As a paperless program, the free app is part of Interstellar Rodeo’s efforts to reduce the festival’s environmental footprint. On this front, Interstellar Rodeo announces a new eco initiative – festival crew, artists, and backstage hospitality will be provided with refillable bottles this year in an effort to dramatically reduce the use of plastic water bottles. This is a significant first step in decreasing our overall environmental impact.

Audiences are also encouraged to bring their own refillable bottles, as there will be plenty of free water stations throughout the site.

Also new this year will be AFTER INTERSTELLAR, an official festival after-party happening 10pm-2am on Saturday, August 13 in the newly renovated Food Hall at The Forks Market. There will be wine and food samplings and performances by Duotang and DJ Co-Op. After Interstellar is presented by Winnipeg Wine Cru. For tickets, visit www.interstellarrodeo.com. Tickets are available to the general public, but #iRodeoWPG weekend pass holders receive a 20% discount.

SAM OUTLAW CROSSES OVER FOR ATLANTIC-SIDE SHOWS THIS JUNE.

California country artist Sam Outlaw makes a rare trip to the Atlantic side of the country with upcoming shows down the Eastern Seaboard this June.

Outlaw continues to tour Angeleno, a debut record that has shown impressive legs by supporting multiple headline jaunts across the USA and the UK and Europe since its release in 2015. Angeleno’s stamina comes from its depth and variety, and all the ways Outlaw can make it hurt. It’s easy listening, but hard hitting.

Music critic Jeff Weiss recently profiled Outlaw for LA Weekly in advance of his performance at Stagecoach Festival, the perfect setting for Outlaw’s SoCal country sound that has also earned Nashville’s attention. As Weiss writes, “Angeleno made him a legitimate contender to be the biggest country star L.A. has produced since Dwight Yoakam.” Brooklyn Vegan also included Outlaw in their Stagecoach spotlight.

SONGWRITERS, SHAPESHIFTERS & UP AND COMERS: INTERSTELLAR RODEO ANNOUNCES THIS YEAR’S INTERLUDE PERFORMERS WITH STRONG ALBERTA REPRESENTATION.

Interstellar Rodeo announces the 2016 Interludes, over 50% Albertan in origin (and 100% excellent from top to bottom).

The Interlude performers work in, and in between, genres ranging from glammy-country to trippy-spirit-folk to neo-soul and swaggering-rock n’ roll.

This year’s Interludes also draws a direct line to Edmonton’s sister city, Nashville, TN. The gold-dipped outlaw country of Australia’s Henry Wagons makes a return to the stage (his band, Wagons, has been a crowd favourite in years past). Donovan Woods and Calgary’s country newcomer Sykamore also have professional ties to Music City, a testament to the outstanding quality of each artist’s songwriting.

These Interludes also showcase homegrown talent that has received international stamps of approval, with Faith Healer’s Pitchfork-approved psychedelic-folk and Nuela Charles’ mix of pop, jazz, soul and hip-hop, which has impressed the discerning ears at KCRW, LA’s powerhouse radio station.

Joe Nolan, a frequent traveler up and down Alberta Highway #2, returns to the Amphitheatre stage with his raw and emotional songwriting, and finally Calgary’s Copperhead, bringers of “rusty-edged rock,” will make the trip up for their Interstellar debut.

INTERSTELLAR RODEO 2016 INTERLUDE ARTISTS:

DONOVAN WOODS
FAITH HEALER
JOE NOLAN
HENRY WAGONS
SYKAMORE
NUELA CHARLES
COPPERHEAD

SINGLE TICKETS WILL BE ON SALE THURSDAY, MAY 19 @ 10am MT. Visit www.interstellarrodeo.com for details + purchase.

PERFORMER BIOS:

COPPERHEAD (AB)
Calgary’s Coppherhead is a four-piece band gathering buzz for their blues heart and rock ‘n’ roll soul. Copperhead blazed on to the scene in 2014, winning the Calgary Folk Festival songwriting contest with their blend of dark, throaty Motown, swaggering rock & roll and folk with a rusty edge. The group consists of Liz Stevens (vocals, keys), Kirill Telichev (guitar), Amos Bradley (bass), and Kane Bender (drums). Copperhead released their debut self-titled EP in September 2015.

DONOVAN WOODS (ON)
Donovan Woods is a Juno Award-nominated singer-songwriter from Sarnia, ON with strong Nashville ties (Tim McGraw recorded one of his songs) and big critical acclaim for his most recent album, Hard Settle, Ain’t Troubled. Like with so many songwriters of note, what matters isn’t what you call it, or where it comes from, but the stories you tell, and the voice you use. Whether about big ideas or seemingly minor incidents, broken promises or the promise of romance, Woods’ stories affect listeners deeply.

FAITH HEALER (solo) (AB)
Edmonton’s Faith Healer (Jessica Jalbert) has absorbed a steady diet of psychedelic rock from the 60s and 70s and created a sound soaked in sunsunny trippiness, thunderous fuzz and classic pop harmonies with Cosmic Troubles, her debut LP. Cosmic Troubles has received generous acclaim from major corners including Pitchfork, Stereogum, and Spin. Jalbert will begin recording a follow-up to Cosmic Troubles this fall, looking towards a new album in early 2017.

HENRY WAGONS (AUS)
Australia’s Henry Wagons is a true renaissance man, drawing on a broad-ranging swag of influences, from the bluster of sweaty jumpsuit era Elvis to the somber, drunken malaise of Lee Hazelwood, and from the tenderness of Roy Orbison to the menace of Nick Cave. After many years fronting the floor-fracturing outlaw band Wagons, Henry released his first ever full-length solo album entitled After What I Did Last Night… in 2016.

JOE NOLAN (AB)
While it’s not every day that a songwriter makes it from the shadows of open mic nights to the high wattage, real deal scene, Joe Nolan’s old soul lyrics and striking vocals suggest that the odds of breaking through are in his favour. His most recent album, the WCMA-nominated Tornado (released by Six Shooter Records), showcases Joe’s lyrical style – intense, evocative and gripping.

NUELA CHARLES (AB)
Edmonton’s Nuela Charles released her debut album Aware in late 2012, and it went on to be the very first recipient of the inaugural Edmonton Music Prize in 2013. Saxy and sexy, songs from this debut have found fans at powerhouse radio station KCRW in LA, and have found homes on TV networks across the USA. Be it hip-hop, pop, jazz, R&B or soul, Nuela Charles captures the spirit and confidence of them all.

SYKAMORE (AB)
Calgary’s Sykamore is a brand new face on the country scene, a statement confirmed by her recent nomination for the Canadian Country Music Awards ‘Discovery’ Award and the fact that she now spends half her time in Nashville, TN. Known for her strong songwriting, Sykamore has been grabbing attention with her recent material, which recently netted first prize in the All-Alberta Songwriting Contest.

COUNTRY SENSATION + RADIO DOMINATION: INTERSTELLAR RODEO WINNIPEG ADDS MARGO PRICE AND WINTERSLEEP TO THE BILL. LOCAL TALENT SHINES BRIGHT IN THIS YEAR’S INTERLUDE LINEUP.

Screen Shot 2016-05-05 at 9.41.54 AM

Winnipeg is already buzzing about this year’s Interstellar Rodeo lineup, and now the festival announces two more major lineup additions: MARGO PRICE and WINTERSLEEP, as well as this year’s Interlude performers.

Songbird. Thunderbird. Jailbird: Margo Price is one of the biggest stories in country music this year, with a new album, Midwest Farmer’s Daughter, out on Third Man Records now, a recent performance on SNL and a history-making highest chart debut by any solo female artist. Price will play Winnipeg for the very first time on the Interstellar Rodeo stage.

Wintersleep is burning up the radio charts with “Amerika,” a new #1 single described by the Wall St. Journal as, “a big, bold song, revolving like a slow-motion tornado around huge guitars.” Wintersleep is a Juno-winning rock band from Halifax, NS that has performed on Letterman, among other triumphs.

This year’s Interludes include a number of incredible Winnipeg artists, including Begonia (a new solo project from Chic Gamine’s Alexa Dirks), electric Americana band Blond(e) Goth, Juno-nominee Del Barber and cowboy-meets-hip hop poet Leonard Sumner. The Interlude lineup is the place to look for new talent bubbling up in Western Canada: in addition to the homegrown faces, this year welcomes confessional songwriter Joe Nolan and country newcomer Sykamore both from Alberta. Toronto’s roots stalwarts NQ Arbuckle and piano boogie wizard, France’s Henri Hebert, will also perform.

INTERSTELLAR RODEO WINNIPEG 2016 INTERLUDE PERFORMERS:

NQ ARBUCKLE
DEL BARBER
JOE NOLAN
HENRI HERBERT
BEGONIA
LEONARD SUMNER
BLOND(E) GOTH
SYKAMORE
Interstellar Rodeo weekend passes are on sale now. Early Bird pricing will be in effect until single tickets are made available. Visit www.interstellarrodeo.com for details and purchase.

INTERSTELLAR RODEO EDMONTON’S 2016 LINEUP: THE FUTURE OF MUSIC IS NOW. COUNTRY NOIR, EPIC INDIE, CALIFORNIA SOUL, REBEL ROCKERS AND MORE COMING TO FIFTH ANNIVERSARY #iRodeoYEG JULY 22-24, 2016.

Interstellar Rodeo Edmonton announces its 2016 lineup today, unveiling a bill that brings distinguished, daring and dauntless talents to the stage for the festival’s fifth anniversary. Interstellar Rodeo has made its mark presenting an innovative mix of performers across genres, with a core emphasis on those making waves in the roots and Americana world.

Interstellar Rodeo takes great pride in the ‘Discovery’ aspect of its music programming. “Every year people tell me they find their new favourite artists on our stage,” says festival producer Shauna de Cartier. “Edmontonians have a voracious appetite for new music, and it’s a delight to feed that passion by introducing the city to artists they didn’t know existed until they play Interstellar Rodeo.”

Interstellar Rodeo’s programming ear is also tuned in to the airwaves, and this year’s lineup – the most youthful to date – brings the dial to life with artists who have made an impact at radio. Sam Roberts Band, Lord Huron and Kathleen Edwards all fit this profile: talented artists who have broken through with hit songs that connect with listeners in profound and lasting ways.

This year’s #iRodeo features five performers who will make their Edmonton debuts: red-hot, tough-as-nails honky-tonker Margo Price, Grammy winning soul sensation Andra Day, Adia Victoria, described by Rolling Stone as “PJ Harvey covering Loretta Lynn at a haunted debutante ball,” Swedish Grammy winner Jose Gonzalez, and Fantastic Negrito, a California blues rocker with an incredible comeback story.

Festival producers Six Shooter Records continues to grow as a label, and the 2016 Interstellar lineup boasts Six Shooter artists reaching new heights of radio play, commercial success and awards. Six Shooter is proud to bring The Strumbellas and Whitehorse, both Juno Award winners, to the stage this year. Six Shooter’s Sam Outlaw, a California artist at the vanguard of the exciting changes in country music, also joins the 2016 #iRodeoYEG bill.

The concept behind the event elevates the summer music festival experience with artist wine pairings, gourmet food offerings, and the return of the Interstellar Marketplace (launched last year), which showcases local fine arts and artisans.

Interstellar Rodeo Edmonton weekend passes go on sale Saturday, April 30 @ 8am MST. Tickets and festival details at www.interstellarrodeo.com

THE STRUMBELLAS (Lindsay, ON) – With a vivid, alternative rock sound front and centre on the new album Hope, The Strumbellas are one of the biggest international breakout acts of 2016.

WHITEHORSE (Toronto, ON) – Recent Juno-winning roots noir duo with an innovative approach and an intense chemistry. Whitehorse’s desert surf sensibility is distinguished by guitar wizardry and magnetic harmonies.

AMERICAN SONGWRITER DEBUTS WHITEHORSE’S NEW VIDEO “NADINE” + PRE-ORDER AVAILABLE NOW.

The blues might not be the first place you’d expect to find Whitehorse – noted roots noir slingers – at work, but as told to American Songwriter, the project brings Luke Doucet both back to his formative years in Winnipeg: “‘Nadine’ is a song I played with my father when I was a teenager still trying to understand the basics of rock and roll. This track is the most paradoxical of all the reinterpretations on this record – the drum machine sounds pretty foreign against the lyric and the blues chords. In our minds, these disparate elements go together really well. We hear them in music all around us, if not delivered in songs written in the 50s…Ironically, there’s not much Chuck in the guitars. I leaned on Hendrix to bridge the gaps, as many have done before me. The two vocals, delivering a PJ Harvey-inspired take on the melody, makes the story darker than Chuck’s original lyric intended.”

Whitehorse’s version of “Nadine” is shadowy and ominous, the result of the duo’s orbit around more sinister matter. “Poor Nadine can’t seem to lose this guy. We wonder if maybe there’s a bit of a dark side to this story, so we aim to bring that out in the music,” McClelland notes to American Songwriter.

The release of The Northern South Vol. 1 comes hot on the heels of a big weekend at the Junos in Calgary, where they won Adult Alternative Album of the Year for Leave No Bridge Unburned and put in a thermogenic performance of “Tame as the Wild Ones” on the televised broadcast.

The Northern South Vol. 1 is now available for pre-order on iTunes & Google Play. You can stream Pretty Thing & My Babe on Spotify today.
