RED EYED AND BLUE
Amerikaners rejoice! We will be Six Shootin' south of the Canuckistan border as of February 14, 2006. Won't you all be our valentines? Close your eyes and pucker up! The first three records out of our trousers will be Luke Doucet's Broken, Elliott Brood's Ambassador, and Christine Fellows' Paper Anniversary. We are like mega hella stoked brah!
WINTER NATIONALS IN THE NATION OF PERPETUAL WINTER, EXCEPT FOR SUMMER WHICH IS ACTUALLY PRETTY HOT, BUT NOT AS HOT AS RICK ASTLEY IN THE VIDEO FOR 'TOGETHER FOREVER'
The Rheostatics will perform their 5th Annual Fall Nationals-- renamed the Winter Nationals for this year's late start-- from Dec. 8-17th at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto. The 10-day event will feature a score of fine opening bands, weekend films from the comedy troupe Truthhorse, the ever-popular Guest Vocalist Night (Dec. 15th), an all-ages weekend show (all ages? bring your grandma!), a night devoted to the album Whale Music, the launch of a collector's item CD recorded during last year's run, and various yuletide mania. There have even been rumours that the Rheostatics might make an appearance! Tickets are on sale at all the usual outlets and also at sixshooterrecords.com, which is quickly becoming one of said usual ticket outlets.
SOME BANDS ROCK VANS, OTHERS, THEY MOTOR HOME
Luke Doucet, Six Shooter Records' golden griffin of a cutsie wootsie rootsy rocker (he is not actually all that cutsie wootsie, in fact, he is somewhat dark and mysterious... and crazy hunky, like a pre-pigeon-accident Fabio or something), recently troubadoured his ass across Canada with about a bajillion other filthy musician types (ie. his own hot sauce brewin' band, Fembots, Shout Out Out Out Out, and Whitey Houston) on Exclaim! magazine's Four For Fall tour. Many, many faces were melted in his wake. Hi Luke!
Tour highlights included Lyle 'whitey' Bell consuming an entire 9 lb box of mandarin oranges as part of a bet on stage during Shout Out Out Out Out's set in Victoria (that's a double box folks ...and he didn't even get the runs! That was the other part of the bet! Amazing!), Luke's band experiencing the joy of wrong turns that resulted in accidental border crossings and ended with strip searches, and every band being baffled by a 19 year old maraca playing spazz named Snarf.
At the end of it all, Six Shooter fell in love with rockers Whitey Houston, and welcomed them into their management fortress, safe from the cruel, flame engulfed, smelly-ogre stinking, outside world of non-Six Shooter management. Inside the fortress they have joined their pals Shout Out Out Out Out at the Six Shooter Management round table where they sip delightful chalices of mead, listen to Luke Doucet ripping crazy lute solos, and dream of ridiculously high charisma rolls.
LUKE DOUCET IS TURNING ENGLANDESE, YES HE'S TURNING ENGLANDESE, I REALLY THINK SO.
Bob Harris of the BBC recently did a two-hour special on mushy peas... oops, I mean Canadian music, in which Luke Doucet was featured prominently. You can take it in at: http://www.bobharris.org/pages/index.htm. In other UK news, pick up a copy of December's issue of 'Word', which includes Luke's 'It's Not the Liquor I Miss' on their new music compilation. Word. Get it?
Check out the TOUR DATES section below for a full listing of Luke's upcoming Marmite n' Pasta tour (UK/Italy), which includes a slammin' opening slot for Josh Rouse in London. Torontonians can welcome him home Dec 15/16 at the Rivoli (tickets for that one are available at sixshooterrecords.com, a usual outlet).
TRANS-CONTINENTAL BROOD
Hooray! This week, Elliott Brood is # 1 on CBC's National Playlist - it was the only song that all four judges voted for! You can join in the fun by voting, too. Here’s how: http://www.cbc.ca/nationalplaylist/vote.html. EVERYONE LOVES THE BROOD! "Everyone", of course, includes a sea of new fans in Europe, where the boys just returned from a two-week stint. Shine up your braces western Canada, 'cause Elliott Brood are on their way to you now. They are traveling in a parade float that looks like a big bowl of French onion soup. I mean, a van... traveling in a van. I always get those two mixed up.
NQ ARBUCKLES UNDER THE PRESSURE OF HOLIDAY EVIL
NQ wrote a Christmas song called "Christmas in Hell". He wrote it after having a particularly vivid dream of a melty snowman that vaguely resembled that Anton Lavey guy. Actually, that is entirely speculative, he may very well have written the song while frolicking with bunnies in a jelly tree orchard. In any case, you can download this righteous jam right now at all good digital music providers. Or if you're in Alberta, you can see Mr. Arbuckle and his band in person (see TOUR DATES section below) this coming weekend.
NOVEMBER? MORE LIKE MO'VIDEOBER! WHA'!?
It's November and everyone has a new video, even Martin! Luke's video for "Broken One" can be seen on MuchMoreMusic, Valery Gore's video for "Dancing" can be viewed on Bravo!, and we are about to release videos for Justin Rutledge's "The Suffering of Pepe O'Malley Part III", NQ Arbuckle's "Sun's Hanging Low", Elliott Brood's "Second Son", and Martin Tielli's "Cold Blooded Old Times". If these are not put into rotation on our country's various music video stations, you have our permission to write a plethora of angry letters! You will also be able to view them all at sixshooterrecords.com (after writing a plethora of angry letters).
BUST A RUT
After months of shrewd negotiating back and forth, we have finally decided that bulk peanut butter is the way to go. Oh yeah, and we've finally inked the deal for Justin Rutledge with EMI Music Publishing. Woo hoo!
VALERY GORE: ROAD WARRIOR
Valery Gore heads out west for her first full-on tour ever (so be nice to her!) with the fabulous Jorane, who, according to the poster I saw today in Edmonton, has something to do with a violin. We would like to take this moment to remind Valery that touring is a battlefield, and no fun is allowed. Serious business. Check the TOUR DATES section for all the schmetails.
CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE WOO HOO!
Shout Out Out Out Out head into the studio next month to record their full length album album album album. Expect their highly anticipated electro-rocking dancey-pants mayhem to be released this spring. Many, many synthesizers have been accumulated for this project.
Shout Out Out Out Out are also throwing their very own New Year's Eve party in Edmonton! They will be joined on stage by like-minded dancey-pantses Dietzche V and the Abominable Snowman, and Lazersnake for the ultimate nrmls wlcm NYE dance party! More details on this will be available soon at nrmlswlcmrecords.com and sixshooterrecords.com
