INTERSTELLAR RODEO EDMONTON’S 2016 LINEUP: THE FUTURE OF MUSIC IS NOW. COUNTRY NOIR, EPIC INDIE, CALIFORNIA SOUL, REBEL ROCKERS AND MORE COMING TO FIFTH ANNIVERSARY #iRodeoYEG JULY 22-24, 2016.

Interstellar Rodeo Edmonton announces its 2016 lineup today, unveiling a bill that brings distinguished, daring and dauntless talents to the stage for the festival’s fifth anniversary. Interstellar Rodeo has made its mark presenting an innovative mix of performers across genres, with a core emphasis on those making waves in the roots and Americana world.

Interstellar Rodeo takes great pride in the ‘Discovery’ aspect of its music programming. “Every year people tell me they find their new favourite artists on our stage,” says festival producer Shauna de Cartier. “Edmontonians have a voracious appetite for new music, and it’s a delight to feed that passion by introducing the city to artists they didn’t know existed until they play Interstellar Rodeo.”

Interstellar Rodeo’s programming ear is also tuned in to the airwaves, and this year’s lineup – the most youthful to date – brings the dial to life with artists who have made an impact at radio. Sam Roberts Band, Lord Huron and Kathleen Edwards all fit this profile: talented artists who have broken through with hit songs that connect with listeners in profound and lasting ways.

This year’s #iRodeo features five performers who will make their Edmonton debuts: red-hot, tough-as-nails honky-tonker Margo Price, Grammy winning soul sensation Andra Day, Adia Victoria, described by Rolling Stone as “PJ Harvey covering Loretta Lynn at a haunted debutante ball,” Swedish Grammy winner Jose Gonzalez, and Fantastic Negrito, a California blues rocker with an incredible comeback story.

Festival producers Six Shooter Records continues to grow as a label, and the 2016 Interstellar lineup boasts Six Shooter artists reaching new heights of radio play, commercial success and awards. Six Shooter is proud to bring The Strumbellas and Whitehorse, both Juno Award winners, to the stage this year. Six Shooter’s Sam Outlaw, a California artist at the vanguard of the exciting changes in country music, also joins the 2016 #iRodeoYEG bill.

The concept behind the event elevates the summer music festival experience with artist wine pairings, gourmet food offerings, and the return of the Interstellar Marketplace (launched last year), which showcases local fine arts and artisans.

Interstellar Rodeo Edmonton weekend passes go on sale Saturday, April 30 @ 8am MST. Tickets and festival details at www.interstellarrodeo.com

SAM ROBERTS BAND (Montreal, QC) – Roberts has won Junos and topped charts, played the late night circuit and appeared on the biggest festival lineups in North America. The group released Lo-Fantasy in 2015.

THE STRUMBELLAS (Lindsay, ON) – With a vivid, alternative rock sound front and centre on the new album Hope, The Strumbellas are one of the biggest international breakout acts of 2016.

WHITEHORSE (Toronto, ON) – Recent Juno-winning roots noir duo with an innovative approach and an intense chemistry. Whitehorse’s desert surf sensibility is distinguished by guitar wizardry and magnetic harmonies.

AMERICAN SONGWRITER DEBUTS WHITEHORSE’S NEW VIDEO “NADINE” + PRE-ORDER AVAILABLE NOW.

The blues might not be the first place you’d expect to find Whitehorse – noted roots noir slingers – at work, but as told to American Songwriter, the project brings Luke Doucet both back to his formative years in Winnipeg: “‘Nadine’ is a song I played with my father when I was a teenager still trying to understand the basics of rock and roll. This track is the most paradoxical of all the reinterpretations on this record – the drum machine sounds pretty foreign against the lyric and the blues chords. In our minds, these disparate elements go together really well. We hear them in music all around us, if not delivered in songs written in the 50s…Ironically, there’s not much Chuck in the guitars. I leaned on Hendrix to bridge the gaps, as many have done before me. The two vocals, delivering a PJ Harvey-inspired take on the melody, makes the story darker than Chuck’s original lyric intended.”

Whitehorse’s version of “Nadine” is shadowy and ominous, the result of the duo’s orbit around more sinister matter. “Poor Nadine can’t seem to lose this guy. We wonder if maybe there’s a bit of a dark side to this story, so we aim to bring that out in the music,” McClelland notes to American Songwriter.

The release of The Northern South Vol. 1 comes hot on the heels of a big weekend at the Junos in Calgary, where they won Adult Alternative Album of the Year for Leave No Bridge Unburned and put in a thermogenic performance of “Tame as the Wild Ones” on the televised broadcast.

The Northern South Vol. 1 is now available for pre-order on iTunes & Google Play. You can stream Pretty Thing & My Babe on Spotify today.

A PIECE OF THE CONTINENT, A PART OF THE MAIN: DANNY MICHEL ANNOUNCES MATADORA, COMING APRIL 8, 2016 ON SIX SHOOTER RECORDS.

twitter

Danny Michel, environmentalist, pacifist, romanticist, archivist and space enthusiast, returns with Matadora, his newest and most deeply humanist album to date. As a whole, the ten-song collection explores themes of individual and collective agency, and wills us to find hope in grief, tolerance in violence, and love in hate.

After the musical village approach involved in making an album in Belize, Matadora’s origin is a different sort of island, self-produced, recorded and mixed all by Michel in his home studio in Waterloo, Ontario. Matadora tempers the tropical escapism of the Juno-nominated Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me with a dose of harsher realities – breaking news, loneliness, laundry – all delivered tenderly with Michel’s signature empathy.

In place of Black Birds’ balmy clime, the warmth of Matadora comes from within, as materially present as breath that condenses on a window. This body-generated steaminess is front and centre on “Get Lost,” a knee-weakening soliloquy with a slow jam beat.

Matadora has two types of love letters, those meant just for one and those addressed to all. The song “Click Click” is one part dream sequence, one part political platform – as passionate as “Get Lost” but on a much larger scale. “Click Click” shows Michel’s mastery of exploring big questions in small details; he confronts tragedy and violence with delicacy and grace.

There are also a handful of songs that taste of ocean and carry forward the vibe and instrumentation from Black Birds in breezy fashion. Title track “Matadora,” “Paris Las Vegas,” and “Good Old Days” provide a bridge from Michel’s previous release, one that consumed two years from recording to the final sold out stop on the North American tour he did with The Garifuna Collective.

On Matadora, Michel’s red flag waves as an open-ended question posed in the title track: Are we all the bull on beaten days, or are we the matadora in many ways?

Six Shooter Records will release Matadora on April 8, 2016.
Pre-Order Matadora on CD and Vinyl here. Pre-Order the album on iTunes and Google Play on March 25.

ABOUT DANNY MICHEL:

With nominations for three JUNO Awards, The Polaris Prize, The CBC’s “Heart Of Gold” and a pile of albums under his belt, Danny Michel is unquestionably one of Canada’s finest songwriters. His thoughtful lyrics and earnest performances have earned him a devoted fan base. Michel is a musical chameleon, able to slip into many genres with ease.

Past critics have praised Danny’s lyrics for having “something to say” without coming off preachy. His environmental song “Feather Fur & Fin,” landed on both CBC’s “Global Goals Playlist” & David Suzuki’s “Playlist For The Planet”. Other songs ask big questions like “If God’s on your side, then who’s on mine” and “Who’s gonna miss you when you’re gone?” a song which explores karma asking “Did you live it right or did you live it wrong?”

In 2011 Danny relocated to Belize and founded the “Danny Michel Ocean Academy” to help raise scholarships for small non-profit community high school. To date he’s raised over $70,000.00 for the school, and he volunteers there whenever he can.

For his most recent release, he tracked down one of his favourite bands, The Garifuna Collective, a unique Afro-Amerindian cultural group and convinced them to make an album together. That album, Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me, was quoted as “One of the finest musical works of our time,” by Billboard’s Larry Leblanc. The album landed him a 3rd JUNO nomination (this time in the “World Music” category) and a sold out summer tour of North America with The Garifuna Collective.

Now, four years later, Michel returns with Matadora, an album that promotes Michel’s particular humanism, a message of peace and love and stardust.

WHITEHORSE OFFERS NEW SINGLE, PRETTY THING, FROM UPCOMING EP.

pretty thing

Download it on iTunes here.

On The Northern South, Vol. 1, coming May 6, 2016, Whitehorse inhabits the kitchens and Cadillacs of Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, Howlin’ Wolf and others in their homage to one of the most important addresses in music, 2120 S. Michigan Avenue circa 1960, and the astonishing catalogues of Chess and Checker Records.

“Pretty Thing,” the second song to be revealed from Whitehorse’s new collection, was originally written by Willie Dixon in 1955, made famous by Bo Diddley (the ‘Bo Diddley beat’ was the backbone of the song “Downtown” from Leave No Bridge Unburned).

On “Pretty Thing,” Whitehorse plays the guitar solo in unison but in different octaves. Melissa McClelland is playing the light and snappy Shyboy Telecaster (made by Toronto builder Brad Keogan) though a GA18. The guitar is blend of 1950’s stye pickups and electronics, with a rosewood fretboard that started to appear on Fenders in 1959 and was ubiquitous through the 1960s. Harmonica pass by Luke Doucet.

The Northern South Vol. 1 will be available on May, 2016 worldwide.
