CHRISTINE FELLOWS: NEVERTHELESS

Sometimes when you hear a record, it speaks volumes. And sometimes the volume is really loud and it hits you in your heart and makes it beat faster so that you are all out of synch and you get dizzy and you start to see a million stars. Christine Fellows' new record, "Nevertheless" is sort of like that. But also kind of like watching an old silent film where the songs are the people and the people are all paintings and every time they move, they leave a little trail of beauty behind like a piece of toilet paper stuck to a nerd's shoe.

Less is more, so they say. And Nevertheless is the best in the most way (uh, what?). The fourth full length album by Christine Fellows takes its name from a poem by legendary spinster and celebrated poet, Marianne Moore, and is anchored mainly in her life and work. But the album is a collage of solitary characters, brought out from their carefully constructed shadow-boxes and placed in sunlit parlours, under stage lights, into kitchens lit by bare bulbs and overgrown backyards in the stark, slanting light of late summer.

In addition to Moore, the cast features visual artist Joseph Cornell, a spinster named Betty (whose obituary Fellows found in the pocket of her winter coat), the Greek goddess Athena (quite possibly the original spinster), a pair of doomed rolling pigeons, a curiously delicate prize-fighter, several fragments of poetry, a row of plastic lobsters surrounded by paper lace and a dead robin.

Nevertheless hits the stores on November 6. Christine celebrates the launch of her album with a show with Shary Boyle in Lethbridge, shows with the Weakerthans in Ontario, a celebration in Winnipeg at the end of November at the West End Cultural Centre, and back to Toronto for a special Music Gallery show in December. See tour dates for more details.

JENN GRANT ON TOUR WITH THE WEAKERTHANS

Christine is not the only Six Shooter goddess to be invited to share the stage with our beloved Weakerthans. The newest of our crew will join Samson and his crew for over a week's worth of dates in early November. Jenn's lovely album, "Orchestra for the Moon", earned her scores of award nominations recently, including ones from her home province of Nova Scotia for Best Female Artist/Recording, and her birth province of PEI doled out four noms for New Artist, Female Vocalist, Folk Recording, and Album of the year. Yowza!

JUSTIN RUTLEDGE WITH GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS AND BLUE RODEO

After a whirlwind trip through Europe with compadres Luke Doucet and NQ Arbuckle, Justin immediately shot himself out of a love cannon, went to the west coast to play Vancouver, and then hooked up with the Great Lake Swimmers across western Canada. His last stop with GLS is Winnipeg, and then he immediately hitches a plane to Chicago to join the Blue Rodeo & Friends tour, which also features Luke Doucet and Ron Sexsmith. The tour culminates in Nashville on Nov 1 at the Cannery Ballroom during the Americana Music conference.

Oh, and speaking of Luke: Luke Doucet & Amy Millan's episode of FUSE is going to re-air this Saturday at 3:00 pm in all local time zones on Radio One. Saturday at 6:00 a.m. ET and 1:00 p.m. ET on Sirius Satellite 137.

HAWKSLEY WORKMAN JETS OFF TO JAPAN

Konnichi-wa! Hawksley Workman sets foot on Tokyo soil for the first time ever for a performance at the Canadian Embassy. We hear there is a vending machine for just about everything there. We are going to hunt for items of our own soiled garments on the streets of Tokyo!

ROYAL WOOD RETURNS TO THE MUSIC GALLERY

Having concluded his year-long Monday night residency at the Cameron House in August, Royal Wood sets to dazzle Toronto audiences again at the Music Gallery on November 29. True North Records recent signee Catherine MacLellan opens the show. Buy tickets at www.sixshooterrecords.com.

SHOUT OUT OUT OUT OUT + SAN SERAC

Man, have you ever been bitten by bed bugs? It majorly sucks. Zero to itchy in about 8 hours, and then a steady diet of extreme itchiness for the next month or sow. Blah.

Nine guys in a van can get pretty smelly pretty fast. Luckily all the dudes on Shout Out Out Out Out and San Serac's current northeast U.S./Canada tour smell like roses. oh, and sweaty socks. Despite being sleep-deprived and bed bug ravaged, the Shoutset homies are showing their new label mate (once again, San Serac) a lovely adventure. After hitting a string of U.S. dates, including a gangbuster of a CMJ showcase, the fellas head back to Canada for a few PQ and ON dates, culminating in a two-nighter at Lee's Palace in Toronto. Yeeeeeeehaw!

ELLIOTT BROOD HEADLINES A WHISKEY TOUR ACROSS CANADA

Road kings Elliott BROOD stomp across the country on the Exclaim Magazine sponsored Wood, Wires & Whiskey tour, and even though this is their sixth national tour since the release of their excellent disc, Ambassador, the press still has our phones ringing off the hook. The tour kicked off in Montreal and has been going hard ever since. BROOD pals The Acorn and the Sunparlour Players make this trans-Canada convoy a completely good time.

ROYAL WOOD + JENN GRANT TOUR USA

The best and the brightest of last year's Nova Scotian festival, In the Dead of Winter, travel caravan-style through several great cities on the USA east coast in November. Leading the pack are Six Shooter management clients Royal Wood and Jenn Grant, who are joined by an incredible sparkling of talent, including the aforementioned Catherine MacLellan, Jim Bryson, Jill Barber, David Myles, Tanya Davis, and Old Man Luedecke.
