Know what I think is totally gross? When people refer to dog poo as "dog eggs"! Ewwwww! That is a hundred times worse than just calling it a turd!
NOT ONE, NOT TWO, BUT THREE!
Six Shooter Management is very pleased to announce three new signings of late: Jenn Grant (Paris 1919 Records), Royal Wood (Dead Daisy Records), and Hawksley Workman (Universal). Holy Mackinaw Joe!! We are now officially busy bees! Like busier than the only jar of brine in the village during pickling season! Busier than one empty paper cup in a van full of musicians eating giant bags of spitz! Good thing we love pickles and spitz, figuratively speaking!
WENDY MCNEILL UNLEASHES THE WONDER SHOW
It's no secret that we love Edmontonians over here at Six Shooter HQ. Who knew that our love would be reciprocated by a displaced Euro-tonian (a rare breed) residing in Sweden! When we heard Wendy McNeill's new album 'The Wonder Show', we totally high-fived! Then we did little moonwalk dances in the puddles of our own drool (slippery. Makes it easier to moonwalk.), got out the trusty signin' quill, and signed her up real good like. Wendy's latest accordion-drenched outing draws from old folk and country, goth punk and bordello swagger, a unique blend of English poetry, Canadian history and French flair. She alternates between the raucously catchy and emotionally searing to the sweet and sorrowful, kind of like REAL LIFE. Duuuude. Wendy's fine record hits the streets on Sept 25! Can we call it an opus? Sure, it's a freakin' opus!
SIX SHOOTER TRIPLE BARREL TOUR
Six Shooter has rounded up three of its finest, laden them with liquor, smokes, new guitar strings, some extra shoe laces and shipped them off overseas to duke it out, round by round. Triple Barrel is a well constructed tour de force, featuring string-slinger Luke Doucet, whiskey soaked poet NQ Arbuckle and knee-numbing crooner Justin Rutledge (he's kinda like that sore throat stuff but for yer knees).
Luke Doucet, the Juno-nominated guitar afficionado is knee deep in his new record, to be released in 2008. Galaxy Rising Star Justin Rutledge is writing song after song in his brand new house, an apple pie on the windowsill. The critically acclaimed NQ and his Arbucklers are tackling the road-warriors day in and day out, writing a new record between impromtu shows and late night studio sessions. We lassoed the brains out of the brains behind NQ Arbuckle (aka John Dinsmore, Mark Kesper and Peter Kesper) and forced them into memorizing the tunes of both Luke AND Justin, in addition to their regular duties of being awesome dudes in the NQ Arbuckle band. It went something like this: "Listen fellers! No more whiskey-soaked bladi-bloo until you memorize all dem whiskey-soaked tuuuuuunes!" We made them give us whiskey-soaked suitcase packing lessons too. The traveling trio + band of outlaws will be three sheets to the wind for a couple weeks, spreading the alt-country goodtimes near and far.
Luckily the almighty Helen "I want my name in red too" Britton will be shuffling around Europe with these hooligans (as well as Royal Wood and Hawksley Workman), babysitting these helpless musicians and making sure that they find their way to their whiskey-soaked hotels every night!
Their tour dates are listed below and you can read up on each of these cowpokes' backstories at myspace.com/triplebarreltour.
JUSTIN IN TORONTO AND WESTERN CANADA
We're not sure how Justin is going to keep up with the high demand for his homemade pies on the menu of the Dakota Tavern in Toronto, since he's going to be on tour pretty much solid for the next month or so. He needs a home bakin' laptop or something! As soon as he returns from the Triple Barrel Tour in Europe, he rejoins his own band for a beauticious show at the Trinity St. Paul Church in Toronto (also on the bill is our dear friend and goddess, Oh Susanna).
Soon after, Justin takes off with the Great Lake Swimmers to play for audiences across western Canada. Check tour dates below. We are particularly pleased to revisit Edmonton, where Justin just received a Rising Star Award for his hotstuff performances at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival. Yay Edmonton! Yay Justin!
JENN GRANT ON TOUR WITH GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS
Justin isn't the only Six Shooter artist invited to tour with the gorgeous Great Lake Swimmers (seriously, Great Lake Swimmer dude is like a major hottie, almost as hunky as Keanu in a non-speaking role). Jenn Grant is on tour with G.L.S. right this very second! Like, if you were to call her right now and ask what she is up to, she'd be all "Tourin'... With Great Lake Swimmers. in yo' face!". Check out tour dates below (notice the trend here? Tour dates go down there). Also, make sure to pick up a copy of her mega slammin' full-length release, Orchestra for the Moon.
LUKE DOUCET AND FRIENDS
Hot off the Triple Barrel Tour, Luke has barely a week to rest his liver (ie. eat lots of dark leafy greens washed down with cranberry juice) before heading on another foreign tour, this time through the USA (ooooo, "foreign") with Blue Rodeo and Friends, which so far includes the song-tastic Ron Sexsmith. I guess he hopes to make some friends along the way or something. The tour culminates in Nashville at the Americana Music festival, where the Blue Rodeo & Friends show will be presented November 1st at the Cannery Ballroom, complete with Luke Doucet one-arm pushup challenge! Check tour dates (where? Below!) for all the detailios (and you can buy your tickets at bluerodeo.com...woo hoo).
Also check out Luke at Popkomm Sept 21st at Aufsturz Klub, 10 pm. That thurrs in Germany!
ROYAL WOOD'S VIRGIN TRIP TO EUROPE
Luke, Justin, and Neville aren't the only ones headed to Europe this month. Royal Wood makes his first trip ever over the Atlantic, to play the Reeperbahn Festival in Germany, and a showcase in London, UK at the most awesome 12 Bar. He's gonna reeper 'em a new bahn! Get it?!
SHOUT OUT OUT OUT OUT ON TOUR WITH NEW LABELMATE SAN SERAC
Edmonton's danciest export ever, the Juno nominated Shout Out Out Out Out, head back on the road for a couple weeks in October. They'll make a return visit to Baltimore, where they absolutely slayed at the Virgin Music Festival a couple months ago, before heading over to NYC for CMJ. Along for the shows will be SO4's new labelmate San Serac, the latest signing to our dance music affiliate label Normals Welcome Records! Boston-based San Serac combines disco, R&B, funk, and electro, and even channels a bit of Bowie! We are thrilled to the gills to welcome him to our fold. His new album 'Professional' will be packing dancefloors across Canada as of October 9th.
Shout Out Out Out Out's youngest member, drummer Snarf, recently celebrated his 21st birthday by Nick Cage-ing it up in Las Vegas. Assuming he survived, this tour should be an interesting one!
ELLIOTT BROOD HEADLINES THE WOOD, WIRES & WHISKEY TOUR
The never-weary boys of Elliott Brood hit the road again, their SIXTH national tour on the legs of the excellent full-length debut, "Ambassador", this time as the headliners of the Exclaim! Magazine sponsored Wood, Wires & Whiskey Tour. Joining them across the country are the fantastic Sunparlour Players and Paper Bag's nutty new signing, The Acorn. WHISKEY-SOAKED.
CHRISTINE FELLOWS AT POP MONTREAL
Christine Fellows is warming up the ol' keys to play Pop Montreal on Oct. 3 with Julie Doiron. She's gonna give those ivories the ticklin' of their lives! This is in anticipation of her fantastic new record, 'Nevertheless'. We are hella stoked!
FORD PIER IS ORGAN FARMING IN ALBERTA AND BC
Cultivating homegrown habits, Ford Pier gears up for his western tour in support of his new EP, "Organ Farming." (Turns out that because of gas prices, it was actually cheaper for Ford to move back to Vancouver and start the tour from there than it was to fly from Toronto. Actually, he moved back to Van city for his lady love. We've met her. She's sweet. Makes her own gas too. And moonshine.)
MERCH VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
We are looking for volunteers to sell artist merchandise at most of our shows (this goes for Canada & the UK). If you can help out in your city, please contact helen@sixshooterrecords.com . Thanks helpful lil' merchy-sprites!
NOMINATIONS-TIONS-TIONS-TIONS
We'd like to tip our hats to a couple of Gun Streeters who got award nomos recently. Jason Plumb is nominated for a West Coast Music Award for best Independent album, and J.P. Hoe of Winnipeg got a WCMA nod for best Pop album. And hot off the nomination for the Polaris Prize, Chad Vangaalen was also singled out as one of five nominees for the Echo Prize, a songwriting award sponsored by SOCAN. To celebrate, we're sure he's gonna animate a hundred short films about genitalia and feces (he's like that sometimes).
