  6. Tour Dates

Awww man, my bike broke today. the pedal moves the chain thingy, but the chain thingy doesn't turn the wheel! And I bonked my knee on the handlebars when it happened! Can't I get a single break here? Or at least some basic mechanical knowledge to compliment my entirely less practical "love of music" thing? Jeez. C'mon Six Shooter news... ease the pain.

FORD PIER GOES ORGAN FARMING

Ford Pier has somehow found the time to be, decidedly and unbelievably, busy kicking out the jams and kicking in the doors (figuratively, really, it wasn't us!) at recording studios across the country. Between shows with the Rheostatics, including their last waltz at Massey Hall, the scissor-kicking, contralto-singing Ford has managed to record not one - but two albums. He brings out his new set of heat rocks in full-fledged-band-fashion over the course of his brand new six song EP, Organ Farming. This is the first of a one-two punch in the Ford Pier catalog, as he is set to release his full length follow up this fall. Meanwhile, the EP boasts a mini petri-dish of blazing horns, punk-thrash beats, pop melodies, classical training filtered through intelli-rock lyrics that makes one potent shake of loud, meaty, satisfying songs. You can check out one of the new trizzacks on our myspace page, www.myspace.com/ sixshooterrecords . Oh yeah, we're down with the kids.

While Ford plays most everything on the album himself, members of the Ron Sexsmith Band, Fembots and The Weakerthans fill in the gaps. The new Ford biz was recorded from October 2006 to April 2007 at The Gas Station, XM Radio, Rogue Studios, and Shoeboxoffice Poison by Don Kerr, Steve Major, Jameson Elliott, and Michael Phillip Wojewoda.

Organ Farming will be available at a digital download service (try www.sixshooterrecords.com or itunes.ca) on June 5th, and will be coming out shortly in 12" form by our friends at Saved by Vinyl. We like them.

See this live art work Saturday, June 9 @ 10 pm at the Cameron House.

SIX SHOOTER RECORDS PARTIES HARDER, BETTER, FASTER, STRONGER

Celebrating seven years of staying true to our motto: "Life is too short to listen to shitty music", Six Shooter Records throws its second annual Back Lot BBQ Saturday, June 9 from 2-6 pm. The date also marks the first anniversary of Six Shooter Records Art+Records+Gifts, the retail store at 1118 Queen East. Trust me, we really know how to throw a party.

Pulling never-snooty-double-duty, host Ford Pier performs alongside Six Shooter labelmates Justin Rutledge, NQ Arbuckle, Wendy McNeill, Captain Tractor and Valery Gore, plus special guests Melissa McClelland, Jason Plumb and Royal Wood. We'll put on an art show by Louise Upperton (see a few topics below), a tasty BBQ and wash it down with some Steamwhistle beer and lots of post-renovated store stock (like our new magazine section, expanded CD, DVD and book collection, plus new Six Shooter schwag). Our neighbours, punk-rockin' fashion designers, Damzels in This Dress are kicking off the afternoon with a mini-fashion show, so come early if you'd like to see multiple damzels in one dress (although, we may have misinterpreted that and make no promises as to the number of damzels in a single dress). RSVP to fire@sixshooterrecords.com.

SIX SHOOTER ARTISTS @ NXNE

As usual, Six Shooter has "North By" on lock. Check out the big brains on us at the following shows, listed numerically for all you mathematicians:

1. WENDY MCNEILL'S WONDER SHOW. Taking her gypsy-Parisian licks on the road as she jets across the Atlantic to play Toronto during NXNE, this Edmonton born, Sweden based chanteuse blends PJ Harvey, Edith Piaf and early Sinead O'Connor into one accordion-pumping, poetically driven beauty and beast who will leave you feeling like that little pixie dude in the movie Willow that falls into that big barrel of beer and then yells "beeeeeer!" See V2's European stunner (and Six Shooter's latest signing) Saturday June 9 @ 11 PM at the Cameron House, right after Ford Pier.

2. JUSTIN RUTLEDGE AND LUKE DOUCET SET THE TABLE FOR BOB HARRIS. Justin + Luke will be joining the revered BBC Radio guru, Bob Harris for his hot-wired showcase. Wasn't Bill Murray's character in Lost In Translation named Bob Harris? Man, I looove that movie, this show is gonna be sweet! Of course, even if I didn't love that movie, the real Bob Harris is England's premier alt-country booster, and he handpicked the line-up for this perfect showcase himself, plucking both Justin and Luke from the Six Shooter roster. Also joining the ranks will be Oh Susanna, Kathleen Edwards, Jim Bryson, Ron Sexsmith and Blue Rodeo. Holy guacamole (as they say in Mexico)! See them both Thursday, June 7 at Lee's Palace when Justin takes the stage @ Midnight and Luke rocks @ 2 am.

3. THE MECHANICS OF NQ ARBUCKLE. Awash in pen and paper (not the most comfortable bath but whatever gets the juices flowin', brah!), NQ Arbuckle has been busy working on his new album in between European voyages. His recent tours to Italy and the UK in support of his European record launches garnered great reviews and a trip back in the fall. This summer, NQ gears up for some in-studio time and his NXNE showcase with his, ahem, gang of country-twang-outlaws. I wonder if they wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and say "I am a country-twang-outlaw, and dammit, people like me"? See tha 'Buckle rock Friday June 8 at Midnight @ The Cadillac.

4. CAPTAIN TRACTOR GET THE EIGHT YEAR ITCH. Six Shooter welcomes their old friends Captain Tractor back to Toronto, who make their return after an eight (nine?) year holiday on the prairies. Inciting jig-riots and hearty sing-alongs along the northern shield and across the prairies, the gang make for more humid climes and bring their boisterous songs and homemade brews to NXNE. Whenever we mention Toronto to them they keep mumbling something about batcaves and street meat, we're pretty sure it's code for "whose floor are we crashing on and where's a good place to eat?". Crazy Albertanians! See them headline Toronto's cool new bar Saturday, June 9 @ Midnight at The Dakota Tavern.

5. VALERY GORE SPEAKS YOUR LANGUAGE. After conquering Italy, the UK and Japan last year, burgeoning songstress Valery Gore whisked herself off to studios closer to home to get to work on new material. Her NXNE showcase includes a full band set to rock and one ivory tinkling Valery at C'est What, Thursday June 7 @ 11 pm.

6. Also check out performances by our Gun Street pals:
JADE McNELIS, Thurs@11 PM, The Rivoli
J.P. HOE and the TRULY RICHARDS, Thurs@11 PM, The Hideout
JUSTIN NOZUKA, Sat@midnight, The Rivoli

RIVERDALE ART WALK

Six Shooter Gallery is pleased to welcome two slammin' artists to our gallery during the Riverdale Art Walk on June 2-3: Kristina Birkhans and Louise Upperton.

Kristina Birkhans is a Latvian-born stained glass artist and teacher living and working in Toronto, Ontario (hey! That's where we're from! cool!). Her passion for art, healing and self expression make each of her pieces a unique expression of herself and the beauty she sees around her. Kristina was born and educated in Riga, Latvia and now lives and works in the Beaches area of Toronto. If ya call sippin' lattes and watchin' cute doggies walk by work, that is! Sorry, I'm just projecting my idealistic vision of the beaches existing entirely as an espresso soaked puppy haven. East siiiiiiiide!

Louise Upperton is making a repeat visit to the Six Shooter gallery, building on her work from last year's smokin, exhibit. Louise's show will be held over during the entire month of June because we can't bear the thought of a Louiseless day in the next month. Louise is upping her ante with a ton of new paintings that leave no doubt as to why she was nominated for a Juno award last year! Woo!

Louise occupies the following cyber territory: www.louiseupperton.com

The Six Shooter Gallery kicks it at 1118 Queen St. E, and if you are new around here, and you didn't read the topic up a few from here about our BBQ party, it's also a bitchin' record and assorted cool stuff store!

HOT SHOWS THIS WEEK!

The last Tuesday in May is one hot ticket if you live in Nashville or Toronto, or both on the splitsville tip. I'm not entirely sure what I mean by that... maybe what I'm trying to say is that if you have the ability to pull a Superman, then you should most certainly check out Justin Rutledge at the Basement in Nashville and then fly around the world really fast so that you can turn back time and also check out Chad Vangaalen at the Tranzac in Toronto. I never really got that whole thing where flying around the world super fast would turn back time, but whatever, the proof was captured on film so who am I to call kryptonite?

Nashville-ites should also check out Luke Doucet for his homecoming show at the Basement on June 2nd.
