JUNO UNO UNO UNO UNO

We are rightly stoked to say that both of our label partners, NORMALS WELCOME RECORDS and FLEMISH EYE RECORDS both got Juno nominations. Congratulations to SHOUT OUT OUT OUT OUT and to their Calgary compadre CHAD VANGAALEN (who, by the way, also did the cover artwork for SO4’s album), for scoring nominations in the category of Alternative Album. Saskatoon, here we come!

In other Shout out out out out news, the boys are currently in mid-tour and making the long, loooong drive from Philly to Houston. After a bitchin’ sold-out-in-advance show at Lee’s Palace last week, they are continuing their month long journey to SXSW in Austin via NYC. Several exciting new games have been invented along the way to help pass the time in the van, including the very popular “hitsy-breadsie” (in which sound guy John Rubuliak is hit repeatedly with a piece of bread in a plastic bag while Nik keeps score), and “smellsy-shoesie” (I’m sure you can probably figure that one out). Isn’t touring glamourous?

Save this to your blackberries:

Official SXSW showcase: Thurs. Mar 15, 10:30 PM @ Beauty Bar (617 E 7th St)

Other parties:

Insound Party @ Club de Ville (900 Red River), Fri Mar 16, 3:30 PM

MORE SIX SHOOTER SXSW SWEETNESS with LUKE DOUCET and JUSTIN RUTLEDGE

We are pleased to be teaming up once again with our west coast friends for a tequila-fueled bash in Austin. Join us for the MINT/SIX SHOOTER HOOTENANNY: Thu Mar 15, 1 PM 6 PM @ Headhunters (720 Red River).

Featuring: LEANNE ZACHARIAS + the HYLOZOISTS, CHRIS LETCHER, PINE HILL HAINTS, FUTURE CLOUDS AND RADAR, SERENA RYDER, DAVE GOWANS, NOVILLERO, SALLY TIMMS/JON LANGFORD, IMMACULATE MACHINE, MELISSA MCCLELLAND, AWKARD STAGE, MARK PICKEREL, CHRISTOPHER REES, THE CAPE MAY, RAFTER, BAZIL DONOVAN, hosted by CAROLYN MARK. LUKE DOUCET is on at 3:30 PM and JUSTIN RUTLEDGE takes the stage at 4:00 PM. Last year¹s hootenany was a pretty ridiculous party. Oh, and you know we¹re coming correct with swagtastic prizes galore!

Before making the trek to Austin, LUKE DOUCET joins a score of other Nashville locals for a SXSW send off party at the Mercy Lounge on March 12 (doors at 9; Luke is on at 10 pm). For the past month, Luke has been bringing fire to the stages in Nashville. So much that we¹ve extended his residency to include March 6 + March 20 at the Basement (9 pm sharp). He threatens to burn up Austin in the same way, with a score of red hot party performances, including the high profile Canadian Blast BBQ in Brush Square Park and the Red Eye Distribution BBQ at the famous Yard Dog on S. Congress. From there Luke is planning to build his own Dollywood style theme park called Doucenyland. That and he¹s gonna try to train a group of chinchillas to rip face-melting axe solos. Check it out:

Canadian Blast BBQ @ Brush Square Park, Wed Mar 14, 5:00 pm
Red Eye Distribution BBQ @ The Yard Dog (1510 S. Congress Ave.), Sat Mar 17, 11:30 am
Musebox “Nick Drake Covers” Party @ Habana Calle (709 E. 6th St), Sat, Mar. 17, 1:00 pm

JUSTIN RUTLEDGE heads to Austin for his virgin SXSW voyage. He hits the road the day after he returns from Europe, where he just launched his fantastic CD, The Devil on a Bench in Stanley Park, with shows in Italy and the UK.

LUKE and JUSTIN play back to back at the Lightbar on Friday from midnight to 2 AM for the 2nd Annual Six Shooter Records label showcase. Something tells me that it is VERY likely that they will give each other a high-ten in between sets.

CHRISTINE FELLOWS + SUSIE BURPEE CREATE A SISTER'S ALMANAC

Torontonians will be delighted to get a rare visit from CHRISTINE FELLOWS this weekend for the world premier of double-Dora winner SUSIE BURPEE’s production of The Spinster¹s Almanac. This splendidly idiosyncratic and compelling show offers a bird’s-eye view into one woman¹s cabaret of solitude. Christine has created an evocative song-cycle concerned with magic and meaning that acts as both the character's emotional voice and as the story's invisible narrator.

The show runs Wednesday March 14 to Saturday March 17, at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts in the Distillery District, 55 Mill Street, Building 49. Ticket info at www.youngcentre.ca or by calling 416-866-8666.

MARTIN TIELLI + SCHUBERT; FORD PIER + RON SEXSMITH

Everyone else is headed out of the country, but our own Martin Tielli comes out of hiding in Toronto for a collaborative project of his own. He is presenting two new compositions commissioned by Art of Time, in which he incorporates material of his choosing from Franz Schubert¹s iconic and strikingly lyrical Piano Trio #2 in E flat, D. 929. Other artists participating include DANNY MICHEL, ANDY MAIZE, SARAH SLEAN, and JOHN SOUTHWORTH. Performances are March 15 + 16 at the Enwave Theatre, and tickets are available through: http://tickets.harbourfrontcentre.com/tickets/production.aspx?performanceNum ber=3559 .

And for those multitudes wondering how Martin is coming along with his subscription series, I am pleased to report that the music for both albums is nearly complete. I heard them both in their entirety last weekend, and the work is staggering in its beauty. Not long now!

And yet more collaborations have been in the works.. Our very own FORD PIER recently took up the tricky task of re-arranging a track from one of our favourite Canadian songwriters, RON SEXSMITH. Commissioned by the CBC to take the lovely 'Idiot Boy' (from 1999's 'Whereabouts') and flip it from its original guitary-pop version into a whirlwind of classical woodwinds and brass. The world premiere of this stunning beauty aired Saturday February 17 on CBC's GO!.

RHEOSTATICS FINALE

All this talk of Martin has me misty-eyed thinking about the RHEOSTATICS upcoming show at Massey Hall on March 30. There are a few hundred tickets left, available through www.roythomson.com. Snap them up now! Also of interest:

Host hotel: For those people coming in from out of town, we have secured a $95/night rate at the Delta Chelsea, which can be accessed through the following link: http://www.deltachelsea.com/rheostatics . If you have any difficulty, the person to talk to is Wendy Rose, 416-585-4342.

Club shows announced: The Rheostatics are doing two Massey Hall warm-up shows: Sun. March 25 at the Starlight Social Club in Waterloo, ON and Thurs. March 29 at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto. Tickets are $20 and available shortly through www.sixshooterrecords.com.

Out of towner meet & greet: I would like to suggest that the people coming in from out of town show up to the Horseshoe Tavern front bar between 8:00 9:00 PM on Thurs March 29 (before the club show) to meet each other and trade Rheostatics stories.

ELLIOTT BROOD ON TOUR WITH DO MAKE SAY THINK

Also headed stateside this month are ELLIOTT BROOD, who are preparing for their NYC debut on March 20, by playing a bunch of rousing gigs in the Maritimes this coming weekend. Their NYC Annex show is followed by a string of dates with DO MAKE SAY THINK. Watch for announcements regarding their upcoming European tour in May. Hey Elliot Brooders, we recommend Rosario’s Pizza on the corner by the Annex. Slice of life!

NEW T-SHIRTS IN STOCK

We must have turned away fifty people in the months of January + February in search of the coveted shirts adorned with the ride ‘em cowgirl logo and mantra. People, please head on back! We¹ve got scores of new shirts in, and also fantastic new hoodies (or zippies, as it were). Great new greeting cards are on their way as well.

And happy release day goes out to our friends (and client of our sister company, Gun Street Media), THE ARCADE FIRE, whose fantastic sophomore disc was released March 6.

MORE FLEMISH EYE NEWS

The vinyl version of CHAD VANGAALEN’s Skelliconnection comes out in March. It's a co-release with Melodiya Records, and features 11 bonus songs, a gatefold of 50+ drawings, and is on 160GM vinyl. It’s going to be beautiful.

The first ever Flemish Eye label showcase at SXSW is Friday from 10:00 pm Midnight at Lambert’s. If you haven’t caught performances by their beauty roster, CHAD VANGAALEN and THE CAPE MAY, then don¹t miss this! (and you can boot over to the Lightbar right afterwards to see the Six Shooter showcase with Luke and Justin).

Flemish Eye is also pleased to announce that Chad Vangaalen will be touring with Feist! Tour dates below.

LEPRECHAUNS & BEER

If you live in Edmonton or Waterloo, then we wish you a big fat Irish bottoms up for two great shows. CAPTAIN TRACTOR light up the city for their annual St. Paddy¹s Day show at the Starlite Room in Edmonton with German friend + collaborator, MICHAEL WESTON KING; and NQ Arbuckle lights up the Jane Bond in Waterloo. Both shows are of course on Saturday.
