Wow. So as I write this my thoughts are being drowned out by the sounds of a full-on riot which is raging two blocks away. Apparently hockey playoffs are a great excuse to act like a jackass. Oh great, here come the helicopters...

SIX SHOOTER TURNS SIX

Six years ago on the sixth day of the sixth month, Six Shooter Records was born. Yay! Birthday party of the beast! Since we started, we've been keepin' it real with buggy loads of biznass: 24 releases to date, not including those newly released on Six Shooter USA & Six Shooter Europe; we were named one of Canada's Top Ten Most Influential Labels; two of our artists were nominated for a Juno apiece; we've made a family home to our roster of seventeen artists including those from our strong management arm, which we be steady flexin'; and heck, we've thrown at least a couple grilled cheese sandwich parties... Most of all, we've made it our mission to front some decidedly non-shitty music.

PARTY LIKE IT'S 2006 AT NXNE

We are celebrating our birthday in all kinds of ways: Martin Tielli jumping out of a cake, Luke Doucet victory lap around Hyde Park, cupcakes for every meal until next year's birthday, "stay in the tub until you get pruney" Tuesdays, matching Six Shooter tattoos (ok, maybe not), but mostly we'll be toasting ourselves silly with Ford Pier's special shooters (six of 'em maybe?), the Mishkalishka, at our BACK LOT BBQ during NXNE on Saturday, June 10 from 2 pm to 6 pm. The party marks the grand opening of our store and gallery at 1118 Queen St. E. Performances by Valery Gore, Ford Pier, NQ Arbuckle, and Luke Doucet, with special guest appearances by Melissa McClelland, Oh Susanna, Selina Martin, and more. Sponsored by XM Satellite Radio and Amsterdam Brewing Company. Beeeeer!!!

(p.s. we are looking for volunteers to help out at this event. E-mail shauna@sixshooterrecords.com if interested).

DID WE SAY WE'RE OPENING A STORE?

Yes, I do believe we did just say that we're opening a store. And geez, we're even beating Starbucks to the proverbial triple-non-fat-whatever punch by opening in the burgeoning Queen Street East area. At Six Shooter, we love great music (like, duh!) and we also have a healthy obsession with bitchin' swag. Destination hipsters and passersby can peruse the fine selection of Six Shooter flasks, belt buckles, t-shirts, toques, shot glasses, keychains, umbrellas, notebooks and shoulder bags...plus of course, records galore! Our tidy but smart record section features a wall full of great albums, categorized by great Canadian labels (yep, we are always down for reppin' our homies). Also check out our wicked lines of great jewelry from twitch-worthy local designers, most notably Sarah Doucet's awesome Twitch designs. We'll be open for biznasty in June, bug.

AND AN ART GALLERY?

Located within our cozy Queen Street store (see above) is a small art gallery and we are honoured that the inaugural exhibition shows paintings by none other than Six Shooter's own Martin Tielli. Anyone who has seen Martin's artwork (or heard his music) knows how amazing this dude is. The exhibition will focus primarily on the exquisite Thumbelina paintings he created for the album artwork for Melissa McClelland's upcoming release (Orange Records). Our party on June 10th marks the grand opening of the exhibition, however, we hope that you will also be able to view this work during the Riverdale Art Walk the week before (June 3-4). Martin will also be showing some other pieces during this show as well (but hopefully not his cod piece), so please visit us anytime during the month of June to ch-ch-check it out.

(Artists wishing to exhibit their work should contact shauna@sixshooterrecords.com).

CHRISTINE FELLOWS + SHARY BOYLE

We are more excited than ever to announce that we are officially managing the fantastic Christine Fellows. Christine has been on our label roster for four years, and we are thrilled to get even more involved with her work.

Christine's upcoming project is called "Shadow Songs", a collaboration with acclaimed visual artist, Shary Boyle, who through the use of live illustration and an overhead projector, brings a stunning visual element to an already fantastic live performance. Christine describes the project as a work about taxidermists, fax machines, clumsy birds, emergency wards, funerals, and driving up and down the Trans-Canada highway. That being said, the Shadow Songs tour is mostly about perfecting badminton skills and making little kids cry. At the same time.

Sneak yo'self some previews of the collaboration this June in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Winnipeg, followed by appearances at summer festivals from Dawson City to Guelph this July. Opening the June shows is Montreal's Steve Bates, who is unveiling his debut solo recording, the dim coast. Check him out at http://www.m-oso.net/. See tour dates for more details.

Get a sneak peak at this fabulous show by viewing Christine's new video for "Migrations" at www.sixshooterrecords.com.

LUKE DOUCET DRINKS "COFFEE"

Coffee drinkers in Scotand love Luke Doucet. Maybe it's 'cause his name sounds kind of like donut and they want to dunk the lil' guy. Do they have donuts in Scotland? Where's my fact checker when I need him? Luke's UK tour kicked off with a couple of appearances at Beanscene Cafes, who have invited Luke to participate in their upcoming music club and will be selling his CDs in their stores... at least until they realize that the baby-faced phenom is a decaf man.

See tour dates below for all the deets. A couple of other things of note: the Josh Rouse shows in the UK start early (ie, 7 pm), and note that we've added a Twelve Bar show to the itinerary (we looove 12 Bar). Plus, Germans can welcome Mr. Doucet to their fine country for the first time! Bring Spatzl.

Luke also has a new video...in fact, he has TWO new videos. One for "It's not the liquor I miss" directed by Yael Stav, and the other for "Wallow", shot in LA by director Luke Hutton. Check the website next week for the launches.

IT'S NOT A DICKEY!

There's something about robots that just lends itself perfectly to pop music. Or at least, that's the theory our cohorts over at Normals Welcome Records are goin' on about. Black Turtleneck is a synth-pop duo from Toronto that features Jason Amm (Solvent) and Thomas Sinclair. Their debut album "Musical Chairs", in stores June 6th, contains 10 modern, complex synthesizer pop songs for the introspective black turtleneck set, working the day job in silent contempt, with dreams of leaving..... Songs about clublife for people who don't like clubs, and window shopping melodies for those feeling spent. If you like your electro-pop in the vein of Soft Cell, Human League, Depeche Mode, and Yazoo, then this one is for you!

VALERY GORE CONQUERS EUROPE

Europe is about to increase their ou-la-la factor by at least a couple points with the addition of Valery Gore to their record store shelves and songwriter cafes. It won't be long until the runways are filled with hoop-earrings made from Valery Gore CDs. How Chic! Her self-titled debut will be released throughout Europe on June 26. Stay tuned for a fine selection of pasta filled tour dates in July. Go for the Bucatini, Valery!

CONTESTS

Okayee, so the winner of our O.S.S.P.P.A.S.M. contest is Steve Shikaze. The revolution is in good hands as long as Steve is packing the bags!

For our next contest we want you to create a short madlib story about Six Shooter Records and our wonderful artists! Y'know, something along the lines of: "July rolled around and finally it was time for _____ to head out on tour in the fine country of ____, where he was to perform at a chain of _____ shops called _____." or whatever. I just want something that'll look funny if I put the word "fart" in every space. ...(what do you expect? We're only six years old).

Beauty-eauty-eauty on,
Six Six Six Shooter

title track: "forever indebted", track 1 from Shout Out Out Out Out's unreleased album, "Not Saying, Just Saying".
