Tour Dates
This has been a very nice summer. Read this, then go ride your bike while you still can!
FESTIVAL FUN
If you know us, then you know we just love festival season! I tell ya, there's nothing better than firing up the ol' yule log, kicking back with some mulled cider and singing songs about jing-jing-a-ling or rum tum tugger or whatever. In July.
Even if the sleigh rides seem a little more bumpy in the summer, our artists still insist on spreading holiday cheer from festive stage to festival stage. So far our bitchin' roster have hit up the Ottawa Blues Fest, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Mariposa, Motion Notion, Beats Breaks And Culture, South Country Fair, Hillside and most recently, Virgin Music Festival in Baltimore (which has already brought in RAVE reviews for Shout Out Out Out Out). Up next on the Six Shooter festival circuit are Justin Rutledge and Jenn Grant at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Luke Doucet at Salmon Arm, Royal Wood at Blue Mountain, Shout Out Out Out Out at Boonstock, and Elliott Brood at Trout Lake in Ear Falls, ON (we hear NQ Arbuckle might make a surprise visit to this festival also...this weekend!).
AUGUST LOVE
Everybody knows that August is the month for residencies. You didn't know? Um, duhhh. It's called Wikipedia, Google it!
Luke "residency king" Doucet is testing all his new material in front a live studio audience three nights a week for the month of August: at the Dakota Tavern in Toronto on Tuesdays, at the Starlight in Waterloo on Wednesdays, and at the Casbah in Hamilton on Thursdays. He has prepared himself for this jaunt by cultivating a truly inspiring playoff beard. August (official residency month) is also a good chance to catch Royal Wood at his longstanding Monday night residency at the Cameron House (they make a mean crantini) in Toronto, which will conclude at the end of the month. Today I saw a delivery truck that actually said "Steel Erection" on the side of it! I mean, I know their business is erecting steel, but don't ya think you'd notice the blatant schoolyard humor involved in putting something like that on the side of your truck?
See tour dates for other great shows in August, like Luke in his old home town of Vancouver, Ford Pier in his old/new hometown of Vancouver, Justin and Jenn in Calgary TONIGHT, and Shout Out Out Out Out in their home town of Edmonton.
SIX SHOOTER NEW RELEASES
Ford Pier kicked off our seventh year of absolute destructive mayhem (?) with his fantastic EP, "Organ Farming", which had some hot chart action since we smashed the proverbial bottle on its proverbial hull at the not so proverbial Six Shooter NXNE Back Lot BBQ. Other new releases to watch for in the coming months include Wendy McNeill's excellent new disc, "The Wonder Show", and "Nevertheless" a new work from Christine Fellows, slated to hit the stores in early November.
Our dancey-pants pals/affiliates at Normals Welcome Records also have a new album coming out in October, from Boston-based San Serac! J'yeah! More on that one soon.
NXNE ROUND UP
It's been a couple months, but we have just now recovered from NXNE. Holy schmokes. But this was no hangover....more like riding on a cloud of cool whip and, uh. ok yeah, it was a hangover. What a bitchin' party! We took even more stupid photos of ourselves than last year! Justin Rutledge and Luke Doucet kicked off our weekend with chiefin' sets broadcast on Bob Harris's BBC show in the UK, NQ whipped us and everyone else in the Cadillac Lounge into a frenzy on the Friday, which brings us to Saturday. Oh Saturday! Our much blogged-about Back Lot BBQ was a blast. Many thanks to Damzels for the great fashion show, to Ford Pier for a terrific job as MC, to Steamwhistle for the fine brews (even if they did get the sound guy drunk), to our fabu volunteers for keeping it running smoothly, and most of all to the line up of fantastic performers who kept us entertained all day long: Ford Pier, Melissa McClelland, Captain Tractor, Jason Plumb, Valery Gore, Wendy McNeill, Justin Rutledge, NQ Arbuckle, and Royal Wood.
The drinks kept coming as we closed our shop and headed down the street to a fine affair at Joao Carvalho's studio. Then later that night, three jam-packed showcases featuring Ford Pier, Wendy McNeill, Captain Tractor, and many, many crantinis. Am I allowed to say the word crantini more than once in a newsletter? I kind of put it in the same category as "artisan bread", really, who says that with a straight face?! "Oh, I had the most fabulous panini served on artisan bread, it was simply delightful!" BARF. Put your Bluetooth headset back on.
