Ok, so popcorn is something I understand. Cob of corn falls into fire, corn pops, caveman tries it, next thing you know we are asking for more "butter-like topping". But how in tha heck did anyone come up with olives? From what I understand, olives are pretty much inedible unless you soak 'em in embalmer's fluid or something (like sherm!), so how did anyone discover that? If I found an olive sitting in a bucket of lime (the white caustic alkaline kind, not the keylime pie kind), I'm pretty sure there is no way I'd be popping that thing in my mouth. The same goes for capers, how the heck did Fred Flintstone think to pickle the lil' buds off his bramble-like southern European shrub and add 'em to putanesca sauce? And what about cookies? Considering all the cooked food in the world, why do they get the privilege of the name Cookie?! The world makes no sense!

Happy 2007 everybody!!!!

SIX SHOOTER COMES OUT GUNS ABLAZING WITH GUN STREET MEDIA

So here we are, 2007! Six Shooter is thrilled to kick off the new year by unveiling our brand spanking new sister company, Gun Street Media, which provides marketing and publicity services to labels and artists for their releases in Canada. We are pleased and proud to launch our new company with four fantastic clients. The Fantastic Four are: Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, The Human Torch, and The Thing, none of whom are our clients, as they are fictional comic book characters. Rather, our four fantastic clients are: Zedtone Records' flagship artist, Eleni Mandell; Good Fences' newest signing, Jade McNelis; Aquarius Records imprint Studio Plateau Records' fabulous band The Slip; and we are also pleased to be sharing the PR duties in Canada with Joanne Setterington of Indoor Recess for The Arcade Fire. Woo hoo! If you are interested in working with us, please contact shauna@gunstreetmedia.com .

You may notice that both of our company names refer to firearms. In case you were wondering, this is a stealthy attempt at "street cred" and not not actually our way of condoning violence. You probably didn't even notice though, since I'm sure you've all been desensitized by television and video games. 2007 is a cold cruel world.

SIX SHOOTER LOVES FLEMISH EYE

Another new relationship for Six Shooter is with Calgary based label, Flemish Eye Records. I was going to be really funny right here and insert the flemish word for eye, but the online dictionary-translation thingy I visited for the translation was totally confusing, and I'm not even sure Flemish works like that, so um, nevermind... no funnies here. We've been swooning over Flemish Eye artist Chad Vangaalen for ages now, and we equally love the beautiful and soulful Cape May, so we're just thrilled that Flemish Eye founder Ian Russell (and all-around good guy... as long as he isn't driving a vehicle with food poisoning) took us up on our offer to provide him with label management services. On behalf of ourselves and our dancy-pants friends in Edmonton at Normals Welcome Records, we welcome Flemish Eye to our upstart fold of the young and bitchin'. Awwww yeah, we've got Alberta on lock! Distributed by Outside Music in Canada, Flemish Eye is going to be joining us at MIDEM to spread their wings worldwide. Cannes you feel it?! ...um, that was a pun by the way. Cannes / can, get it? Can I get a film fest over here? (ahem, switcharoo pun).

SIX SHOOTER ARTISTS LEAVE THE COUNTRY

It's January in Canada, so as many of us are splitting town as possible. On account of it being all chilly-styles that is.

Justin Rutledge is on his way to NYC to play Joe's Pub on January 17 with Jim Cuddy. He then jets off to Cannes, France, to meet us at MIDEM, where he and his band perform at the EMI Music Publishing sponsored Opening Night Gala at the Hotel Martinez. Zut alors!

Shout Out Out Out Out are also heading to Europe... First off to Berlin to play a show at Magnet on January 18, and then over to London, UK to dance the pants off the folks at the Barfly. Shout Out Out Out Out plays at 8:30 pm and Whitey Houston are on at midnight. Nik 7 and Jaycie Jayce will also be DJing at this show! Hopefully Nik doesn't bust his head open with a microphone like he did on New Year's Eve!

Luke Doucet is kickin' it back in Nashville, where he is doing a Tuesday night residency at the Basement every Tuesday in February with full band in tow. Chances are he'll be doing some Nashville pickin', since that's what they do there! Watch for a couple of other dates here and there for the Douce, including a coveted spot on the Mountain Stage on February 4 opening for Patty Griffin (radio broadcast is syndicated by Public Radio International and XM Satellite Radio, check www.mountainstage.org for details). In other Lukey Doucey news, Americans will soon be able to see his fresh-faced mug on MTV in the USA, where Luke's video for "Broken One" has been added to the program "The Freshmen". http://www.mtvu.com/music/freshmen/ . Please vote for Luke on eaTV's Most Wanted where Luke is currently #5 - http://fuse.tv/feature.php?id=585.

Elliott Brood seeks the warmest climes of all and will be basking in the California sun in January. The tour was originally scheduled to support the Tennessee Three; however, the band sadly had to cancel their tour due to illness. Elliott Brood is going forward with dates in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Davis, Santa Cruz, and a headline theatre show in Santa Barbara which is already sold out! Say hi to the artichoke crops for us, fellas!

TURNING UP THE HEAT ON QUEEN STREET EAST

Coming up at the Six Shooter Gallery (1118 Queen St. E):

Royal Wood in-store concert: We are weak at the knees in anticipation of the upcoming in-store concert by magnificent artist Royal Wood. His new record, "A Good Enough Day", released on Dead Daisy Records, will make you swoon more than Prince William at a dirty movie (the other kind of royal wood). Can I even say that?! It hits the streets and our store on January 30. Join us at 7 pm for some refreshments and beautiful songs.

Edmonton artist Raymond Beisinger presents "Pep Rally: 36 Felt Pennants about things you can care about", February 1-25 in our back Gallery. Come on down and give three cheers for the good things in life, such as Social Democracy, Gays, Cats, AA, Lesbians, and Edmonton. Yaaaay, Edmonton! We'll wave that pennant any day!

CONTEST WINNER

Winner of the Top Ten List draw was Richard Nolet. Congratulations, Richard! Please get in touch with us and we will send you a sweet swag pack. You can check out Richard's top ten and a swack of others at www.sixshooterrecords.com.

This time around our contest is two-fold. First the winner must provide us with the correct Flemish word for eye. Second the winner must come up with a witty caption for a t-shirt depicting a cartoon raspberry doing push-ups (an image that I inexplicably can't get out of my head). Entries will be judged based on our own skewed witty-o-meter.
