On top of our SOCAN goodness, we’re also pleased that Six Shooterers Whitehorse and Danny Michel have been named to the 2013 Polaris Long List! Just announced today! Congrats to them, and also to all the other fine artists who were nominated this year, including our pals Daniel Romano, Lee Harvey Osmond, Corb Lund, and tons more. You can check out the full list here:
Saturday, April 20 is Record Store Day (4/20 duuuude, Bob Marley picture disc, whuuut?), which is pretty much akin to music nerd Xmas! We love glorious vinyl, and we love independent music retailers, so we’re getting right into the spirit with an exclusive and limited RSD Whitehorse 7”! This release features two unique and unreleased versions of tracks from both the past and present. Representing the present, Side A is a live recording of “Devil’s Got A Gun,” recorded at Catherine North Studio in Hamilton, ON (where The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss was made). The recording is a rare full-band performance, featuring Derek Downham (The Beauties) on drums, Anna Ruddick (Ladies of the Canyon) on bass and Chloe Doucet-Winkelman on backing vocals and keys. Side B is Whitehorse’s current take on a past Veal classic. Remember Veal? Luke’s bitchin’ old band? We sure do! “Lipstick” brings Luke Doucet’s back-catalogue bossa nova gem back to life in humid Whitehorse fashion. The song showcases all that sweltering chemistry that has come to define Whitehorse on stage and on disc. Look for the Whitehorse 7” at a fine independent retailer near you, or stay tuned for your chance to win one of these limited edition Record Store Day exclusives.
Whitehorse‘s road to Massey Hall officially begins as The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss tour is now underway across Canada. To mark the journey, Six Shooter Records announces a new live album, The Road To Massey Hall, a celebration of the venue’s history and a tribute to those legends that have made the iconic stage their own. Leading up to their headline debut at Massey – March 2, 2013 – Whitehorse will honour the greats with a series of songs and videos highlighting those who have come to be identified with Canada’s premiere venue through memorable performances and live recordings.
The first in the series is “Un Canadien Errant,” a folk song that presents a powerful idea of homeland as that which lives in the heart rather than on a map. The song has been treasured by French-speaking Canadians from the time of the Lower Canada Rebellion onward, and it speaks to the pain of exile and displacement. “Un Canadien Errant” has appeared on albums by foundational Canadian songwriters, including Ian and Sylvia and Leonard Cohen. Luke and Melissa first performed “Un Canadien Errant” for the soundtrack to indie breakout film “One Week.” Now, as Whitehorse, they have a new appreciation for its message of nomadic yet patriotic identity.
See Whitehorse perform “Un Canadien Errant”:
All songs from The Road To Massey Hall will be available on iTunes as of February 15, 2013. As well, limited edition poster prints with digital downloads will be sold at the merchandise table during The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss tour across Canada this winter.
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Top 10 Music Picks for the week of Jan. 27, 2013
1. Whitehorse “The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss”
This Saturday marks the day we have been waiting and planning for a long time… STAFF SPA DATE!!!! Oh, and also the launch of the Whitehorse Canadian tour, which kicks off at the fantastic Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, and rides the white horse across the country to debut performances at some of the best venues in the country, such as the Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg and, OMG, Massey Hall in Toronto!!
To celebrate our excitement about this hallmark milestone on the Whitehorse journey, the prolific duo have recorded six cover songs by artists famously attached to Massey Hall, such as “Winterlong” by Neil Young, “If You Could Read My Mind” by Gordon Lightfoot, “Dark Angel” by Blue Rodeo, and more. Watch for a series of stunning and intimate (intimate as in “up close and personal”, not as in “performed in undies”) live videos we’re launching over the next month. These recordings will also be available on iTunes, and through digital downloads delivered on screen-printed posters (available at the merchandise table at Whitehorse concerts) designed by our long time pal and artistic collaborator Tyler Clark Burke.
A number of the shows are already sold out (Victoria, Calgary, Red Deer, Lethbridge) and moving fast in other cities. See below for ticket links. We’re super stoked that for the first time ever in Canada, commercial radio stations are starting to get on the horse. CBC, college radio, and CKUA have been super supportive from the beginning, and we’re pleased to add Live88.5 in Ottawa, X92.9 in Calgary, Live105 in Halifax, KIXX in Kingston, XM The Verge, and a bunch of others to the party. Stay tuned, more stations are jumping on board every week!

Hitting a number of best-of lists (such as Best Canadian Album in Popmatters, which we all know really means Best Album Everrrrr) and rave reviews in international publications such as Uncut, American Songwriter, and a host of others (including an interesting blog that actually does “rave reviews”, ie. they review records while at a RAVE! “Oontz oontz oontz oontz, this record gets 5 glow sticks out of 5, oontz oontz oontz”), Whitehorse are proving quickly that their new album “The Fate Of The World Depends On This Kiss” is certified awesome. Following our proven strategy of global conquerage, this means that we are finally ready to launch said full length recording of wonderful tunes in the glorious new world of America. Our friends living south of the border can now officially see/hear what all the fuss and ‘horse-play is about!
Jenn Grant‘s new album “The Beautiful Wild” is also being released Stateside this week, on the very fine Ba Da Bing! Records. She plans on celebrating by wearing a pair of star spangled jammer pants for a month straight following her US release date, both in patriotic solidarity with her American fans, and in the name of glorious comfort. Jenn is on tour now with Erin McKeown and getting added at tastemaker stations like KEXP and rave reviews from tastemaker publications like No Depression (They are real buds. Get it? Tastemakers? Buds? Tongue joke?), so we are off to a beautifully wild start.
Watch Jenn Grant’s video for I’ve Got Your Fire on MTV Hive here:
Both Whitehorse and Jenn Grant were touted in the Boston Globe earlier this month in the Top Ten Artists to Watch in 2013. We took this to mean that they are up to some shady business, so rest assured, we are keeping a very close eye on their activities!
Meanwhile, add your voice to the cause by voting for Six Shooter artists on CBC — Jenn Grant, Whitehorse, and Danny Michel are all charting on both CBC Radio 2 (vote here: http://music.cbc.ca/#/The-Radio-2-Top-20) and CBC Radio 3 (vote here: http://music.cbc.ca/#/blogs/2012/12/Vote-for-The-R3-30).
As noted above, Interstellar Rodeo tickets make the perfect Christmas gift, at least to those who are planning to be in Edmonton next summer (now is a good time to make that plan! Edmonton rulz, and Interstellar Rodeo double rulz!). If you live in other locales across the country, or feel the burning need to re-up your dose of Six Shooter awesomeness to tide you over until Rodeo time, then lucky for you, we have Whitehorse on a giant tour that starts on the west coast and takes them as far east as Montreal… culminating of course at Massey Hall in Toronto on March 2. Tickets for most shows are already on sale (check tour dates). Send your loved ones to Whitehorse in the new year – the fate of the world depends on that gift. And since you are clearly sitting at a computer or web-enabled smart device of some kind right now, you should also take the time to check out this awesome new live video for the single ‘Devil’s Got A Gun’!
I have certainly been known to wax poetic about the virtues of glorious vinyl, and, well, here I go again. There is really no format as awesome and tangible as a big ol’ 12” record. I love the big artwork, the smell of a freshly cracked gatefold, and the tactile experience of putting a record needle into a groove. I’m pleased as punch that turntables are easily and readily available again, it truly fills me with holiday glee (or whatever this feeling is… could be the pickled okra) to see my favorite format thriving. Given all this mushy luv for wax, you can be sure that we keep our selection of new Six Shooter vinyl current, with Jenn Grant‘s “The Beautiful Wild” and Whitehorse‘s “The Fate of the World Depends on this Kiss” available now!! To convince you about how serious we are about vinyl, and also how much we love bundles, we have more artist bundles in our specials section for both Jenn Grant and Whitehorse — pick up a copy of each of their vinyl offerings at the low price of 2 for $30. Records look great wrapped up under a Christmas tree, and you can watch as your lucky gift recipient’s face turns from fake smile to real smile when they realize it’s not a calendar!
The classic tale of musical romance continues for Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland, the husband and wife duo behind Whitehorse. One year after their debut, Whitehorse returns in ambitious fashion with The Fate of the World Depends on this Kiss and a date at Massey Hall in 2013.
The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss is everything the talented pair’s first full length promised. As a whole, the album reveals the range of creative possibility that only expands as Whitehorse develops and focuses their sound. Song by song, the record takes surprising turns; while each track confidently bears Whitehorse’s signature blistering guitar work and love-knotted vocals, their willingness to take risks and ability to pull them off makes for captivating listening.
Whitehorse’s live show is built on mesmerizing guitar work and smoldering vocal chemistry, but also brings much more to the stage with complex layers of percussion, keyboard and telephone receiver amplification, tangled like an embrace with the help of looping pedals. Their sold out Winter Garden Theatre show in February, 2012 signaled their unquestionable arrival as a band.
With savage talent and tender hearts, Whitehorse expertly plays both lion and lamb on The Fate of This World Depends on This Kiss. Six Shooter Records is proud to release this fine album on August 28, 2012.
Six Shooter artists are confirmed for several milestone shows in Toronto, including Whitehorse’s debut as headliners at Massey freakin’ Hall (March 2, 2013). As well, Jenn Grant performs with Cuff The Duke (November 24) and Danny Michel with Quique Escamilla (December 8), both on the dreamscape stage of the Winter Garden Theatre (the coolest garden around… get it?).
All of our artists will be touring heavily in the coming year, which is awesome, ‘cause we are sick of them leaving all of their gear in our office. Check out the tour dates section for details on shows near you.
We are soooo excited about Victoria Day, that we thought it would be appropriate to chuck a bunch of our artists over to her Royal Ghostness’ home turf. The Good Lovelies are tearing it up right now in the UK (don’t worry, there is more Canadian greatness to come too)! Whitehorse embarked on their own UK (and Netherlands) tour starting today! And if that wasn’t enough, we’re sending the lovely Amelia Curran over to wow the Brits in June. Now that’s what I call stuffing the chips in the haddock!
