Hatspotting
Dear everyone, yes I realize that French fries with mayonnaise are probably not very good for me, and no I don’t eat this all the time. Geez.
HAPPY NEW YEAR
Vol. 3 No. 1? What the?! 2006? How did that happen? Um... Welcome! Happy New Year! If my math is correct (which, admittedly, it rarely is), 2006 is primed and ready to reap the rewards of all of 2005’s hard work! Yay!
Thanks to everyone that was a part of the over-capacity crowd at Shout Out Out Out Out’s insane new year’s dance party in Edmonton. You pretty much had to crowd-surf over the sea of people to get to the bathrooms, and we thank you all for enduring such strenuous party duress.
Apparently the entire world fell in love with Six Shooter artists in 2005 and our posse represented hard on a bunch of “best of” lists... too numerous to mention them all, but we were thrilled about how much CJSR loves Whitey Houston, how the Winnipeg Sun loves Christine Fellows, and how the Georgia Straight loves Luke Doucet. Oh, and we hear that Luke Doucet and Elliott Brood are both up for some awards from the CMW Indies ...Luke for best solo artist and Elliott Brood for Galaxy Rising Star. It would seem that our love has beaten the bird flu to the infectious punch if you know what I’m sayin’.
WHITEY HOUSTON LOCK THE DIAL
Congrats to Whitey Houston, who are Sonic’s band of the month in Edmonton this January. They are on the radio all the frickin’ time now, apparently their Myspace friend requests are through the roof, and Gravy even had to change his name to Gary V. to maintain his coveted anonymity. Be warned fellas, super-stardom is a cruel mistress. Wanna see what all the buzz is about? Check them out live on Jan. 26 in Edmonton (see tour dates section below).
LUKE DOUCET: MAJICIAN
Sonic in Edmonton is playing Whitey, and Majic in Ottawa is playing Luke Doucet, which is funny because once I saw Luke pull a rabbit out of his pants. Yay! I’m just kidding though, that wasn’t actually a rabbit. Anyway, we love hearing our songs on the commercial airwaves. In other great Luke Doucet news, we were like totally mega hella stoked to learn that Luke’s album, Broken, was the 10th most added album to the CMJ Top 200 in the US last week. Yaaah, I‚m pretty sure that’s like a PB and J, and as long as they cut the crusts off that sucker, it sounds like a pretty mean sandwich! Luke was also added to XM Café (that’s satellite radio, not coffee from outer space) and several AAA/Americana stations, including WFPK in Louisville where he is playing their “Live Lunch” show on Friday, Jan. 20, which coincidentally is his pal Nik’s birthday. Luke hits the road with his other pal Josh Rouse on Thursday...see tour dates for show details.
Luke’s album will be available in the USA on February 14th, and those of you in Canada who are looking for another hit (who isn’t?) can check out the “From the Heart” compilation, which is basically a male version of Women in Song (um... barf?). Alongside Luke, the compilation features Ron Sexsmith, James Blunt, and a bunch of other hunks who are all crazy sensitive and remember to put down the toilet seat. And if you‚re crazy about compilations like they are about sensitivity, then check out Justin Rutledge on the Loose Music compilation “Sounds Like Country” released late last year in the UK. On the serious tip though, compilations are a great way to check out a variety of artists‚ tracks. Am I right?
AMERICAAAAAAAMBASSADOR
Luke Doucet’s “Broken” and Elliott Brood’s “Ambassador” both hit the streets of the USA on Valentine’s Day. Maybe their albums will smooch. Probably. Christine Fellows’ “Paper Anniversary” follows a month later. Maybe it’ll... um... make a sailboat? Oh, and yes, everyone will be on tour. For instance, you can check out a boatload of us at SXSW this year... maybe it will be a paper sailboat-load, who can say?
POISON NOT POISSON
Hey, we’ve been telling you about it for months, so I’m sure none of you will miss Black Widow which airs Thursday, Januaury 19th (tonight!), at 8 pm on the CBC Television arts series "Opening Night" (national network). It’s a movie about dismembered hardboiled eggs or something, and it stars our pal Martin Tielli!!!! Yay!!! Sarah Slean is also in it, and so are some other super rad people with long, hard to type names! You should watch it.

Don’t bug me, I’m Local: contest
In anticipation of our upcoming US launch, one of our intrepid correspondents (aka Shauna‚s sister) has been diligently researching the US market for us, and has documented a number of important observations that will no doubt be helpful in integrating with the local wildlife when we launch in America. For example, when in LA I have been informed that it is all the rage to sport a variety of interesting hats just like Uma Thurman does, perhaps even all at once, and when in NYC, our artists should either wear plaid shirts or don the double-t-shirt look. If coupled with a casual sport coat, then they are really guaranteed to have success and grace the pages of Star magazine. So our contest this month is to give us a hand and seek out the hottest American fashion tip to keep us on the cusp.
