CHRISTINE FELLOWS ON THE MOUNTAIN TRAILS
We all know that Christine Fellows can roll with the best of them, and there is no better than John Darnielle's Mountain Goats (check out their new album out on 4AD), who have invited the lovely Ms Fellows on tour with them this fall (see tour dates below). News of the tour is already helping to build momentum in the USA where her fantastic album, Paper Anniversary, is about to be launched. Check out Christine Fellows brand spankin' new website for more info (www.christinefellows.com).
NOT SAYING / JUST TOURING
Okay, so Jaycie Jayce didn't tell me this himself, but rumour has it that Shout Out Out Out Out's stage left keyboardist actually managed to lock himself in the bathroom for half an hour yesterday! Haw Haw! He also has outrageously tickly ribs. It's true!
After playing four sold out CD release shows in their home province of Alberta (2 each in Edmonton and Calgary), complete with giant light-up letters and drummers stacked on top of each other via scaffolding, the next logical step for Shout Out Out Out Out is to take their explosive dance party on the road! Yep, Shout Out Out Out Out's electro-rocking debut album "Not Saying / Just Saying" has finally been released, their unstoppable live shows are still bananas, and it's time to put the two together for the first leg of the Not Saying / Just Saying tour... tentatively subtitled the "Keep It Under Forty Feet Tour" as they attempt to source out a vehicle that can transport seven dudes and a giant buttload of gear across Canada. These shows are with their dancey-pants pals Holy F*ck and rocky-rock pals Land Of Talk.
Recent rave reviews and prime time on campus charts have further fueled their spreads in Chart Magazine, Exclaim and some cover action with VUE Magazine and BeatRoute plus the Edmonton Journal's and The Globe + Mail's Arts Sections. Currently sitting in the predatory position at #2 on the earshot! charts, and #4 on chartattack, S.O.O.O.O. are poised and ready to scissor-kick their way across the country until they split their pants.
Oh and hey, wanna help us out? We are looking for volunteers to sell Shout Out Out Out Out merch in each city on the tour (see dates below). Please contact shauna@sixshooterrecords.com to volunteer.
HAIR ON THEIR THIGHS FROM HIGHLAND BEERS
Elliott Brood are helping Corb Lund celebrate his double gold status all the way across Canada. And wowee, look at all those shows in Alberta. It's a lovely thing. We love Alberta by the way, especially the glory land of Edmonton with it's golden rivers of Pilsner, friendly folks, and occasional hockey riots (okay that part sucks, but the pilsner and pals part rulz!). In other Brood news, we should mention that the band's animation whiz, Aaron White has been hard at work creating another masterpiece, this one for the Bridge. Check out http://broodsbridge.blogspot.com.
LUKE'S BROTHER IN ULTRA MEGA
After playing festivals all summer with his wife and daughter, Luke Doucet keeps it in the family by asking his brother, JD, to make the trek across the Shield from Winnipeg to open his show in Toronto at the Horseshoe on September 15. JD's band is called Ultra Mega. We have no idea what kind of music they play, but we LOVE John Daniel and can't wait to see him rock the stage. It's probably like klezmer-metal-funk or a Doors cover band or something, but whatever he gets a pass just for being a radical dude. I'm joking about the klezmer-metal-funk part of course (unless that's your bag), we are pretty darn sure that JD,' set will be, ahem, Ultra Mega! Get it?! The show is going to be even more killer since the addition of the soon-to-be-notorious band, Run With Kittens. Oh yeah, and I've heard that Luke guy is pretty sweet too.
LUKE HEADS DOWN SOUTH
Shortly following the Horseshoe gig, Luke heads stateside to start relentlessly hittin, them bricksto promote his album in the USA. Starting with a bumpin, showcase set in Nashville at the Americana Music Conference, Luke plays a string of dates with a bunch of soon-to-be-new pals, including Melissa Ferrick, Rod McDonald, and Dan Bern. With the help of our AWESOME new agent, Adam Bauer of Fleming Artists, these dates are the first of many to come as we prepare to re-launch "Broken (and other rogue states)" in the USA. Maybe if he plays enough American shows they'll let him vote! Or at least write songs about voting! (actually, I think Luke has a song about voting...)
LOUISE GETS ALL UPPERTON IN OUR GRILL
We are hella mega stoked to host a bitchin' new exhibit in the Six Shooter Gallery by Louise Upperton. The show opens this Wednesday (August 30) from 7 - 10 pm, with tunes spun by House of Blues' Jason Grant. Refreshments served (of course... cross your fingers for Fresca). I'm sure a lot of you are already familiar with Louise's art direction and creation of a whole heap of fantastic indie rock album covers (um, like Broken Social scene, Stars, Jason Collett, etc. etc.), but lemme tell ya, her paintings are a whole other ball of wax. This stuff is amazing, you really must come by and peep this show.
Her paintings swell and rise out of spotted canvasses, emerging in solid colours and ghostly hues. They swirl amidst abstract and surreal: old newspaper print, stenciling, blurred images and evidence of gothic beauty. Headless women congregate at a fountain of death, masked girls hover in a blood red sky. It's Tim Burton in watercolour. It's Rothko meets Edgar Allen Poe (with a sense of fashion). It's dark, clever and disturbing, yet hauntingly good and chillingly beautiful.
Up next in the Gallery is a show by the fantastic Heather Goodchild.
IN-STORE PERFORMANCES: LILY FROST, MAJOR MAKER
Bucketloads of refreshments will also be served at a pair of rippin' in-store performances at Six Shooter central on two successive Tuesdays: Aporia Records, Lily Frost launches her icy-fresh new disc, "Cine-Magique" on September 19 and Major Maker celebrates the release of their Todor-ly awesome disc on September 29. Performances begin sometime around 7 pm at 1122 Kissy-Kissy avenue, oh wait... That's Miss Piggy's house, the store is actually at 1118 Queen St. E.
Oh yeah, and guess what?! These in-store jobbies are really dang fun!!! At the last one, featuring the wonderful Carolyn Mark, Helen was having so much fun that she couldn't help but teach small children how to do that zombie dance from the Backstreet Boys, "backstreet's back" video! It's true, here is visual evidence:

SIX SHOOTER USA NEEDS SOME EYE DROPS
We are pleased to announce that our new distributor in the USA will be Red Eye Distribution. This is the part where I either say that we stayed up all night inking the deal, or that we took an overnight flight to sign the papers, or that we accidentally fell asleep while wearing contact lenses, or some other such wisecrack about ending up with red eyes. Regardless of my poor attempts at comedic genius, our new distributor is totally radical, and the first two records out of the Red Eye gate will be Luke Doucet's "Broken (and other rogue states)" and Christine Fellows' "Paper Anniversary".
VALERY GORE RELEASED IN GERMANY
The release date of Valery Gore's self titled album in Germany is September 1st. Brush up on your German by checking out the upcoming reviews in Stereo, Rolling Stone, Visions, Westzeit, and Auf Abwegen. I love pretzels with mustard. I also love fries with mayo. Know what would be soooo gross though? A dreadlock in a hotdog bun with mustard on it! Yucky! Hopefully they don't serve that last one in Germany, I don't think I could stomach it. Germans make really good techno.
