TORONTO HOT NIGHTS

Toronto, what’s really, really, really, really, really, really, really good? Winter may have arrived, but we are thawing out our frozen funky chickens with four slammin’ gigaroonies in the next month.

*tickets available at www.sixshooterrecords.com

Nov 22 (tomorrow) also marks a special occasion for us since we are is pleased as plum pudding to welcome Jason Plumb and his label, Soccer Mom Records into the Six Shooter fold. The latest release from this former Waltons’ frontman is in-stores this week, called “Beauty in this World.”

ART OF TIME PRESENTS MARTIN TIELLI AND JUSTIN RUTLEDGE

The Art of Time Ensemble is back with another great night of collaboration between cutting edge songwriters and the classical greats. We are hella stoked yet again, brah! Upcoming on Dec 14 & 15, Art of Time presents Schumann’s Piano Quintet Op. 44 and 10 original songs inspired by the Schumann Quintet written and performed by Canadian singer/songwriters Martin Tielli, Justin Rutledge, John Southworth, Amy Millan, Andy Maize and David Wall. The Schumann Quintet will be performed by Steven Sitarski & Erika Raum (violins), Steven Dann (viola), David Hetherington (cello) & Andrew Burashko (piano).

See what’s going on here? It’s like an oldsie-newsie type jam. The event takes place at the Enwave Theatre. Tickets are available through Harbourfront Centre Box Office at 416.973.4000, or online at www.harbourfrontcentre.com. You get a cool discount if you dress up as Schumann or anything that rhymes with Schumann (no, not really. You all have to pay full price, which you should be grateful for considering that you get to party down with a bunch of modern day Schumanns who are partying down like they were at Schumey-Schumms grad night party since his parents happened to be out of town that weekend, like ohmigod, how perfect!!!!!).

CHRISTINE FELLOWS UNLEASHES NEVERTHELESS TO A HOMETOWN AUDIENCE

Christine has been turning heads and rolling dreads (does that make sense? Are dreadlocks rolled? They look kinda rolled, or at least natty as all hell) across the continent with the release of her fourth disc, Nevertheless. Nevertheless, much to the delight of Winnipeggers, Christine officially launches her new work with a show at the West End Cultural Centre on Nov 29. Hometowners get to have all the fun, waaaaah. Tickets are available at www.sixshooterrecords.com.

HAWKSLEY WORKMAN: TO AUSTRALIA WITH LOVE

What we love best about holiday season....music and presents. Can’t say we really dig on the repetitive Michael McDonald Holiday Magic over the PA at the mall or the dirty, dirty snowbanks, but we do like early gifties, especially from Hawksley Workman. Stocking stuffers include pre-sale, Best Seats tickets, available on www.hawksleyworkman.com for his just-announced Canadian tour in March. Get them now before they’re let loose on scrambling mitten-clad hands Friday, Nov. 23. If you wanna defrost the airwaves, you can request Hawk’s new single, “Piano Blink,” which was delivered to radio with a box of clementines earlier this month. The song is from the upcoming full-length, Between the Beautifuls, being released January 29, 2008.

And the super-mega-ultra gift is Hawksley Workman in a box with bows and ribbons.....in Australia! Yup, we’re giving him a case of snack bars, some Australian slang hand guides and shipping him off to where it’s warmer than here. Talk about an auzzie! (Awesome + Prezzie = auzzie. D’uh!). He’ll spend the rest of the winter swimming back to Canada for his full-fledged national tour in March.

LUKE DOUCET ON TOUR WITH BLUE RODEO

Good googly moogly! We couldn’t be tickled any more pink about Blue Rodeo’s invitation to Luke Doucet to support their upcoming tour for their small (only 5 inches!) yet miraculous new disc, “Small Miracles.” Luke will have a new album of his own ready to fire off to audiences from his face-meltin’ catapult of love called Blood’s Too Rich. Behold the white falcon! That’s a guitar right? The fancy one? Dude, play Stairway maaaaaaan!

2008 PREVIEW

Six Shooter artists are cranking up the power bills at many of Toronto’s studios creating their next masterpizzas. Luke Doucet is mixing his latest with engineers David Travers Smith and Andre Wahl; Justin Rutledge is collaborating with his fave engineer, Darryl Neufeld, on this mix of his upcoming CD; NQ Arbuckle heads into the Lincoln County Social Club with producer Luke Doucet (hey wait a sec’ isn’t he doing that other thing a couple commas ago?) to finish tracking his third album; and Elliott Brood have sequestered themselves in a secret location unknown to me to put the finishing touches on their upcoming release. It’s probably a cardboard box. 2008 is going to be hot hot hot, expensive, hot hot.

NORMALCY

Our affiliated electronic label Normals Welcome has been keeping busy-ish too! Following the release of his excellent “Professional” album, San Serac headed out on the road with label mates Shout Out Out Out Out for a string of Northeastern U.S. and Canadian dates, which included dynamite CMJ performances and culminated in two slam dunk shows at Lee’s Palace in Toronto. From there San Serac went straight back on the road with his pals Tigercity for a bunch more American dates. Shout Out Out Out Out have wrapped themselves in blankets, and are hunkering down in their Edmontonian igloos for the winter, to get started on piecing together their next album. J’yeah!

DANCE WITH THIS AMERICAN TURKEY

The "We Shall Be Released" Last Waltz concert from last year is going to be re-broadcast this year on the American Thanksgiving holiday. That is Thursday November 22nd at 8 PM on Canada Live on CBC Radio 2. Long before the Canadian recording industry got its start The Band paved the way for the Canadian pop / rock musicians of today. On the American Thanksgiving Holiday in 1976, after sixteen years on the road The Band said goodbye to their fans by staging an all star concert that featured artists such as: Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Ronnie Hawkins. We Shall Be Released is a modern interpretation of that event, anchored by Blackie and The Rodeo Kings, and featuring an all-star cast of headliners, including; Kathleen Edwards, Jason Collett, Oh Susanna, Tony Dekker, Dione Taylor, Luke Doucet and Paul Reddick. Check out Luke Doucet as Van Morrison. Ohhhh, I get it! They are pretending! Cool! I guess I should have said all-star cast of headliners / THESPIANS’! Wordy word word.
