked from an aeroplaaaane!”. OK, kind of unlike that, but you know what I mean right? She also topped some Best Of lists in 2007 including Vue Magazine, largeheartedboy.com, The Toaster Talks, CKUW, Uptown, and Earshot. SPIN readers take note that the mag will feature of review of the already critically acclaimed ?Nevertheless? in their March issue, just in time for her trip SXSW. Christine stays stateside when a slew of Weakerthans tour dates kick off in late March.

NEW NQ ALBUM IN THE WORKS

Between tea-time with spice biscuits and cartons of smokes (whole cartons. All at once), country-punk-poet NQ Arbuckle and his band of Arbucklers have been penning some smashing new songs for the upcoming album, X O K, which includes newly mapped “Ontario, Michigan” and everyone’s favourite pool party track, “Marco Polo.” Sneak peek is available at his upcoming Toronto show at the Dakota Tavern on Feb 23. Also, bask in his glory during SXSW. I wish NQ had a cat named Gnarfield.

NRMLS WLCM NWS

Our associated Normals Welcome Records pals are stepping up their game over the next few months too!

Shout Out Out Out Out have returned from their Slam Dunk performance at Guelph’s Hillside Inside Festival, and are readying their next release. The upcoming record is a 12? vinyl single (and digital download) featuring SO4’s cautionary tale “In The End It’s Your Friends” backed with a dancefloor ready cover version of Shalamar’s disco classic “Friends” by label mate San Serac. The single also features remixes by each artist, of each other! The single should be ready in time for SXSW in Austin, where both artists will be performing.

San Serac is keeping busy, and he is certainly not neglecting the frozen tundras of Canadia. Starting on the Valentine's Day weekend, the synth-funk crooner will break out the snow tires and head north to bring some romance back to select Canadian clubs (SEE TOUR DATES BELOW). Once home and fully defrosted, he'll continue work on a new LP and remix album. Titled, “You Forgot It In Club”, the remix album will feature mixes by Passions, Johnny Dark, Krames, Wilderness, U-Tern, ova looven, Popular Computer, Initiales A.A., Misty Roses, Portable Sunsets and Tranzistors.

One of San Serac’s Canadian stops will include the dynamic Re-Launch of the NRMLS WLCM club night in Edmonton. After a four year residency at the Victory Lounge / Velvet Underground, Normals Welcome is changing locations and will continue to bring cutting edge Electro, Tech-House, and Disco to Edmonton. The event Re-Ups on Feb. 21st at Pawn Shop, and will run every Thursday night from then on. Resident Djs are NRMLS WLCM label bosses (and Shout Out Out Out Out members) Nik 7 and Jaycie Jayce.

And finally, for those of you in Toronto, check out Colour is the Keyboard - Group Show @ Whippersnapper Gallery (www.whippersnapper.ca) features visual art, video and sound work by musicians including Buck 65, AndrŽ Ethier, Chad VanGaalen, Dallas Wehrle (Constantines) and our very own Will Zimmerman aka Jack Wolfskin aka Willie Dieminzz (Shout Out Out Out Out). The opening reception is April 4, 2008 (7-11pm) with DD/MM/YYYY slotted to play opening reception. The show runs until April 14/08.

WET SECRETS GROW THEIR OWN MOUSTACHES

Our secret (and kind of moist) Edmonton client, The Wet Secrets, whose sophomore album has been to this point a fantasy for us all, just won a Bucky Award in December for Best Song Title: “Grow Your Own Fucking Moustache, Asshole”. We’re all growing them over here in anticipation of said new album, Rock Fantasy, being released officially...officially soon. We are officially hella stoked Brah! Hurry up, we?re starting to look like Lanny Mcdonald over here!!!

GUN STREET GRINDIN’

Gun Street welcomes new clients Gary Louris (Jayhawks, Golden Smog), east-coast rockers Hey Rosetta!, and famed Joe Jackson. We also wanted to give some shout outs to compadres Arcade Fire who are nominated for some Juno action. Meanwhile, southern crooner Kelly Willis? fantastic album ?Translated from Love? was voted one of Allmusic.com's Top Country albums of 2007.

CONTEST WINNER

Winner of last month’s contest goes to long time Six Shooter support and uber Luke Doucet fan, Joanne Hughes from Ottawa:

As the Producer of the Lumiere Lantern Festival (www.lumiereottawa.com ) I can attest that the best use of shitty Cd's is to turn them into magical lanterns! Take 5 Cd's, use four to make the walls of a cube and use 1 on the bottom. Attach with hot glue and also glue a foil tart tin into the bottom. Use a tea light in the tart tin. These can be placed on the ground or hung from trees. Voila! The candle light reflects of the metal surface and makes a wonderful glow. We use them at our festival and welcome donations of shitty Cd's! --Joanne Hughes, Ottawa

For this months contest, we are looking for the most awe-inspiring story of your first introduction to the Six Shooter experience. Was it watching Luke rip a face-melter back in his Veal days? was it falling in love with Justin’s dashing good looks on a streetcar? Was it the first time you heard Martin Tielli? Or was it more recently when you happened across a backyard BBQ jam at the Six Shooter store? We want to hear about it!

Bye Bye for now,
Six Shooteranarians

Title track: From "It's Not Me", track 3 from Hawksley Workman's new album, "Between the Beautifuls".
