New Contest!
You know, the first time I tried honey mustard pretzels I actually thought that I would never have to eat anything else. They seemed so, so good at the time. I wound up buying a big bulk bag full of them at the supermarket, and once I got halfway through the bag I pretty much never wanted to see them again. I am only now warming up to the idea again (this was a few years back you see). These days I'm on more of a grilled sandwich trip, which I think will have more lasting power. The moral of the story is of course... HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Welcome to 2005, let the irreverent hilarity begin... or whatevah.
LUKE DOUCET SITS IN HIS OWN PEW...HEHE.
Those of you who think that watching a Luke Doucet show is a religious experience can kick it up a few nuggets next Friday. That's right, on Jan. 14th (that's this Friday), Luke will be performing all fancy styles at the Trinity St. Paul Church in Toronto (Bloor/Spadina). He's going to blaspheme all over the place with a complete backing band and a string quartet! Doesn't that sound purdy? That gets a resounding 'Holy Moly!' from me. Tickets are available at Soundscapes, Rotate This, Maplemusic.com, and ticketty-boo-master. Amen!
On a bummer note, big sorries to Luke Doucet fans in Waterloo...we're going to have to back out of his show there on Jan. 28 as he is participating with Sarah McLachlan in a tsunami relief benefit in Vancouver on Jan. 29 at GM Place. There is a second show scheduled in Calgary on Jan. 31. I know for a fact that Luke really loves playing in Waterloo, and it sucks that he had to cancel, but it really does suck a hell of a lot more that mother nature chose to get so uppity, and we sure hope you'll understand the importance of Luke's benefit gig. Word.
Christine Fellows also participated in a similar event on Saturday Jan 8...a live concert presented by CBC Radio One on Definitely Not the Opera, hosted by Al Rae and Joe Fingerote. Besides Christine, other guests included Sean Cullen, Miriam Toews, Nathan, DJ Hunnicut and more. While she did not have to cancel a gig in Waterloo, we know that she totally would have, so they are still tied for compassion points (for those of you keeping score).
JUSTIN RUTLEDGE: NO NEVER ALONE YES CANADA IN RELEASED?
Our first release of 2005 has already been released in the UK to rave reviews. In addition to the four star reviews that appeared in NME, Uncut, and the Independent, Justin Rutledge's "No Never Alone", is hitting many of the Best Of lists of 2004, including that of the influential americana-uk.com. Finally available to home country audiences, you can check your local record store for this gem starting Feb. 8. You may want to camp out, and I mean with tents not feather boas and fishnets. Have you ever had tinned asparagus? I am not a fan. I am alluding to England by the way, they are big tinned asparagus fans over there. They just throw some tinned asparagus on some mushy peas and they're good to go. For real.
Watch for the official launch party at the Rivoli in Toronto on Feb. 17 (three days after valentine's day, so you might still score!).
UK LAUNCH
Speaking of the UK, we are thrilled that our first international release comes out Feb. 28 and it is none other than the whiskey gargling angel NQ Arbuckle's debut release, "Hanging the Battle-Scarred Piñata". Watch for our dear Nev in person in London sometime in March. He'll be the one eating tinned asparagus with smuggled maple syrup. We are really very thrilled to be kicking it in the UK...our action is itching to be recognized on a global tip, wordism.
INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY: SIX SHOOTER USA
Six Shooter Records is proud to unveil plans to launch Six Shooter USA in Fall 2005. After 5 years of Canadian releases, 4 star reviews, sold out shows and following the Winter 2005 label launch in the UK, Six Shooter is finally heading south of the border. Global takeover! Taking with us a catalogue that is critically acclaimed across the board, we have huge plans for the US offspring of our Canadian label. They will be fire breathing demon children with guitar necks for arms and hihats for heads and they can drink anyone under the table and they know the words to every awesome song ever and they eat other labels for breakfast but somehow manage to be really friendly and hot. Our US offspring that is...
What I'm trying to say is: For just five hundred US greenbacks, you can own a piece of our biznass. If you've got a few extra coins jingling in your pocket and want to invest in us, call immediately! That's less than an ipod and about a kajillion times the bragging rights!
CANNES YOU FEEL THE LUV?
With the second installment of the Six Shooter Records compilation series, this one called "More Large than Earth, We Shall Warn the Stars", Helen and Shauna head to the south of France to attend the massive Midem music conference, where the world shall surely crumble under the weight of the impressive Six Shooter catalogue. The first person to sponsor Nik to join them on the trip so he can work on his tan will receive a limited edition Six Shooter toque and all the tofu you can eat in one sitting.
RHEOSTATICS EMBED THEIR SPINES IN YOUR CEREBRUM
The Rheostatics were recently inducted into the Porcupine Awards Hall of Fame! Basically what this means is that they managed to snag a Porcupine award three years in a row. Porcupine Awards are awarded to artists who manage to dig their spiney tales of Canadian folklore into the subconscious of the general and global public. They are unscientific, bizarre, and perhaps even dubious awards, which of course makes this induction a great honour! You can read more about the Porcupine Awards right about here: www.backtothesugarcamp.com/porcupines
I bet you are all hot and bothered about wanting to see these hall-of-famers now aren't ya? Well if you live in Kingston or Ottawa you are in luck! The Rheostatics play Kingston on January 26 and 27 at the Grad Club, and then they play in Ottawa on January 29th. Bring your mitts, toques, and French-English dictionaries to the Ottawa show as it is an outdoor jobby as a part of their Winterlude Festival ...and some people speak French there?
Veal played a show in Kingston once and there were a whole lot of very drunk students in attendance. Can you imagine? Very--drunk--students...the nerve!
Oh! I almost forgot! Also stay glued to the TV. In the next couple of weeks, you should be able to witness the debut of the Rheostatics' video for The Tarleks, created by director-genius-director-repeat Justin Stephenson and starring none other than Frank Bonner, aka Herb Tarlek, himself. He is a shining beacon.
CHRIS WYNTERS IS A HUMUNGOUS STAR
Not one, but TWO of Chris Wynters' musicals are now charting in the top 20 at Broadway World Radio (http://www.broadwayworld.com/radio.cfm): "Red Lips" and "A Winter's Tale". These slammin' tracks are being broadcast via broadband...get it? Chris is so happy with the response that he is now working on his new culture-jamming musical theater mash-up entitled "A Winter's Lips", which is the tale of a young boy who encounters an unfortunate mishap while practising kissing on a metal fence post before the big dance.

CHRISTINE FELLOWS ON THE TEEVEE
Remember a few months ago when we reported that The Weakerthans had a song placed in an episode of the tv show "College Days, College Nights"? Yeah, me neither, but let me tell you, I'm sure I was super impressed at the time. Anyway, we are very pleased to announce that our very own lovely Christine Fellows has had her song 'Bird as a Prophet' placed in the third episode of the same show! Isn't that bitchin'?! I'll remember this time for sure!
NEW YEAR, NEW CONTEST!
Ok, so whoever sends us the tiniest origami swan wins a pickle on a stick. Actually, nevermind, we’ll save that contest for later. How about this, whoever can come up with the most fitting new years resolution for each of our artists will win a limited edition Six Shooter toque and something else awesome that we are still deciding on (but it will certainly be awesome).
Speaking of contests and wieners, er...winners rather, the winner of our last contest (quote 6 lyrics from the Six Shooter catalogue pertaining to winter) is none other than...Mary O'Connell! She wins herself one of the aforementioned limited Six Shooter toques and a Luke Doucet t-shirt, despite the fact that she only actually quoted two Six Shooter artists for her total of 6 quotes (Martin Tielli twice and the Rheostatics four times).
Wow, that was intense.
Beauty on,
Six Shooter Posse (on a 2005 tip)
