AMELIA CURRAN’S NEW ALBUM, SPECTATORS, CONFIRMED FOR RELEASE OCTOBER 2, 2012.
From the fathoms, the dark solitary deeps, comes Amelia Curran’s Spectators, a new album set for release on October 2, 2012 on Six Shooter Records. A meditation on frailty, restlessness, time and its finitudes, Spectators is both storm and harbour.
The Juno winning artist has charted a course through longing and loss with lyrics that face life’s beauties and terrors with disconsolate urgency. With Spectators, Curran returns to the scene with ten tracks that yet raise the bar on her signature lyricism, but push beyond the folk boundaries that have defined her previous releases.
Produced by John Critchley, Spectators brings surprises, including brass, strings, piano, and rumbling percussion. “What Will You Be Building,” a downtrodden Dixieland dirge, distills existence into one essential question. “The Modern Man” is another standout track – Curran’s stark vision stands sharply against a dark, tense, shivering backdrop. Even, or perhaps especially, the love songs, cut through the bone. In particular, the earthquake heartache of “San Andreas Fault,” is as graceful as it is devastating.
The opening track, “Years,” strides forward with a dynamic deliberation undercut by repeated speculation about all the trouble’s worth. Ever cautious in her optimism, “Years” introduces the record’s measured truths in fine fashion.
Guest musicians and arrangers are a collection of Toronto and St. John’s notables, including The Once, Todor Kobakov, Bryden Baird, Selina Martin, Oh Susanna, and Martin Tielli.
Six Shooter Records is proud to release Spectators on October 2, 2012.

The classic tale of musical romance continues for Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland, the husband and wife duo behind Whitehorse. One year after their debut, Whitehorse returns in ambitious fashion with The Fate of the World Depends on this Kiss and a date at Massey Hall in 2013.
The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss is everything the talented pair’s first full length promised. As a whole, the album reveals the range of creative possibility that only expands as Whitehorse develops and focuses their sound. Song by song, the record takes surprising turns; while each track confidently bears Whitehorse’s signature blistering guitar work and love-knotted vocals, their willingness to take risks and ability to pull them off makes for captivating listening.
Whitehorse’s live show is built on mesmerizing guitar work and smoldering vocal chemistry, but also brings much more to the stage with complex layers of percussion, keyboard and telephone receiver amplification, tangled like an embrace with the help of looping pedals. Their sold out Winter Garden Theatre show in February, 2012 signaled their unquestionable arrival as a band.
With savage talent and tender hearts, Whitehorse expertly plays both lion and lamb on The Fate of This World Depends on This Kiss. Six Shooter Records is proud to release this fine album on August 28, 2012.
The honeymoon continues for East Coast nightingale Jenn Grant, who is set to release her third album on Six Shooter Records on September 25, 2012. With The Beautiful Wild, Jenn follows love’s twisted, tangled path deep into the heart’s jungle. The new record is about finding the courage to lose oneself in the wilderness, in all of its savage and sublime experiences.
The dense, exotic sounds of The Beautiful Wild depart from the giddy blush of Honeymoon Punch, Jenn Grant’s Juno Nominated and Polaris Long Listed previous album. There is a mature solemnity to be found that creates a new intimacy and immediacy with the listener. Jenn Grant’s intuitive ability to express emotion has helped to define her as one of Canada’s premiere vocalists; even in the darkest corners of the wilderness, her prismatic, iridescent voice continues to sparkle, dancing over adventurous new layers that include harp, flute and sitar.
Jenn Grant is a lively member of a thriving East Coast artist community. The Beautiful Wild features many notable locals, including Old Man Luedecke, Rose Cousins, Erin Costello, Kinley Dowling, David Christiansen and the Halifax Boys’ Honour Choir.
Jenn Grant will tour with Kathleen Edwards and as a co-bill with Cuff The Duke this Fall, 2012. In between Canadian dates, Jenn will be touring in Australia, Germany and Japan.
Lose yourself in The Beautiful Wild, out on Six Shooter Records on September 25, 2012.
Six Shooter artists are confirmed for several milestone shows in Toronto, including Whitehorse’s debut as headliners at Massey freakin’ Hall (March 2, 2013). As well, Jenn Grant performs with Cuff The Duke (November 24) and Danny Michel with Quique Escamilla (December 8), both on the dreamscape stage of the Winter Garden Theatre (the coolest garden around… get it?).
All of our artists will be touring heavily in the coming year, which is awesome, ‘cause we are sick of them leaving all of their gear in our office. Check out the tour dates section for details on shows near you.
It’s been more than a year since we released “The Place I Left Behind”, which continues to receive accolades all over the world. The most recent acknowledgement comes from the Americana Music Association, who has offered the Deep Dark Woods a giant feast in their honor. Oh wait, that’s meant to say nom, not NOM. The straight details are actually that the Americana Music Association named the Deep Dark Woods as a nominee in the category of Emerging Artist at their esteemed awards show! We’re pleased that the DDWs will be playing the Americana Music Awards on Sept 12 in Nashville, one of our favourite events of the year.
Well, the Interstellar Rodeo was just awesome. Straight up, it was an amazing weekend. Thanks to everyone for all the wonderful feedback on our inaugural year. We loved reading through all the audience surveys, emails, facebook posts and random hugs where we learned how much you loved the music, the wine, the beer, the weather, the food, and the vibe. Thank you to the artists who brought the house down, set after set.
Thank you so much to our sponsors (FACTOR, The Edmonton Journal, Big Rock Brewery, CKUA, Lite/Hot, The Westin, and Steinway). Also, a thousand shout outs to our fabulous volunteers. And, most of all, thanks to the people who came out to the show!! We’re gearing up to do it all again next year! For those returning patrons coming next year, we are working on a way for you to be able to renew your tickets. Stay tuned to this newsletter for more details as soon as we have them (and please tell your concert-going friends to sign up through the Six Shooter Records website). Edmonton! We did it!

Danny Michel, multiple Juno Award nominee, treasured songwriter, David Suzuki-approved green strummer and quiet do-gooder, comes to Six Shooter Records as a longtime All Time label favourite.
Danny’s new album, his 10th, Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me, dives into the waves of Belize’s musical deep, featuring Maya guitar, turtle shells, donkey jaw-bone, and traditional Garifuna segunda & primero drums. The album cultivates lush rhythms and sounds, the perfect backdrop for Michel’s eloquently buoyant songwriting style. To make the record, Danny relocated from the Golden Horseshoe to the the foot of the Xunantunich mayan ruins in Benque Viejo del Carmen. There, he teamed up with members of the Garifuna Collective, The Benque Players, and pioneering producer Ivan Duran at Stonetree Records, a label/studio that has been instrumental in bringing the Belizean sound to the world.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, Danny founded the DM Ocean Academy Fund to provide scholarship money for students of the Caye Culker Ocean Academy, the very first high school on Caye Caulker, a coral island off the coast of Belize. With the help of fan-sourcing, Danny reached his goal, raising more than $30,000 in the first year. Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me saturates Danny’s wholehearted imagery in a rich tropical palette, and shows unreserved artistic commitment to the experience. Six Shooter Records is proud to release Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me on September 18, 2012.
You do know that we are putting on a huge and awesome music festival, in the beautiful city of Edmonton, right?! We are getting pretty damn excited for The Interstellar Rodeo, which is a mere three weeks away, and we’ve got a lot of news to share with you:
CHECK OUT THE DELICIOUS WINES WE HAVE IN STORE FOR YOU!
Yup, that is a real headline. We have always enjoyed pairing music with delicious boooooze here in Six Shooter land, and for our very own music festival, we figured that we might as well get klassy wit’ it!
And so, we are so very pleased to have Gurvinder Bathia, Edmonton’s resident wine expert purveyor, on our Interstellar team. He has sourced the most amazing wines for you to, pairing each concert set at the festival with the perfect wine to complement the music. Check out this example:
De Angelis Rosso Piceno, Marche Italy
If you haven’t heard of Alejandro Escovedo then you need to grab yourself a glass of Rosso Piceno and a listen and discover why this underground punk and roots rock sensation has built such a mainstream following. Similarly, one taste and there’s no denying the appeal of this smoky, meaty, juicy wine from Italy’s rural Marche region. Both Escovedo and De Angelis owner Quinto Fausti are comfortable avoiding the spotlight, but their respective talents and reputations keep threatening to drag them out from the underground.
See the rest of the wine specials at http://www.interstellarrodeo.com.
It’s a good thing Gurvinder is on the job, because I tried writing my own pairing for myself, and it didn’t go nearly as well:
Newsletter Writing Monkey
Whatever Is Cheap, Probably Australia
If you haven’t heard of the monkey who writes this newsletter, then you need to grab yourself a glass of something cheap and hope it gets you drunk before you discover why bad puns have not built a mainstream following. Similarly, one taste and there’s no denying the appeal of a low price when it comes to thin, uninteresting wine from the “probably Australia” region. Both the newsletter writing monkey, and the pimply teen working at that cheap liquor store are (by default) comfortable drinking this swill, watching their talents and reputations go to waste as they get dragged to the underground.
ANNOUNCING FIVE GREAT FOOD TRUCKS
We’re totally stoked to have five amazing gourmet food trucks on board at the Interstellar Rodeo to keep you fully satiated. Edmonton’s food truck scene has really gone nutso lately, and we picked out some of our faves to keep you fed and caffeinated during your life-changing Interstellar Rodeo experience! They are: Drift Food Truck, Eva Sweet, The Act, Transcend Coffee, and one other one, yet to be announced. Anyone who has spent time around me knows that I complain pretty much daily about having eaten too much and having drank too much coffee (first world problems, I know), and I can tell you already that Interstellar Rodeo will be no different.
