We are so excited to announce the full lineup for Interstellar Rodeo 2013. Check it out!
We can finally use the phrase, “This ain’t our first rodeo” when it comes to our summer festival presented by Six Shooter in Edmonton, AB! I mean, we already using that phrase for many other things, like ordering breakfast, operating a juicer, taking public transit, negotiating with terrorists, entering a sheep shearing contest, building a competitive battle robot, giving the Biebs a piggy-back ride, wearing swim goggles while chopping onions, operating a Zamboni, going to an actual rodeo, sabre fencing, that kind of stuff. BUT, specifically in reference to our totally amazing summer music festival in Edmonton, AB, NOW is the time for us to use said phrase!! So here we go, this ain’t our first (Interstellar) rodeo! The line up for Interstellar Rodeo 2013 will be announced on Tuesday! You have a nice long weekend to prepare yourself for the announcement, and then BLAMMO, we gonna hit you with a truth bomb! We are really, extremely, hella stoked about the amazing artists we have coming to Edmonton this summer, and we know you will be too! Tickets go on sale to the public on Saturday, April 6, and will be available through our webstore at www.sixshooterrecords.com, and also in person (in Edmonton) through Blackbyrd Myoozik and Permanent Records.
For those who attended last year, you will be able to get in on the pre-sale happening between April 3-5. In order to qualify, you need to create a log in on our new webstore (go to www.sixshooterrecords.com, click “store”, and then click “log in” on the top right corner). When you’re filling out the form, click the button that says “I went to Interstellar Rodeo 2012.” Please note: being on this email list does not mean you are automatically on our new webstore system. The two are separate systems. One of them is the email list system, the other is the new webstore system. Systems. Not the same. Syyyyyssssteeeem-mm-m-m-m-s. *bloop*
The festival dates this year are July 26-28, and it will once again be hosted at the lovely William Hawrelak Park amphitheatre, and the vibes will once again be glorious.
We really can’t overstate how excited we are for the return of our festival! The inaugural edition of Interstellar Rodeo was so much fun, and the overwhelmingly fantastic response we got from those who attended last year has been truly inspiring. We can’t wait to saddle up and do it even better for you all this time around! Yaaa!
In more exciting news, we are currently running victory laps around our office in celebration of Six Shooter earning two Juno Award nominations this year: one for Amelia Curran‘s “Spectators” in the category of Roots and Traditional (solo) Album of the Year, and the other for Danny Michel‘s “Black Birds are Dancing Over Me” in the category of World Music Album of the Year. I can already taste the victory, and it tastes like blooooood! The Juno Awards are being held in the city of Regina this year on the weekend of April 19-21.
Watch out for the now annual Outlaws and Gunslingers show during Junofest, held on Friday, April 19 at the Exchange, featuring Danny, Amelia, and at least a million other great artists in town for the festivities. I’m not sure if I’ve ever actually clarified this, but just to set your mind at ease, Outlaws and Gunslingers is just a wicked cool name we came up with…in fact, we ripped it off of an NQ Arbuckle song. We are actually friendly Canadians, and none of the artists who are performing are actually outlaws or gunslingers, in fact most of them have never even shoplifted a string cheese from the gas station or anything. For that matter, we think guns are kinda scary, and would probably kinda poop our pants if we ever came in contact with an actual six shooter! The secret is out, we are just big ol’ sweeties with hearts of gold, awwwww!! OR ARE WE?! Pew-pew-pew! (gun noise).
Saturday, April 20 is Record Store Day (4/20 duuuude, Bob Marley picture disc, whuuut?), which is pretty much akin to music nerd Xmas! We love glorious vinyl, and we love independent music retailers, so we’re getting right into the spirit with an exclusive and limited RSD Whitehorse 7”! This release features two unique and unreleased versions of tracks from both the past and present. Representing the present, Side A is a live recording of “Devil’s Got A Gun,” recorded at Catherine North Studio in Hamilton, ON (where The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss was made). The recording is a rare full-band performance, featuring Derek Downham (The Beauties) on drums, Anna Ruddick (Ladies of the Canyon) on bass and Chloe Doucet-Winkelman on backing vocals and keys. Side B is Whitehorse’s current take on a past Veal classic. Remember Veal? Luke’s bitchin’ old band? We sure do! “Lipstick” brings Luke Doucet’s back-catalogue bossa nova gem back to life in humid Whitehorse fashion. The song showcases all that sweltering chemistry that has come to define Whitehorse on stage and on disc. Look for the Whitehorse 7” at a fine independent retailer near you, or stay tuned for your chance to win one of these limited edition Record Store Day exclusives.
Warm up with this beautiful video of Jenn Grant performing “I’ve Got Your Fire.” It’s a keeper!
Interstellar Rodeo returns for its sophomore year with a big name at the top of the 2013 bill. The Alabama Shakes, purveyors of raucous southern soul powered by the force of nature that is lead singer Brittany Howard, are confirmed to play Interstellar Rodeo’s stage this year. The band’s acclaimed debut album, Boys & Girls, included “Hold On,” named Rolling Stone’s Best Song of 2012. With multiple Grammy nominations already to their name, this relatively young band’s meteoric rise is built on knockout performances and true blue talent. Interstellar Rodeo is excited to announce the Alabama Shakes as one of this year’s headliners.
Stay tuned for Interstellar Rodeo’s full musical lineup announcement later this month. The festival takes place in Edmonton’s beautiful Hawrelak Park, July 26-28, 2013.
Whitehorse‘s road to Massey Hall officially begins as The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss tour is now underway across Canada. To mark the journey, Six Shooter Records announces a new live album, The Road To Massey Hall, a celebration of the venue’s history and a tribute to those legends that have made the iconic stage their own. Leading up to their headline debut at Massey – March 2, 2013 – Whitehorse will honour the greats with a series of songs and videos highlighting those who have come to be identified with Canada’s premiere venue through memorable performances and live recordings.
The first in the series is “Un Canadien Errant,” a folk song that presents a powerful idea of homeland as that which lives in the heart rather than on a map. The song has been treasured by French-speaking Canadians from the time of the Lower Canada Rebellion onward, and it speaks to the pain of exile and displacement. “Un Canadien Errant” has appeared on albums by foundational Canadian songwriters, including Ian and Sylvia and Leonard Cohen. Luke and Melissa first performed “Un Canadien Errant” for the soundtrack to indie breakout film “One Week.” Now, as Whitehorse, they have a new appreciation for its message of nomadic yet patriotic identity.
See Whitehorse perform “Un Canadien Errant”:
All songs from The Road To Massey Hall will be available on iTunes as of February 15, 2013. As well, limited edition poster prints with digital downloads will be sold at the merchandise table during The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss tour across Canada this winter.
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Top 10 Music Picks for the week of Jan. 27, 2013
1. Whitehorse “The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss”
This Saturday marks the day we have been waiting and planning for a long time… STAFF SPA DATE!!!! Oh, and also the launch of the Whitehorse Canadian tour, which kicks off at the fantastic Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, and rides the white horse across the country to debut performances at some of the best venues in the country, such as the Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg and, OMG, Massey Hall in Toronto!!
To celebrate our excitement about this hallmark milestone on the Whitehorse journey, the prolific duo have recorded six cover songs by artists famously attached to Massey Hall, such as “Winterlong” by Neil Young, “If You Could Read My Mind” by Gordon Lightfoot, “Dark Angel” by Blue Rodeo, and more. Watch for a series of stunning and intimate (intimate as in “up close and personal”, not as in “performed in undies”) live videos we’re launching over the next month. These recordings will also be available on iTunes, and through digital downloads delivered on screen-printed posters (available at the merchandise table at Whitehorse concerts) designed by our long time pal and artistic collaborator Tyler Clark Burke.
A number of the shows are already sold out (Victoria, Calgary, Red Deer, Lethbridge) and moving fast in other cities. See below for ticket links. We’re super stoked that for the first time ever in Canada, commercial radio stations are starting to get on the horse. CBC, college radio, and CKUA have been super supportive from the beginning, and we’re pleased to add Live88.5 in Ottawa, X92.9 in Calgary, Live105 in Halifax, KIXX in Kingston, XM The Verge, and a bunch of others to the party. Stay tuned, more stations are jumping on board every week!
While our aforementioned artists have their sights set on North America, Amelia Curran is taking a different, and dare I say fancier, approach, as she heads off to European shores for a month long tour! Wearing a Yorkshire pudding as a hat, and carrying a satchel of woorstenbroodje to hand out to children, Amelia will make her way across Scotland, England, the Netherlands, and the especially Curran-hungry land of ire known as Ireland. This epic journey will herald in the European release of Amelia’s excellent album, “Spectators”, which comes out this month on Germany’s Blue Rose Records! See the video for Amelia’s song, “Black Bird On Fire” here:
If you went to Interstellar Rodeo last year and want to make sure you get first dibs on tickets for 2013, then you’ll need to pre-register for the pre-sale (if you haven’t done this already). Our webstore, located at www.sixshooterrecords.com has a new system. You’ll need to create an account (sorry, I know we have your email address here and all, but we couldn’t afford the IT bill that it would have taken to integrate the two systems). When you create your account (by hitting the little “login” button on the top right), click the box “I attended Interstellar Rodeo 2012.” Watch for the line up and ticket announcement in March!
Jenn Grant’s new video for I’ve Got Your Fire is here just in time to celebrate her 3 ECMA nominations
