Hypnagogia takes place somewhere between dreaming and being awake, between the night and day, between the living and the dead. Matt Gagnon is a self-taught visual artist from Ottawa. His brush strokes fall somwhere between Primitive and Figurative Abstract — similar to the works of Klee or Picasso.
Gagnon’s works are populated by wandering ghosts living in hollow buildings with empty windows. Bodies grow from the concrete and dissolve into the indefinite endings and unendings of hidden images. Faces lurk in the oil, ink and acrylic while their eyes stare you down and follow you around the room. There is a wanting and a loneliness to these figures, left to build their cities from the dust.
Gagnon’s works evolve as they are being painted. With each stroke comes a new idea until the piece is finished. In this dreamlike state, the paintings are kept raw and original and evoke something primal within the viewer.
